She's pretty, but this song makes me want to cut my ears off.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 23 July 2005 10:42 (eighteen years ago) link

The "I love you, I love you, I love you" bit makes me think of the (brilliant) ending of one of my favourite novels. Which is probably a bad thing overall, because apart from that the song is annoyingly bad-but-catchy.

this is such an awesome song.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Saturday, 23 July 2005 13:47 (eighteen years ago) link

It's like Pink meets Robbie Williams. I don't need that.

What's the song about brusing easily with her dressed up as a geisha in the video clip? I heard/saw it once and really liked it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 23 July 2005 14:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Doesn't speak to me at all and the moment where she says "Read some Byron, Shelley and Keats/recited over a HIP/HOP/BEAT" makes me wanna kill.

TS: Byron, Shelley and Keats recited over a hip-hop beat vs. Che Guevara and DeBussy to a disco beat

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 23 July 2005 14:41 (eighteen years ago) link

vs. Dipset and Mike Jones over gamelan.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 23 July 2005 14:56 (eighteen years ago) link

It's like Pink meets Robbie Williams. I don't need that.

But some of us do. Lyrics are cheesy, but swoopiness of chorus mixed with surprisingly loud beat makes it so good.

Heh. Now if Tennant-Lowe had composed Natasha a Liza-Dusty-Patsy worthy song...

I saw the video this morning. UK GO HOME.

Then there's the fact she pronounces hyperbole as hyperbowl. Blargh. Nelly Furtado was annoying the first time round.

Deluxe (Damian), Monday, 25 July 2005 22:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Apparently she recorded a new video for the US market. The original featured her doing some scratching with cucumber slices. Possibly not a reference to DJ Cucumber Slice.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 25 July 2005 22:34 (eighteen years ago) link

i just heard this song on the radio. i thought it sounded like pink or nelly furtado, but it was catchy as fuck.

i must hear this again.

reo, Thursday, 4 August 2005 05:56 (eighteen years ago) link

Am I the only person with a wicked hatred of songs that mention writing the song? This extends to songs about performing as well, or generally songs about musicians in general. Derail.

soultr0n, Thursday, 4 August 2005 06:45 (eighteen years ago) link

This is hitting huge in the U.S. now. Rapidly ascending the Top 40, and newly added to NYC's current-pop-hits station. I can't get behind its clunky production, though the Nelly Furtado comparison is spot on.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 4 August 2005 15:06 (eighteen years ago) link

P.S. The "I love you I love you I love you" thing reminds me of Stevie Wonder's "Knocks Me Off My Feet," only less effectively so.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 4 August 2005 15:11 (eighteen years ago) link

It was co-opted in the UK for a furniture company called "DFS", which I'm sure you can fairly easily imagine how those three letters fit into the song.

It made me wish that a) there was an 'S' chord and b) the chords to that part of the song were actually D-F-S.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 4 August 2005 15:17 (eighteen years ago) link

This is brilliant. It perfectly captures the stress, the self-doubt, .. pretty much every facet of the labour of love that is songwriting. And she's got a great voice. Best pop single I've heard in eons.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 7 August 2005 02:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Okay I may have over-reacted a tad, but it's a great tune.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 7 August 2005 03:05 (eighteen years ago) link

I heard it today at my daughter's kiddie gym, and remembered I heard it months ago and loved it then. And I still love it. Very sweet song, and perhaps brilliant. So what's the deal? Was this an '04 song, or is it '05? Why is it suddenly getting played in America? Is it on some soundtrack?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 03:17 (eighteen years ago) link

The video is starting to gets lots of US airplay. On VH1 and other channels as well.

steve-k, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 03:32 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't have cable. But it made me stop what I was doing and listen (at least until my daughter screeched like a dinosaur and demanded to be held upright so she could "walk" around the play gym some more).

I find something hypnotic and touching about the song. It's the polar opposite of "Are You That Somebody?" but something about it has grabbed onto me the same way.

Maybe tomorrow, I will hate it. But today, it's lovely.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 03:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Why is it suddenly getting played in America? Is it on some soundtrack?

At a rough stab in the dark, I'm guessing the label didn't want to send it over to the states whilst Tash Bedders didn't have the time to promote it properly. She's on the traditional Busted/Robbie Williams/Lostprophets "time off to break America" excursion over here anyway.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 09:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I liked this one when it was on the radio!!!! The lyrics about how hard it is to write lyrics!!!! And because it's hard, the lyrics are clunky and any old crap is chucked in to fill up the verses!!!!! And they admit it!!!!! And it doesn't matter, because that's the way it supposed to be anyway!!!!! And therefore it's both a brilliant description and illustration of the subject matter!!!!!

Oh, and the tune's quite catchy as well.

Am I the only one who hasn't admitted til now that he really, really, likes "Unwritten"?

The Reverend, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 22:17 (seventeen years ago) link

I might have missed this being mentioned above , but one of the songwriters for "These Words" (and the main guy behind Bedingfield) is Steve Kipner (also partly responsible for "Physical", "Genie In A Bottle") who's one of my heroes from the 60's and 70's (back when he was doing fake Bee Gees stuff). Not surprising that his new protege would be somewhat interesting...

This is so funny. I was planning to start a thread with a title like this, but about this song, which I seem to hear every time I'm in a convenience store or sandwich shop.

I only know Pocketful of Sunshine because I played those Dance Dance Revolution games and Natasha Bedingfield mustve had some contract with them because every edition of the game had some shitty NBeds song on it

I only know it from Easy A. It's classic for that.
