I think it's a valid and interesting question.

Tell you what I've only played one and a half times:

That Nirvana box with the nice metal shiny front. Lovely package, nice DVD, but hey.

Btw, I find that box sets like this one, that I'd otherwise never listen to completely start-to-finish more than once every 10 years, are tailor-made for "shuffle" mode -- I quite enjoy the occasional track!

more than ever convinced ilxor is a sock (ilxor), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 15:02 (thirteen years ago) link

the box set has some good stuff--my favourite is the cover of "Here She Comes Now"...

Geir has made it pretty clear in the past that live music doesn't matter to him at all, only perfected studio recordings.

not Morbius old, but still (Phil D.), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 15:09 (thirteen years ago) link

"Verse Chorus Verse" would make my POX.

One of their best. I really like "Marigold", the Dave Grohl song too.

his criticism doesn't even make sense about Unplugged in that while they were oft re-recorded old Nirvana tunes there was a GAZILLION covers of material that they hadn't covered on wax prior to that night. I mean ffs!

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 15:11 (thirteen years ago) link

also Unplugged was awesome

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 15:11 (thirteen years ago) link

who gives a shit? Geir excluded Incesticide and the two live albums and included the two 60s Nirvana albums: he has a bit of the idiot in him.

scaruffi kaleidoscope (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 15:13 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm aware of geir's general feelings about live recordings. i asked the question because he broadens the exclusion here (and elsewhere) to "new versions of pre-existing material." which raises the question: does performance matter at all? does a great vocal performance matter? does great playing matter? or is the first recording, preferably by the composer, automatically better than all other recordings. period? i'm not looking for a titanic-channeling, ilx-sinking, world-ending thread. just a simple answer. really!

I think he just reads the sheet music.

I had the 7" version, back in the day. A very silly Melvins' cover of "Venus in Furs" on the other side.

Mark G, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 15:22 (thirteen years ago) link

I had a chance to buy some sort of weird Nirvana vinyl (7 or 10" ???) once, with the VU cover and the song Opinion and some other song on it, I can't remember which. Didn't have quite enough to do it, and am now haunted by it.

Never found it in any Nirvana discography; does anybody have any idea what the other song was? Was it super-rare or anything? Wd appreciate the feedback!!!1!!

It's a bootleg, around $30 on popsike (record of recent ebay sales)

yeah that's the one. thanks!!!

Bleach is kinda becoming my favorite in my old age

it's the only album of theirs I genuinely enjoy listening to. the rest is like listening to Kurt loading shotgun shells

Bad Vibes Bob (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 16:18 (thirteen years ago) link

bleach = in utero > incesticide > nevermind > unplugged for me

i admit my placement of nevermind might have something to do with being absolutely inundated by it for the entirety of hs. anyway, don't sleep on incesticide imo

hypnosis is the reason some Jewish people backed him → (will), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 16:25 (thirteen years ago) link

My order:

incesticide > with the lights out > in utero > bleach > nevermind > unplugged

I think Nirvana's non-album tracks are pretty remarkable, unexpectedly ass-kicking and often very strange.

Lazarus Niles-Burnham (res), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 16:33 (thirteen years ago) link

it's so stupid that there's like official Nirvana b-sides that still have never seen a proper CD release. This band's catalog is totally fucking bungled

Yes, but think of the future marketing opportunities.

I love cinema. My favorite movies are Citizen Kane and the Boondock Saints (KMS), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 16:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Is "Talk to Me" a cover? It sounds very familiar (in the same way that all nirvana songs sound familiar, even upon hearing it the first time) but otherwise doesn't sound at all like a nirvana song.

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 16:49 (thirteen years ago) link

xp I tend to despise most Courtney Love trash-talk, but I think that this (handling Kurt's recorded output) is the one area where a legitimate claim could be made that she is a scourge on this earth.

scaruffi kaleidoscope (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 16:51 (thirteen years ago) link

I'd condense that to, "I tend to despise Courtney Love; she is a scourge on this earth."

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 17:01 (thirteen years ago) link

is that rarities box set no good? i've never heard it.

tylerw, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 17:01 (thirteen years ago) link

the box set is great! lot of curiosities that are actually worth listening to repeatedly. check out this one, for example:

also check this out for being possibly the weirdest song in the Nirvana catalog-- but impossibly catchy too

the video of them in a rumpus room practicing with some dude simulating a strobe light by flicking the light switch on and off is pretty charming.

I think "Dive" is still one of my favorite "non-regular studio album" track, followed closely by "I Hate Myself and Want to Die".

Great tracks. One of my favorite non-album tracks is the split single they did with the Jesus Lizard, "Oh the Guilt."

you gotta admit, no one can scream like that these days

Lazarus Niles-Burnham (res), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 17:43 (thirteen years ago) link

on Bleach Kurt screamed until his voice gave out. I remember my first few listens were painful for the whole "geezus that must hurt like hell" angle.

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 17:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Dive, Oh the Guilt, and I Hate Myself are all excellent songs...Been a Son is totally my favorite 'non-regular studio album' track, but there were a lot of great ones...

Even in His Youth is pretty good too; not quite as good as Oh the Guilt or I Hate Myself or Verse Chorus Verse, but I still like it lots...

re: sliver/manual strobe light

i think it's this one:

it looks straight out of Freaks & Geeks but with more mustaches.
