Yeah, sorry, talking out of my arse again.

The disco nouveau stuff comes out on ghostly. The Mat dear stuff which I've heard - ep1 and ep2 (and don't rate except for 1 or 2 tracks) comes out on spectral. But I'd certainly listen to an LP of his.

Aren't these sub-labels supposed to make things *less* confusing?

The one to go for first is probably "idol tryouts" - a comp.

Dabrye restored my faith in 'idm' (or at least a small portion of it). i think it's because he was mimicking one of my favorite hip hop producers, Jay Dee. it's pretty cool that the two have become friends (both from Detroit) and are currently working on projects together

soundmurderer does acid house revival tracks as "osborne" on spectral, and they're pretty hot. um, but that's only like three tracks on two eps. there's an isolee remix on one of those eps.

i was saying mean things about matthew dear on another thread and andy k gave me such a beatdown that i may go buy the album to see what he's so worked up about.

obviously, spectral (house) >>> ghostly (idm)

Clearly recorded on their recent tour. Matthew Dear was hugely dissapointing, especially considering he is also Jabberjaw, his Ghostly stuff is just plain dull.

the backstroke ep is really nice

The song "My Radio" by Solvent is gorgeous -- I think either Fluxblog or Said the Gramaphone put up a remix by Schneider TM that was just as/even more pretty. I highly recommed that song if you like warm electro stuff with vocals (and don't mind that the label is run by a young man whose father is wealthy and gave him money to put out music he likes, or whatever the idiots upthread were whining about).

oh, and "dog days" is one the new afuken fabric mix.

where oh where is the new dabrye?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 20 May 2004 16:15 (nineteen years ago) link

So, to be honest not sure if the Radio 1 mixes are live from recent Dear & Dabrye European dates or were done in the studio exclusively for the show. I think a little bit of both, actually.

My Radio remix can be found on this. Full-length Solvent is coming this fall.

New Dabrye single with Jay Dee is coming out in July and Two/Three should hopefully come out before the end of the year.... Most of the production is done but he's been getting MCs (some really interesting names) to lay down vocals. The "demo" CD with samples of the beats is unbelievable.

Rich kid gets financial backing from his international investment banker father and decides to put out luke warm/medocre electronic music with dad's money.
dud.

i know a lot of rich kids who've tried to start a label and failed miserably....i think sam deserves credit for doing it right.

oftentimes, a person with good ideas and know-how doesn't have the capital to do anything with their skills--and on the flip there are lot of trust fund kids that assume all they'd need is money to help pull things off.

sam was just one of those lucky people that had both.

nine years pass...

Deciding to do something different than my usual musical interests, gf and I saw the Ghostly International triple bill of Beacons, Shigeto, and Heathered Pearls Saturday night while up in NYC. Eh, some nice moments from all three and Shigeto worked hard jumping back in forth from his laptop to drums (where he was speedily punding), but I wasn't wowed. They're in D.C. tomorrow at U St Music hall.

love shigeto, going to see this bill in a few weeks but i haven't heard the other two.

Heathered Pearls is one guy doing atmospheric/semi-classical stuff (who live, *spoiler alert*, had two women sitting on the stage in front of his electronic gear painting plastic roses and then each other's faces Kabuki style plus crocheting!). Beacon is 2 guys programming sounds with one offering New Orderish vocals. Beacon had entertaining visuals behind them as did Shigeto. Audience loved Shigeto (esp. some young women upfront). I started out liking him and then found his rhythms predictable after awhile. There's a 4th act on the D.C. bill tomorrow whose name I forget.

They had that lineup plus a few others including Adult when I was in SF and it was so-so until the last bit.

Weird. Thought "Oh, a Ghostly International t-shirt would make a great present!" but couldn't find one in the UK. That said, I've thought the same about Craven Faults.
