>The Rammstein shoulda been far higher up.

OTM. Epic, at least as good as anything they've ever done, and with harmonica on top!

Thirded on the Rammstein. "Amerika" was rock single of the year, easily.

I liked the Rammstein album (and "Amerika is wunderbar, coca cola und der wonderbra") a lot, like I always do with them (hey, I have an actual gold record of *Sehnsucht on my office wall, which they sent me after my stellar review in *Rolling Stone), but I don't really understand how the new album sounds any different than all their other ones. I put *Sehnsucht and "Du Hast" in my top ten the year they came out, and doing it again would seem vaguely redundant (same way I feel about the Donnas, of all people, though at least with the Donnas I can detect a certain progression of musicianship over the years. Their new one might be their best ever, but it's also pretty much just another Donnas album. Which is fine; hey, AC/DC got away with it, at least while Bon was alive. But AC/DC were way better.)

Actually, the Isis album was just another Isis album to me, too. Ditto the Neurosis album for that matter (though I do like both). But at least I can see how those guys are slooooooooowwwwwwly avancing more and more toward Muzak in their old age.

There's something about the production of 'Reise Reise' that just takes what was already over the top a quantum leap further:

RAMMSTEIN: NOW - IN CINEMASCOPE ! ! !

Boom. Orchestrations. Backing singers. More, and more outrageous black humour. More EVERYTHING. The 'Amerika' video showing them particpating in the filming of a fake Apollo moon landing is particularly fine.

Saw 'em live in '02, and really wish they were playing near me this time around. Incredible.

The FLs are about to get even better...according to their site, Mick Barr (of Orthrelm) has joined the band on second guitar.

Yep, Mick moved to SF a month ago.

I haven't even heard of Head Automatica , My Chemical Romance or The Bronx.
Who are they?

Rock Bastard, Thursday, 23 December 2004 00:07 (nineteen years ago) link

no Circle Takes the Square?

Head Automatica is the guy from Glassjaw and Dan the Automator.

pinder (pinder), Thursday, 23 December 2004 01:32 (nineteen years ago) link

why do people like my chemical romance?

My girlfriend likes them. No, I don't quite get the point here either...

Maybe Converge will win terrorizers album of year again. Does Kerrang even give features to the likes of Converge,Isis and Old Man Gloom?

- No Lamb of God is shocking.
- The Isis record doesnt deserve a place on there.
- Mastadon at number 1 is OTM.

Actually, Isis is one of the only listenable records on there.

chuck, Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:47 (nineteen years ago) link

"listenable"

idiot.

ddb (ddb), Thursday, 23 December 2004 18:00 (nineteen years ago) link

The isis album is superb.

Rock Bastard, Thursday, 23 December 2004 18:26 (nineteen years ago) link

uh, yeah, listenable. (in isis's case, as background music to read books or water your plants or fall asleep to, but still...) it also would have helped if they would've labeled the list "20 mostly run-of-the-mill loud guitar albums beloved by junior high school children across the land," but i guess that's too much to ask for these days.

a few hundred or so others they could've considered are mentioned here: Rolling 2004 Metal Thread

chuck, Thursday, 23 December 2004 18:27 (nineteen years ago) link

it's mediocre emo pap at best...but to each his/her own.

ddb (ddb), Thursday, 23 December 2004 18:28 (nineteen years ago) link

Eddy is on the mark, particularly about that Isis album. It's BACKGROUND music. Who wants metal background music? That Kerrang list is an absolute joke.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Thursday, 23 December 2004 19:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Actually, after listening again, I'd say that Isis really isn't a good soundtrack for watering plants or reading books. But maybe for running the vacuum cleaner ...

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Thursday, 23 December 2004 19:45 (nineteen years ago) link

WHY NO PSYOPUS?...THAT RECORD KILLED 2004.

What are people takes on the Mastadon record? Aside from it FUCKING ruling.

ddb (ddb), Thursday, 23 December 2004 20:26 (nineteen years ago) link

the circle takes the square record is the record the blood brothers wish they made.
