i've got a tip for you: burmese cafe, 72nd and roosevelt, jackson heights.

lauren, Friday, 9 March 2007 16:27 (seventeen years ago) link

what did you get Lauren? We went (w/ Morgan) not long after it opened. Nicole had a spicy tofu salad she loved. M got something a bit weird, I got a chicken dish that tasted really really strange. I don't think I liked it, but I certainly wouldn't say it was bad. We also got this bread with special bean appetizer thing that was amazing. KInd of like paratha with some beans on top. The free tea was really good till someone said it tasted like tobacco.

That block is now my favorite because Unidentified Flying Chicken and Zabb are right next door.

dan selzer, Friday, 9 March 2007 18:26 (seventeen years ago) link

the tea is really smoky/tobacco-y. it reminded me a little of old school lapsang.

we had:
squash fritters, which were amazing - long spears of some kind of asian squash, expcrtly cooked. one of the best fried dishes ever.
green tea leaf salad - really good and complex. i have no idea what all was in it, but it included bird chili, roasted chickpeas, candlenuts, cabbage, carrot, and green tea leaves.
goat curry - nice and mellow, very tender. stewed with cinnamon, cardomom pods, and cloves.
pork and mango pickle - HOLY SHIT. so, so good. nice fatty pork and chunks of sour pickled mango in an incredibly delicious reddish gravy.

i'm excited to go back.

the girls next to us had "hot and dry eel," which looked delicious. also, fried quail! yay!

lauren, Friday, 9 March 2007 18:39 (seventeen years ago) link

the green tea leaf salad is supposed to be key, says Siestema and chowhound...did it keep you up?

dan selzer, Friday, 9 March 2007 19:56 (seventeen years ago) link

nah. the ratio of tea leaves to other ingredients is pretty small, really. i want to try the tofu salad next time. it sounded great. also the pig ear/tongue one, but i might have to go by myself for that one. it seems like the kind of thing that no one would let on the table.

lauren, Friday, 9 March 2007 20:18 (seventeen years ago) link

i'd go next store. Zabb was really good...as authentic as Sri Pra Phai and much less crowded.

dan selzer, Friday, 9 March 2007 20:41 (seventeen years ago) link

you'd go next store? do you mean next door? i know zabb is supposed to be good, but if i'm going back to that block then i'm going to burmese cafe.

lauren, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:28 (seventeen years ago) link

is that also the block tibetan yak restaurant is on?

bell_labs, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:33 (seventeen years ago) link

i think t.y. is on the next block.

lauren, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:34 (seventeen years ago) link

wow, I knew that looked funny when I typed Next Store. I'm totally burnt out right now AND totally high on graphic design, having the most fun I've had in ages on a project.

Tibeten Yak is the next block or two...haven't been but I've been to two tibetan nepalese places on Queens Blvd and neither were that good. Anyway, they changed the name from Tibetan Yak to Himilayan Yak because they were actaully Nepalese and not Tibetan?

dan selzer, Friday, 9 March 2007 21:55 (seventeen years ago) link

also sort of nearby is the newest incarnation of what used to be pearson's, reopened as rangers in the back of the same bar on 35th ave.

lauren, Friday, 9 March 2007 22:02 (seventeen years ago) link

lauren wanna take a stab at what was in that sour pork's sauce/gravy as it sounds amazing and i live nowhere near a burmese restaurant?

strongohulkington, Friday, 9 March 2007 22:04 (seventeen years ago) link

cursory googling turned up this recipe: http://www.asiafood.org/recipe_list_link.cfm?recipeid=451

i think that this is pretty close. the paste frying process sounds like a bit of a ball-ache, but from my limited experience you really want the separation of oil and solids and the evaporation of any water that results. as for the mango element, i'm kind of at a loss but i'd recommend getting pickled mango at an indian/asian grocery and cooking it for the entire time along with the pork.

lauren, Friday, 9 March 2007 22:23 (seventeen years ago) link

oh, and i'd recommend getting untrimmed pork shoulder for the meat and cubing it.

lauren, Friday, 9 March 2007 22:24 (seventeen years ago) link

thanks! i think i'll try it tonight. exciting.

strongohulkington, Friday, 9 March 2007 22:26 (seventeen years ago) link

please do let us know how it goes.

lauren, Friday, 9 March 2007 22:29 (seventeen years ago) link

i loved the dumplings at tibetan yak, and the lamb curry.
zabb was very good but i prefer sripraphai!
must eat at burmese cafe soooon.
i should really move back to queens....

bell_labs, Friday, 9 March 2007 23:41 (seventeen years ago) link

sounds amazing

I WOULD EAT ALL THIS QUEENS FOODS

sanskrit, Saturday, 10 March 2007 02:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Zabb gets some cred for being the less-known small restaraunt filled with more actual asian people then Sripraphai's crowd of manhattanite foodies.

dan selzer, Saturday, 10 March 2007 04:43 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm not sure if what i cobbled together last night really had anything to do with that recipe, but it was good nonetheless.

strongohulkington, Saturday, 10 March 2007 16:58 (seventeen years ago) link

just had lunch at SPP, had chili fried rice with pork and omellete and green beans and a bowl of some kind broth with cilantro floating around in it and crispy watercress salad and a bite of red curry shrimp and two thai iced teas.

dan selzer, Saturday, 10 March 2007 19:34 (seventeen years ago) link

i think the crispy watercress salad might be my favorite thing at srip!
that, and the crispy pork & chinese broccoli
zabb has a good version of this as well! but not AS good.

i am thai food fixated today...

bell_labs, Sunday, 11 March 2007 02:13 (seventeen years ago) link

bon chon, mmm! the fried chicken is so crispy and good! octopus w/ glass noodles was really tasty, too, but pricey for the portion size.

lauren, Sunday, 11 March 2007 22:06 (seventeen years ago) link

manhattan or jackson heights? or is it a different place with both locations?

dan selzer, Sunday, 11 March 2007 22:08 (seventeen years ago) link

no, northern blvd. sort of flushing/murray hill.

lauren, Sunday, 11 March 2007 22:25 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, thats' the one that I thought was Jackson Heights. I'd only heard it was on Norther Blvd so I assumed wrong.

dan selzer, Sunday, 11 March 2007 23:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Having googled that up, I didn't quite realize the anti-semitic usage of that word. I think I had only heard it used by Jews before and so thought it was ok. I had only been trying to make a joke based on this thread title, a Pink Floyd song, and the antisemitism that sanskrit got banned for.
