I laughed at the time, but he's faintly ridiculous. The markets mean way less than the weather, especially w/out any kind of context about why the Dow went down or the pound went up that day.

yeah exactly...if anything drastic has occured in the markets, it will be covered in the news, if not then it's a virtually inconsequential metric to all but ppl working for pension funds or w/e (who would already know it)

tho it fits w/ paxman's shtick, the appearance of temporal seriousness, the world of great measures that he considers himself to reflect upon and by proxy inhabit, whereas the weather forecast reminds him of his provenance on regional news

was it like that last week? this was the first episode I've seen this series. he looks like Russell Harty

didn't see but he was similarly great a couple months ago. relaxed, funny, hard to impress. very little wasted energy.

I'm too feeble atm to enumerate the ways in which he's terrible but as a documentarian he's insufferable.

he cried on "who do you think you are" which was quite sweet: re the (genuine) dismal suffering of an ancestor
