Any band can be the best band in the world for an afternoon.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 17 January 2004 18:44 (twenty years ago) link

...especially if alcohol is involved.

rainman (rainman), Saturday, 17 January 2004 18:49 (twenty years ago) link

I think they might still be the best band in the world. I have a unbelievably colossal emotional investment in the next album and am anxious that it nudges them into glorious exciting twisty new shapes. I am relatively confident that it will be so.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Saturday, 17 January 2004 20:11 (twenty years ago) link

pretty bored of 'Light And Magic' now but the 'Softcore Jukebox' is a great great compilation. i wouldn't mind hearing their 'live soundtrack' to Tron still.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 18 January 2004 01:06 (twenty years ago) link

what¿

dyson (dyson), Sunday, 18 January 2004 01:59 (twenty years ago) link

I like Light and Magic a lot, it's been one of my most-listened-to albums from the past two years.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 18 January 2004 02:25 (twenty years ago) link

four years pass...

Had my first three listens to Velocifoofoo today. After a few weeks with the "Ghost" remixes. For a band for whom I've purchased their complete works (I think) I don't know much about them at all. Which I realized is an incredible complement to how much I enjoy their music. At their worst, the giddy cheap thrill I got from Republica. At their best, everything kind everyone said about Siouxsie and Gary Newman, only better. Sure, there's throwaway tracks, but the singles are lush and effortless.

bendy, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 01:28 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm surprised how little attention their new album is getting

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 07:24 (fifteen years ago) link

As always.

'Velocifero' is not their best on the first listen, but still very good. There are a few filler tracks in the middle unfortunately, but the last two songs are brilliant.

zeus, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 11:13 (fifteen years ago) link

It never reaches the brilliance of Witching Hour but it's defibitely a grower

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 11:53 (fifteen years ago) link

LADYTRON ARE THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD (AT THE MOMENT, YES, ABSOLUTELY)

asey, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:18 (fifteen years ago) link

was going to get this today - but didn't.

another fucking loss due to the revised love for nasty digipack crap.

mark e, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:33 (fifteen years ago) link

I think I'll get this on vinyl

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:38 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't think digipack would put me off this, although for other things it certainly has. Seems too many people use digipacks as a way to avoid putting effort into liner notes and so on... which is unfortunate...

do we have a digipacks C/D thread yet? if not, we should.

asey, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:42 (fifteen years ago) link

there was a great thread re the downfalls of crap packaging but i can never find the bugger.

mark e, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Ladytron are also the first band for whom I've purchased their whole catalog as digital downloads.

lulz

fwiw i don't think i've ever heard a ladytron song? and i'm pretty sure the dudes that threatened my friend hadn't either. protip: don't wear a shiny, silvery t-shirt in rural montana that has the word "lady" on it

i like to fart and i am crazy (gbx), Thursday, 2 April 2009 15:26 (fifteen years ago) link

Ask him what's the best band in the world?

Tuomas, Thursday, 2 April 2009 15:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Yes, agreed with Tuomas.

ilxor, Thursday, 2 April 2009 15:40 (fifteen years ago) link

ask him whether the next album is gonna as awesome as the previous two - also if they're gonna keep adding guitars to their mix

baaderonixx, Thursday, 2 April 2009 15:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Was definitely going to ask him more about that, as well as the Christina thing.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 April 2009 15:42 (fifteen years ago) link

I have nothing to ask, but I have spun up Velocifero, and it remains as glorious as ever.

Tell him that, if you want!

a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Thursday, 2 April 2009 15:44 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah I don't find it as good as 'Witching Hour' (how could it be) but it's definitely solid. It seems to me Ladytron are summarizing in high speed Depeche Mode's evolution (from cutesy synth pop to a sinister grinding monolith)

baaderonixx, Thursday, 2 April 2009 15:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Hahaha, nicely phrased. I saw them live two years back opening for NIN in London and they had pretty clearly settled into said latter status. Crowd loved 'em!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 April 2009 15:56 (fifteen years ago) link

^ Agree with every word (except early Depeche Mode >>>>> early Ladytron, natch).

When/where is the interview being posted?

Should I go see them tonight?

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 20 April 2009 20:08 (fourteen years ago) link

Yes.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 20 April 2009 20:21 (fourteen years ago) link

Man, they killed. Reminded me about what Chuck said (I paraphrase) about disco rocking harder than metal.

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 15:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah they are ridiculously great live these days -- I caught them two years back opening for NIN in London and that pretty much made me a full on believer instead of a casual fan.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 15:52 (fourteen years ago) link

They were great in Belfast a few months ago as well. Burnin' Up and Destroy Everything You Touch were godly.

Chris in Belfast, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 16:27 (fourteen years ago) link

The only things that would have made it better are both in this clip (coincidentally recorded in Houston in '06 either at the same venue or down the street @ tha Meridian)

A. Shocking Blue cover
B. The vocals a little higher in the mix

when i was at uni in liverpool, (circa '03-05) they had a club night called "evol" in this little basement club. the guy members would dj and they had loads of cool guest djs like ivan smagghe and mark moore. had this great secret after-hours party atmosphere.

and they'd always be up for the odd convo about music or whatever, real chill fellas.

max arrrrrgh, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 23:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Yes! About fucking time ... what did people think of the two Marnie solo records that came out during the hiatus?

Full of bile and Blue Nile denial (Turrican), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 16:48 (six years ago) link

I liked them, the first better than the second. that said, I can't listen to the record anymore -- I got a lot of angry email about what I thought was a positive review, and every time one of the songs comes up on shuffle I'm reminded of it and have to turn it off

algorithm is a dancer (katherine), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 17:00 (six years ago) link

Nice to have them back although, come on, this sounds exactly like Broadcast!

daavid, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 18:19 (six years ago) link

Cool, I've missed them. And I didn't know about the solo albums so now I've got something to listen to while I wait for the new record to come out.

sounds kinda velocifero-y to me.

KevRus, Friday, 2 March 2018 21:03 (six years ago) link

Prefer the album teaser to the actual single, but am pretty stoked nonetheless

Google Atheist (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 2 March 2018 21:59 (six years ago) link

ok thank god the album teaser had me worried, if I want to listen to Broadcast then I listen to Broadcast or any of the 100 bands that sound like them already

update: this is growing on me even more, it's easily the best thing anyone from ladytron has done in years

New single!

I still need to listen with proper speakers but so far it sounds great! It reminds me of Propaganda.

Agreed, this sounds really good.

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 17 August 2018 12:55 (five years ago) link

Yes! I've been looking forward to this. Marnie's solo albums have both been very good, mind.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 17 August 2018 13:12 (five years ago) link

Slight adoption of the retro outrun synthwave vibe in there somewhere? Quite like this

five months pass...

the new album is out, and it's...a trip.

the highs are high, the lows are low (sometimes very low), and the overall production is...uhh...weird.

but I'm kinda digging it. 'Deadzone,' 'You've Changed,' and 'Paper Highways' are pretty fun.

KevRus, Saturday, 2 February 2019 06:46 (five years ago) link

The leaked tracks really didn’t impress. Still, I pledged to get the physical edition so looking forward to it. Love the cover art

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Saturday, 2 February 2019 07:44 (five years ago) link

ok I've warmed up to this a lot, and I now think it's actually pretty fantastic. Like 'Witching Hour,' this feels like a quintessentially 'winter' album, and I'm here for it.

KevRus, Thursday, 7 February 2019 17:49 (five years ago) link

unsurprisingly, I love it, it's like velocifero but even angrier

the album art is also amazing

end to end bangers

good record

nxd, Monday, 11 February 2019 11:01 (five years ago) link

It's a grower. Some good hooks but is it me or is this record brick-walled to death? Pretty disappointing since the music often blurs into a flat mush.
Song wise it feels like a slight throwback to the pre-Witching Hour period. This could have come out after Light & Magic

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 12 February 2019 09:09 (five years ago) link

Some good hooks but is it me or is this record brick-walled to death

this.
I have tried several times to give this a whole listen through, but its just way too painful.
hopefully its just the digital promo, and things are better on release, as this album sounds really bad.
shame, there are some cracking songs hidden in there.

mark e, Tuesday, 12 February 2019 09:44 (five years ago) link

I know "it's thematically appropriate" is a cop-out but in this case it is kind of thematically appropriate

fwiw the best track here is "deadzone," up there with "silent shout" in terms of songs that embody/address trauma

theorizing your yells (katherine), Tuesday, 12 February 2019 15:48 (five years ago) link

a solid 7.7 from p4k!
