but the whole article, I'm loving the new Padres thing, but the Jays are a mess, predictably

my personal favorites:

1977 pittsburgh pirates
1975 houston astros
1978 san diego padres

the new padres uni is fantastic, but the devil jays thing..my god.
pretty much all alternates are crap; this is another reason the yankees rule.

John (jdahlem), Friday, 26 March 2004 03:57 (fifteen years ago) link

i like the dodgers home unis maybe the best... that impossible white with the deep red and royal blue.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 26 March 2004 03:58 (fifteen years ago) link

Have I told the world how much I hate navy blue jerseys? I hate them.

new red twins cap = hott. Uni-watch is way off base on this one

Indians Jacobs field patch = dud city! christ!!

ok I like blue jerseys if they match the pants:

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 26 March 2004 15:37 (fifteen years ago) link

WTF. This chicago team has a whale in it's logo. Sweet. i wonder what porpoise it serves?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 26 March 2004 15:44 (fifteen years ago) link

It seems Uniwatch is doing much better at Slate than it did at the Voice.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 27 March 2004 00:03 (fifteen years ago) link

Uh, Lawrence, the whale is because it's the uniform of the Chicago Whales, the Federal League team.

one year passes...
The Brewers and their fans will turn back the clock every Sunday at Miller Park next season.

The team has unveiled "new" uniforms for Sunday home games which, as expected, are recreations of the team's garb from 1978-1993. Blue pinstripes adorn the white jerseys and pants, "BREWERS" is stitched across the chest and the caps feature the popular "ball and glove" logo.

I'm not surprised I've seen the hideous Astros rainbow jersey on the subway at least once, or the 1974ish Atlanta top (w/ feathers on sleeve), but also a peanut-yellow Padre shirt w/ WINFIELD 31.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Yay to the Brewers!: Cleverly designed corporate logos

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 2 December 2005 21:49 (thirteen years ago) link

I always figured the Astros 70s and 80s desert rainbow was fitting for a team that looked like they played in a warehouse like the Astrodome. I don't remember the Stros pulling that one out of the mothballs too often.

I don't think the Padres have ever had a uni that didn't look like something out of McDonald's drive through.

The Brewers fun hat is the one from the early 70s with the big frosty mug of beer on the front.

The Mariners had that trident on the hat forever until it was pointed out that that is considered a maritime symbol of bad luck. Oddly enough they seemed to start winning around the time they dropped the trident.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Saturday, 3 December 2005 03:22 (thirteen years ago) link

I actually like the Padres' brown and yellow uniforms up until the '76-'77 road uniforms, which were ugly. Adding orange in 1980 was a mistake, but the '85-'90 uniforms were OK.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 3 December 2005 06:27 (thirteen years ago) link

No representation on the Hall of Fame site of the White Sox' shorts that they wore that one year in teh '70s. Did they only do that for one game?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 3 December 2005 06:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Brewers 78-93 uniforms >>>>> current uniforms

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 3 December 2005 16:40 (thirteen years ago) link

The Brewers' current uniforms look just like the Padres' -- like an upscale yet crappy "river restaurant" in some chintzy downtown revitalization area.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 07:43 (thirteen years ago) link

how about the a's in your face green and yellow unis? maybe they toned things down when it was suggested they were part of global cabal that included british petroleum and church's fried chicken.

or not.

Lukas on All-Star uni shenanigans:

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 17 July 2008 14:05 (eleven years ago) link

Alex Rodriguez has gone ivory-footed in the All-Star Game at least since his Rangers days. Writing in his now-defunct blog two years ago (yes, A-Rod had a blog), he explained why: "When I was a kid, I used to watch the All-Star Game on TV. I grew up a big Mets fan, as many of you know..."

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 17 July 2008 15:37 (eleven years ago) link

a couple things:

1)I was really bummed to see that the Rays removed any hint of green from their new uni's.

2)The Mets have the best uni's in all of sports. The orange highlights KILL me everytime.

i mean he took existing logos, put them on a different type of shirt, and added a random corporate sponsor. doesn't really require 2500 words of insight into his 'design process'.

at least there are no pink versions for the ladies tho

mookieproof, Wednesday, 2 January 2013 22:05 (six years ago) link

I was just thinking last night about starting a "when do you think MLB/NFL/NBA uniforms will be logo'd up like they do in soccer or motor sports?" thread.

WilliamC, Wednesday, 2 January 2013 22:13 (six years ago) link

think he did a good job! (regardless of how much effort might have been needed)
i think it's more than just using a "different type of shirt" tho... i like the way he incorporated the nuances of soccer jerseys, like the horizontal/diagonal stripes for example - and i didn't even know about the stars/championships thing.
and speaking as a designer, i never read someone's blithering about their design process etc unless i'm *really* interested (so i read the blue jays part).

Playing baseball is hard. For players new to the Diamondbacks -- who have eight different uniform combinations, more than any club in baseball -- so is getting dressed.
