three weeks pass...
I was totally going to start a "Hot Chip suck" thread but it turns out nobody really cares about them. I like the Beta Band and Junior Boys, so you think this would work but it doesn't. It fucking sucks. Boring.

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 15 January 2006 20:29 (eighteen years ago) link

Into my slsk queue it goes

disco violence (disco violence), Monday, 16 January 2006 00:22 (eighteen years ago) link

totally agreed Zwan. I don't get it either. Piffle. Drivel. Slop. putrid excrement smeared on fried bread.

GALKIN (GALKIN), Monday, 16 January 2006 01:34 (eighteen years ago) link

i like it quite a lot

nervous (cochere), Monday, 16 January 2006 01:36 (eighteen years ago) link

this record is terrible. do we really need a breathy, "sincere" ween?

cancer prone fat guy (dubplatestyle), Monday, 16 January 2006 02:36 (eighteen years ago) link

millions of post-grads etc.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 16 January 2006 02:49 (eighteen years ago) link

"etc." = can't be wrong?

disco violence (disco violence), Monday, 16 January 2006 04:29 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh man. Wait. Does it get worse after the first two tracks? 'Cause if that's the case, for possibly the first time ever, ILM's hatred isn't being hyperbolic enough.

disco violence (disco violence), Monday, 16 January 2006 04:31 (eighteen years ago) link

i'm not wild about Coming on Strong, but "Over and Over" is the fucking shit and i bet the DFA produced album is great. their latest live shows were supposedly great

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Monday, 16 January 2006 05:47 (eighteen years ago) link

This album is soooo bad... perhaps worse than The Eagles Of Death Metal.

Dom iNut (donut), Monday, 16 January 2006 06:34 (eighteen years ago) link

the live show (back during cmj) was AWFUL, i left after 3 songs. a whole bunch of messy crap soul whining/cowbell banging singer wearing sunglasses/unattractive man wanking on some kind of microkorg-nord lead atrocity.

i can't think back to this experience without cringing.

bell labs (bell_labs), Monday, 16 January 2006 18:29 (eighteen years ago) link

I thought they weren't bad live. It's when I checked out the album that i was unimpressed.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 16 January 2006 19:18 (eighteen years ago) link

the only track of theirs that I really like is "just like we (breakdown)" .... probably because it's sincere in its sappiness ... the joke factor of their other stuff turns me off.

Renard (Renard), Monday, 16 January 2006 19:54 (eighteen years ago) link

Don't be mean to Hot Chip, you guys!

nancyboy (nancyboy), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 11:07 (eighteen years ago) link

haha uh I like this a lot

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 11:15 (eighteen years ago) link

"etc." = can't be wrong?

no, have a need for a breathy, "sincere" Ween. I have not yet tried the CD myself.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 11:18 (eighteen years ago) link

I quite like Hot Chip. Over and Over was one of my favourite songs of the latter part of 2005.

klee (klee), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 12:27 (eighteen years ago) link

what record are you all on about?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 12:48 (eighteen years ago) link

hot chip, "coming on strong"

do you like it?

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 12:57 (eighteen years ago) link

i've not heard it - has it been reissued? they were fkn great when i saw them live.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 13:17 (eighteen years ago) link

DFA / Astralwerks just put it out in the U.S.

there's also the Over and Over / Just Like We single, which I guess is a preview of their second record

Renard (Renard), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:14 (eighteen years ago) link

I have a Hot Chip cdr release from over 3 years ago. Can I sell it for hundreds of pounds?

adamrl (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:24 (eighteen years ago) link

It's sad that Hot Chip gets full distribution, but Clor still can't get a U.S. deal with any label...(although maybe they've turned down offers from smaller U.S. labels as far as I know..)

Dom iNut (donut), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:26 (eighteen years ago) link

it's all about the DFA remix of "Just Like We (Breakdown)" which no doubt should get x-posted to that sad techno thread.

imbidimts, Tuesday, 17 January 2006 19:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Classic for getting the NME to embarrass themselves even more than usual by coining the term "slapcore."

"The Warning" has leaked </Orson>

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 05:30 (eighteen years ago) link

i was surprised at some of the hatred for this group, but i haven't heard any of the older material. i figured this would be something the ILMassive would love. "Just like We (Breakdown)" & "No Fit State" are really standing out so far.

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 05:32 (eighteen years ago) link

as i said before, "no fit state" is huge

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 05:58 (eighteen years ago) link

where did it leak to? it's not on oink
and i'm excited

nervous (cochere), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 06:01 (eighteen years ago) link

i figured cutty would like it.

is this gonna be on DFA?

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 06:03 (eighteen years ago) link

meaning, aren't there some people that work for DFA on this board. i'm guilty of stealing, but i'd rather not be guilty of spreading

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 06:04 (eighteen years ago) link

you can download the new album on slsk...been listening to it all day. i'm really digging Boy From School and Colours, though the whole album is pretty consistently good.

echodex (echodex), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 06:48 (eighteen years ago) link

i'm really surprised that the original of "Just like We (Breakdown)" is more interesting than the DFA remix. looses all the rhythmic complexity.

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 06:51 (eighteen years ago) link

The video for Over And Over makes me really not like them, though. the song definitely treads into the Beta Band/Ween territory. is this what all british people are like?

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 07:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Great new album. Miles above Coming on Strong and I liked that one.

wmlynch (wlynch), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 07:42 (eighteen years ago) link

the new remix 12 is brilliant, naum gabo and justus really doing great.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 23:52 (eighteen years ago) link

I like the video of 'Over And Over', and the song itself is much better than the whole career of the Junior Boys.

zeus (zeus), Monday, 6 March 2006 10:38 (eighteen years ago) link

... though the first Hot Chip album was more dud, than classic.

zeus (zeus), Monday, 6 March 2006 10:39 (eighteen years ago) link

saw em this weekend at a live instore. was really impressed. they had all indie-nerd steretypes covered. Terry from Just One of the Guys, Alan Cumming, Napoleon Dynamite (i couldn't see the two other guys).

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:17 (eighteen years ago) link

The guy on the right looks like Vinnie Jones!

T/S: Pinks/Oki Dog/Scoobys/Tail o' the Pup (Bent Over at the Arclight), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:31 (eighteen years ago) link

jaxon referencing terry from just one of the guys just made my day.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:42 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm starting to think that the only Hot Chip tracks that really do it for me are No Fit State, The DFA's remix of Just Like We (Break Down), and Over and Over. It seems like the more I listen to other tracks from The Warning and Coming On Strong the less I like them. I really enjoyed those tracks live, but at home they put me to sleep more or less. So aside from the big 3 mentioned above, I'm apathetic...but maybe time will tell.

Chantilly Bass (ChantillyBass), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:41 (eighteen years ago) link

it's a classic conundrum - great live band, dud on record.

hearts, Thursday, 9 March 2006 00:01 (eighteen years ago) link

chantilly, i know what you mean. while i was all gushing about their new 'un on the other thread, my enthusiasm for the record has steadily dwindled and now i often concede, letting my eager skip finger goes blang blauh several times.

its still way way fun and i can still feel it with my hands and my tongue but something seems a bit temporary about it all. (god, jaded about an album not even released for another 2 months - someone cut me up soon.)

Back to being classic based on first listen, lush second summer of love vibe to it.

There’s a rather clever narrative video too, but doesn’t foreground the track, though will be the one to get attention.*

Dan Worsley, Friday, 5 April 2019 07:43 (five years ago) link

That's a great video, as good as "I Feel Better."

I should relisten to "Why Make Sense," I don't remember a thing about it, though Joe Goddard's last album was great.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 5 April 2019 11:43 (five years ago) link

I saw Hot Chip at Glastonbury after Why Make Sense came out. IIRC they didn't play a single song from it.

Matt DC, Friday, 5 April 2019 11:47 (five years ago) link

I could have sworn the last couple of times through town here they only played festivals, so maybe they have a sequenced "hits" set?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 5 April 2019 11:57 (five years ago) link

WMS' title track is one of their best songs imho

My exceptions were weirdly low for the new album considering they were one of my favourite bands going during the One Life Stand/In Our Heads eras, but I'm really enjoying it. The second half in particular is so strong.

kitchen person, Saturday, 22 June 2019 04:50 (four years ago) link

Is it just me or do the first two songs have pretty much the same vocal melody in the chorus?

Matt DC, Saturday, 22 June 2019 08:39 (four years ago) link

1) Thank you for reminding me that this is now out.
2) I had no idea that Philippe Zdar worked on it, RIP.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 22 June 2019 12:46 (four years ago) link

okay, at least on this day I love this album so much I played it a second time right after I played it the first time.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 22 June 2019 15:37 (four years ago) link

its hard to think of a band that more desperately needs to release a live album

ufo, Saturday, 22 June 2019 15:55 (four years ago) link

or, for that matter, a band whose recorded output gives no real indication of how great they are as a live act.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 22 June 2019 16:17 (four years ago) link

they did a live album nine years ago:

http://bpm-sfx.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/livealexandrapalace1011-840x560.jpg

(and an itunes-only live EP in 2008)

agree that they should have two live albums a year though

quelle sprocket damage (sic), Saturday, 22 June 2019 19:24 (four years ago) link

okay, at least on this day I love this album so much I played it a second time right after I played it the first time.

― Josh in Chicago

Yeah, I've played this album three times today and it's such a delight. Those last four songs are really doing it for me, especially Why Does My Mind.

kitchen person, Sunday, 23 June 2019 01:27 (four years ago) link

I see they’ve also joined ranks with lcd in having godawful album art.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Sunday, 23 June 2019 13:49 (four years ago) link

I don't think they've ever had really great artwork, but yes this is a particular low point for them.

kitchen person, Sunday, 23 June 2019 14:53 (four years ago) link

Coming On Strong and The Warning are fine, they have a good ~brand identity~ that fits the band's semi-tentative sound at the time. The no-copy-the-same-colour gag on the last one was fun, or would have been in record shops (the bonus EP only came if you bought direct from EMI in Australia). The new one is atrocious.

quelle sprocket damage (sic), Sunday, 23 June 2019 21:04 (four years ago) link

Surprising how poor a lot of their artwork is when you look at their videos. They clearly have a visual sense but is best realised in a performative medium.

Dan Worsley, Sunday, 23 June 2019 21:22 (four years ago) link

watching a live session rn and the front half of the band are wearing suits made out of the album art, Split Enz-style

Alexis' hair is even dyed to match it

quelle sprocket damage (sic), Monday, 24 June 2019 20:30 (four years ago) link

I find this album kind of boring, tbqh

jaymc, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 03:29 (four years ago) link

The Joe Goddard/Amy Douglas side project Hard Feelings' album is smart, sassy dance pop. Recommended for anyone missing Jessie Ware or Roisin Murphy.

New one is really great, especially the title track. Seems like a lot of people have fallen off with these guys, but I think they're still putting out some really great records.

I need to spend more time with the new one. It feels like they peaked with One Life Stand and In Our Heads, but those last two albums were really good. They're still yet to put out a bad album.

first posted this on the Cup Copy thread by mistake

I played the new album Feaksout/Release over the weekend and it was decent. Not really a fan of the lead single but liked the album. First time have checked out something new by them and will revisit at some point this year.
