i found the mp3!
if anyone wants it i put it online

it's amazing! it's like the early 90s compressed into one track - pump up the jam vs nkotb + apache tossed in at various key points (eg. under the 'step 1 - we can have lots of fun' breakdown!)

jess their best songs are step by step (original mix), the right stuff, tonight and cover girl. hangin tough is ok tho!

minna (minna), Monday, 7 July 2003 07:19 (twenty years ago) link

oops that first link won't work, try here instead

minna (minna), Monday, 7 July 2003 07:23 (twenty years ago) link

cmon everybody do the new kids dance!

minna (minna), Monday, 7 July 2003 07:25 (twenty years ago) link

My mom gave me a copy of "Hangin' Tough" for Christmas and I gave it to my sister THAT DAY, which totally pissed off my elders (evidently my mom had seen me write to a pen pal/NKOTB nut that they were "ok," and mistook that kindness for sincere fanship). That same Christmas I got the B-52's "Cosmic Thing" which remains one of my favorite albums of all time.

Anyhow, some of the NKOTB singles are pleasant, but nowhere as good as the New Edition numbers they ape ("Is This The End?" beats "Please Don't Go Girl" and so on). The Step By Step songs are more interesting in their mix of ambitiousness and chintz. "Tonight" has nostalgiac lyrics and a Beatles trumpet, while Step By Step has swirling strings and "Games" is all rap-happy in much less lame way then "Hangin' Tough." Their video comps are the bomb. Stick with those if you're looking for entertainment from these guys.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 July 2003 20:40 (twenty years ago) link

"Tonight" is god-awful, you guys! The only worthwhile New Kids song is "The Right Stuff".

Have I told the story of how my wife accidentally dissed the New Kids to their faces?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 July 2003 20:45 (twenty years ago) link

"Tonight" is awful in the best way a song can be awful, Dan. More shitty bands should write songs about their previous hits. I wanna hear Creed sing about how One took us Higher and showed us What This Life's For and how the audience freed Scott Stapp from his Own Prison so he could make his Sacrifice With Arms Wide Open.

Please tell the anecdote!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 July 2003 20:51 (twenty years ago) link

"Tonight" is fantastic

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 July 2003 20:56 (twenty years ago) link

Dan do you hate "Glass Onion"?

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 July 2003 20:56 (twenty years ago) link

What is "Glass Onion" (and can we eat it)?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 July 2003 20:58 (twenty years ago) link

They had a cartoon, didn't they?

Cozen (Cozen), Monday, 7 July 2003 20:59 (twenty years ago) link

All I remember about the cartoon is that in the opening credits they used hoverboards to escape fans and one episode was titled "Danny Gets Dissed" and it was the first time I ever heard the word dissed.

nine months pass...
I was totally like in love with the NKOTB then all of a sudden they were gone. I guess the pressure to keep up with the times or the fact that people like new things. To feel they are still "with it" really hurt the grop. Although the lead singer Joey has finnaly moved on and became solo like many other members of boy bands do. Like Justin Timberlake and Nick Lachey for example. I really miss the NKONB.

Tabitha Garland, Sunday, 2 May 2004 03:08 (nineteen years ago) link

So, Dan, when did your wife insult NKOTB?

My sister loved this band when I was 5.

OH-OH, OH-OH-OH, OH-OH, OH-OH, OH-OH, OH-OH-OH, THE RIGHT STUFF!

They reigned supreme over the girls in my third grade class.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 2 May 2004 06:20 (nineteen years ago) link

First month I arrived at college, me and a bunch of girls in my dorm wrote a fake letter to their fan club, that started out innocently and got more obscene as the letter progressed. We wrote it in magic marker, signed it with names like "Bambi" and "Candy", and sent it off.

A few months later, we got a reply: a routine b*w glossy of the Fab 5 smiling, signed "Thanks (hee hee) for your support!! Love, NKOTB."

The New Kids were horrible musically, but necessary--they provided so much ammo for comedians and anybody else who wanted to make fun of something.

We got a copy of their first ever album in at work, when they were all really really young, and I died laughing.

uh, Sunday, 2 May 2004 17:20 (nineteen years ago) link

and the redeemable feature of the "Hangin' Tough" video is that Donnie is wearing a shirt that says HOMEBOY on it. Thank you.

New Kids trivia:

Q: Which New Kid's voice changed in the middle of a concert?!?!

A: Joey!!

At least, that's what my sister always told me, when she was a superfan and I was the little brother.

Zachary Scott (Zach S), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 01:09 (seventeen years ago) link

The only NKOTB track that wasn't a total dud was "Tonight", which is actually a great "Sgt. Pepper" era Beatles pastiche.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 01:46 (seventeen years ago) link

I remember the issue of Mad magazine that skewered New Kids in a bunch of articles. Mainly some line about how selling 10 million records is less a sign of their popularity, and more a sign of 10 million idiots with $15 less in their pockets.

Also, there was a fold-in which asked What Group Is More Popular Than The Beatles? and it folded into a spotlight on an empty stage and read "No One."

FACE!

I was just listening to "Didn't I Blow Your Mind (This Time)" and the only thing that blew my mind is how crappy the production is! The intro sounds like fucking Nintendo music, or a MIDI or some shit.

It's a good song, though. It's been a real karaoke classic for me more than once!

Bulgakov never supported the regime, and mocked it in many of his works. Therefore, most of them were consigned to his desk drawer for several decades. In 1930 he wrote a letter to Stalin requesting permission to emigrate if the Soviet Union could not find use for him as a satirist and received a personal phone call from Stalin himself, denying him that. Stalin had enjoyed Bulgakov's work, The Days of the Turbins and found work for him at a small Moscow theatre, and then the Moscow Art Theatre. In his autobiography and in many biographies, it is stated that Bulgakov wrote the letter out of desperation and mental anguish, never actually intending to post it. The refusal of the authorities to let him work in the theatre and his desire to see his family living abroad, whom he had not seen for many years, led him to seek drastic measures. Despite his new work, the projects he worked on at the theatre were unsuccessful and he was stressed and unhappy. He also worked briefly at the Bolshoi Theatre as a librettist, but left after his works were not produced.

Bulgakov died from an inherited kidney disorder in 1940 and was buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow.

i used to loathe this group but i heard "please don't go girl" again recently and thought it was sweet. in the video you can see that little joey is putting over his vocal 100% earnestly like he's really got it bad for the chick it's about, and the older new kids are all "haha can you believe we get paid to sing this garbage, when does shooting wrap so we can go back to the hotel and 'meet our fans'?"

While promoting her upcoming SyFy movie "Mega Python vs. Gatoroid"

I watched 10 minutes of this over the weekend, horrible even by SyFy original movie standards. Had no idea until just now that it was Tiffany and Debbie Gibson in the scratching cat fight. Gibson looks AWFUL now, like a thinner, more coked out version of Katie Morgan.

The story isn't actually that exciting!

During my wife's freshman year, she dated a dude who went to HS with NKOTB and tried to flex his VIP cred by taking her out to a nightclub where they were hanging out and introducing her to them. Unfortunately this was pre-The Right Stuff and she had no idea who they were, so when dude was all "they're SINGERS" she said "so? I am too" and proceed to talk about placing third at the Mid-South Fair and being courted by Juilliard.

i'm surprised i never posted on this thread. my sister was a huge NKOTB fan. she had their posters up all over her walls, and of course her favorite was Joey, because Joey was younger than the rest of the kids on that block, which meant that he was only 8 years old than my sister, who was 8 in 1988. i was 5. a legendary new kids moment happened during a concert when Joey's voice changed in the middle of the concert. how adorable!!

like completely miles away from the other guys. he doesn't even sing the "all that I needed was you" because his voice cracks.
