I played this game so much! I can't anymore though; once you start playing Counterstrike you can't ever again get used to games where you have to sit and blast on someone for 5+ whole seconds until they go down. You shoot and shoot and get all frustrated like "AAARGH WHY WON'T YOU DIE!?".

The best is when you're on a team who actually cares about winning; you can be a scout or an engineer and get stuff done! W:ET is probably the class-based FPS with the best balance.

Never actually played this, since it came out a year before I got SW:Battleground and finally gave up my embargo against online gaming.

New Wolfenstein on the way for the Sony and Xbox current and next-gen platforms. The earlier Xbox games were enjoyable enough. Will buy this.

The last Wolfenstein was the one that flipped back and forth between our world and a ghostly / negative world, right? The Veil? It wasn't groundbreaking, but some fun run & gun action, and decent graphics. What didn't you care for?

Anyone playing the new one?

calstars, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 02:38 (eight years ago) link

Yep! I'm really enjoying it. Surprisingly effective stealth options a lot of the time, and the story is actually quite interesting, with unusually well-drawn characters. As a Scot, I was somewhat taken aback that the 'foreign-language only' subtitles option also includes subtitles for the game's English-speaking Scottish character...

not playing it but what i've seen seems cutscene-heavy

am0n, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 16:34 (eight years ago) link

I played the new one a bunch the other day. Not terribly cutscene heavy (they aren't very long anyways) and incredibly fun! Good combat! I didn't get very far, snuck into the first castle, but the set pieces were all pretty impressive!

I haven't played a Wolfenstein since 3D but this was lots of fun. You can do stealth if you want but you can also blast your way through like Rambo.

played the an hour or so of the newest wolfenstein but it just seems like dumb shmup stuff, all combat no room to do anything else. not awful but not that great, was expecting something more stealthlike and tense. this was the opening level/first castle thing though, does it change after this?

NI, Wednesday, 2 July 2014 03:44 (eight years ago) link

someone posted a cutscene involving Jimi Hendrix that convinced me that I will play this ridiculous thing someday

Nhex, Wednesday, 2 July 2014 04:07 (eight years ago) link

isnt the first level almost like a framing device in that everything after is very different

anonanon, Wednesday, 2 July 2014 04:50 (eight years ago) link

ah great, i'll persist with it awhile in that case

NI, Thursday, 3 July 2014 03:57 (eight years ago) link

The first level is a training level pretty much! Don't judge the game on that (although if you don't find it fun you might not find the rest of the game fun)

antexit, Thursday, 3 July 2014 19:06 (eight years ago) link

I'm glad to read this. I had the same worry as, like NI, I've only played that first castle. I mean, it was fine, but if the game is 12 hours of that I'll be disappointed. I've been reassured (here and from a friend) that isn't the case, fortunately.

CraigG, Friday, 11 July 2014 14:59 (eight years ago) link

i persevered with this (at time of posting above i was a mere minute away from finishing that first level) but it just isn't grabbing me. can't work out what separates meh games like this and watchdogs, from not conceptually dissimilar but incredible games like far cry 3 and sc: blacklist

NI, Saturday, 12 July 2014 03:51 (eight years ago) link

well-honed mechanics?

♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Saturday, 12 July 2014 06:23 (eight years ago) link

all above got well-reviewed though, plenty of fans on here so it's maybe just me. guess i find wolfenstein just real dumb, bogstandard shootemup with a tacked-on stealth element. and watchdogs just has so much added crap it becomes exhausting to wade through to get to the 'fun'

NI, Saturday, 12 July 2014 16:49 (eight years ago) link

I had more fun playing Wolfenstein than FC3, personally. I really felt everything that supposedly added "depth" just had this value-added feel that was really lame. I would have enjoyed the game EXACTLY as much if it was nothing but the base assaults, one after another.

I was disappointed in Wolfenstein that there wasn't a completely satisfactory BFG type gun. That seems like such a big part of old-school shooters, the one gun where you get it and it's OH SHIT IT'S ON NOW YOU FUCKERS

antexit, Saturday, 12 July 2014 19:19 (eight years ago) link

a fully maxed-out LKW is pretty satisfactory

and man i like the first level more than most of them, only one where you get an SMG

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Monday, 14 July 2014 19:51 (eight years ago) link

is this game an on-rails type ish or open world like other bethesda stuff

ⓢⓗⓘⓣ (am0n), Monday, 14 July 2014 21:51 (eight years ago) link

very linear. they mix it up with a bit of 'walk around, talk to this guy, get this, do that' but its mostly hoops you jump through for the next gun fight. And the gun fights just aren't that fun, think that's what makes it a let down. like it has a whole perk system, but none of them seem to add anything fun either.

the neogaf fps snobs all love it tho

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Tuesday, 15 July 2014 22:54 (eight years ago) link

the lack of smg is a bit of a bummer I will admit. mitigated somewhat if you dual-wield the three-shot pistols and spam the triggers

Is New Order worth $9 in the Flash sale? More importantly, is it worth 49 gigs on my rapidly filled PS4 hard drive?

new order is genuinely fantastic - go for it!

After I pulled the plug on "Sekiro" I wanted to clear my mind with something a lot less taxing, so I picked "New Order." I've never played a single "Wolfenstein" game before, but this is pretty good ott exploitation escapism. Runs really well, and you can see it setting the stage for "Doom," which rules.
