my stupid florida aunt wanted to name one of her kids "dakota" if it was a boy. fortunately it was a girl and they name her "courtney." at least now the kid doesn't have to be some kind of cowboy to validate his existence.

Hunter and Raven were both Gladiators.

---- (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 14:51 (nineteen years ago) link

The data show that, on average, a person with a distinctively black name—whether it is a woman named Imani or a man named DeShawn—does have a worse life outcome than a woman named Molly or a man named Jake. But it isn't the fault of his or her name. If two black boys, Jake Williams and DeShawn Williams, are born in the same neighborhood and into the same familial and economic circumstances, they would likely have similar life outcomes. But the kind of parents who name their son Jake don't tend to live in the same neighborhoods or share economic circumstances with the kind of parents who name their son DeShawn. And that's why, on average, a boy named Jake will tend to earn more money and get more education than a boy named DeShawn. DeShawn's name is an indicator—but not a cause—of his life path.

I had two students named "Marquis" last year. And they didn't pronounce it like Marcus.

I also had Quonicus, Royal, Queen, Precious, a couple of LaToyas, hmm any strange names are leaving me now as I really no longer saw them as strange.

My sister-in-law's name is chaka.

and before you think i'm a racist / complete asshole (wait u already do...well someee of u _locals_ do), do i actually have to pre-emptively state that i am *not* trying to offend anyone here by giving into generalizations, and that i could just as easily list the most common indian or should i say DESI nicknames (of ppl whose natural habitat is the uni library's computer lab and wear 80s clothes "unironically" ) are stuff like Pinky, Tunku, and Bonny etc that few here would get, as well as those strange attempts at hinglish crossovers, like "Shaun," or "Neal / Neil" or "Jay / Jai" and "Sheila," "Lina," "Nina," and all that?!! k? (and im theoretically just an " ABCD" who's sold out with the englishization of my own nickname by spelling it w/ a C instead of a K on this board anyway, so i have no cred here)

oh, and i have problems buying that black female list. where is
