It was his abortive body popping phase (no, it doesn't look like body popping. It was abortive)

he's channeling his inner penis.

You guys think it's funny, but now I REALLY NEED TO KNOW what the hell is happening on this album cover!!

Yeah, if anyone ever figures it out, let me know.

from http://www.superseventies.com/spdiamondneil2.html

"Here on the very front cover is Neil in full flight, working it on out, and what is he doing? Pretending to jerk off, that's what. He's pantomiming whanging his clanger, and from the look on his face I'd say he's about to shoot off, and the only bogus part is that he'd like everybody to think it's 13 inches long. It's truly a pic to post in your den or rec room for years to come, no matter what some o' them psychedelic shmucks with their Hawkwind nightshade garlands might think; you don't even need a black light, and it's great to spill beer on or throw your girlfriend up against in the party's latter leagues. "

one year passes...
He is getting into the song Holly Holy. Anybody who has seen Neil perform should recognize this move of his. HAN was the first full concert album, including bantering with the audience, recorded. This recording was the bible of all live albums following it. Too bad Neil didn't stay Rock And Roll. Heartlight Sux and so do alot of the ballad stuff he did. If you really want to hear some good Neil Diamond buy his "Stages" boxed set. (but throw out the Christmas cd that's in it).TCO has a couple notable songs, "I Haven't Play This Song In Years" and "Midnight Dream". As he is finally writing all on his own again and is in the process of putting together another album, I'm hoping the more "rocking" Neil will emerge. I agree about Carol Bayer-Sayer. Worst thing he ever did was team up with her and her husband. No wait. Baucaud and Bacharach were his worst collaborations. That's what stuck him with the MOR image he has today. Heartlight was written with Bacharach, so my point is made. All that said, I love Neil Diamond and am proud of it. I own everything he put out on vinyl, including HAN. By the way, his hand on Hot August Night 2 is on his guitar, so get your minds out of the gutter, lol.

I love when he gives a shout to the people in the trees on the first HAN -- "I'm singing for you tonight, too."

Also love his entrance on "You Don't Bring Me Flowers." After Babs, he rolls in like Waits on a five-day bender.

My suggestion is still correct.

If you listen to the album with headphones, you can hear the tree people answering him back.
The tree people actually outnumbered the people inside the Greek audience, there were close to 50,000 of them filling the park surrounding the Greek. When Neil found out earlier in the day that the fire marshal and police were going to clear out the park because it was fire season, he refused to do the concert. He said no tree people, then no concert.
It took a special meeting of the city leaders to override the fire marshall and add more police patrols so the concert could go on. They were afraid that if Neil didn't do the concert the city would break out in riots. And the rest is history.

No lie. Wow, thanks, DiamondDazed. That's a new one on me.

fourteen years pass...

a: mirrored image of them both getting extremely hype while listening to the eternal jam "would i lie to you?"

I was thinking 'horrifying transporter accident which transpired while listening to the eternal jam 'Would I Lie to You?'' but your take is also acceptable.

when you listen to "would i lie to you?" it opens up a portal to a mirror universe where your exact double is also jamming the hell out of "would i lie to you?"

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 14 May 2019 19:16 (four years ago) link

i think that’s just a mirror tbh

I dunno, in my experience, mirrors only induce expressions that pained when I make the mistake of gazing into them.
