paxman's 'irreverent' refusal to deign to doing his stupid fucking job

I laughed at the time, but he's faintly ridiculous. The markets mean way less than the weather, especially w/out any kind of context about why the Dow went down or the pound went up that day.

― xyzzzz__, Monday, 11 October 2010 21:37 (4 minutes ago)

yeah exactly...if anything drastic has occured in the markets, it will be covered in the news, if not then it's a virtually inconsequential metric to all but ppl working for pension funds or w/e (who would already know it)

tho it fits w/ paxman's shtick, the appearance of temporal seriousness, the world of great measures that he considers himself to reflect upon and by proxy inhabit, whereas the weather forecast reminds him of his provenance on regional news

(Townshend is being interviewed by Paxman, in case anyone is wondering about the relevance to this thread)

(there's a tiny bit at the beginning where Paxo just about manages to corner PT re: hotel trashing, but Townshend is far too good an interviewee, although the footage is chopped up for 'The Kids Are Alright' docu)

It's April, what do you expect?

April is pretty unpredictable Paxo, it's hardly December or August or something.

was it like that last week? this was the first episode I've seen this series. he looks like Russell Harty

soref, Monday, 25 July 2016 22:42 (seven years ago) link

didn't see but he was similarly great a couple months ago. relaxed, funny, hard to impress. very little wasted energy.

Just turned off Paxman's Victorians documentary because he's unbearable.

nakh was always already correct on this thread: paxman bad not good and ditto everyone stanning for him (i don't make the rules)

mark s, Saturday, 22 September 2018 19:03 (five years ago) link

I'm too feeble atm to enumerate the ways in which he's terrible but as a documentarian he's insufferable.

he cried on "who do you think you are" which was quite sweet: re the (genuine) dismal suffering of an ancestor

this is the only leeway i will allow tho

Victoria Derbyshire anchoring, a TUC economist in the studio, the first 20 minutes and counting dedicated to the cost of living crisis. Newsnight is good again?

one year passes...

it's like hearing that a pub has closed down which I used to go to a lot when I was in my twenties but which had an awful makeover, went gastro, couple of bad landlords didn't help and to be honest I'd been wondering why it opened up after the pandemic. https://t.co/YQe4zutRgl
