Old-school -

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:04 (nineteen years ago) link

The best was that crazy slug fest that the old school Braves and Padres had with Pascual Perez and Craig Nettles in the middle of the action. I saw that game.

"In one of the ugliest brawl-filled games in ML history, the Braves beat the Padres 5–3 in Atlanta. The trouble begins when Atlanta's Pascual Perez hits Alan Wiggins in the back with the first pitch of the game, and escalates as the Padres pitchers retaliate by throwing at Perez all four times he comes to the plate. All in all, the game features two bench-clearing brawls, the 2nd of which includes several fans, and 19 ejections, including both managers and both replacement managers. Padres manager Dick Williams will be suspended for 10 days and fined $10,000, while Braves manager Joe Torre and five players will each receive 3-game suspensions. But the brawl in Atlanta, as Dave Campbell observed, 'woke the Padres up out of their doldrums.'"

San Diego went to the world series that year, beating the Cubs :( and then losing to the Tigers, who were unbelievably good that year.

I was the envy of my fellow, um, preschoolers after witnessing this one, complete with threatened forfeit:

http://www.baseballlibrary.com/baseballlibrary/features/flashbacks/10_08_1973.stm

My dad and I didn't see the start of it since there was a fight going on in the row behind us... The best detail was Pedro Borbon ripping into a Mets cap with his teeth.

Also saw one at the Coney Island park two summers ago that went on for about 20 minutes, complete with a visiting player nearly charging a heckler in the stands.

The funniest one I've seen on TV was the Boston guy -- Izzy Alcantara? -- taking out the catcher with a rear kick before charging the mound.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 23 April 2004 14:38 (nineteen years ago) link

The only one I've witnessed in person was last year at the local low-A ballgame, and it was only an awkward near-brawl at that (I guess that's why these kids are in the minors). Lots of milling around, players shouting and needing to be held back by teammates, that sort of thing.

Situation: CR Kernels up early on the Battle Creek Yankees, some dude comes to bat for the Kernels who's already hit a monster home run. He lays into another pitch and hits it a mile down the LF line. From our seats on the 3B line this ball is clearly foul, but the ump rules it a HR, much to the stadium's bewilderment.

Before the HR call is made the batter takes a casual stroll down the 1B line watching the ball. Presumably he thinks it's foul like everyone else, but the Yankees manager thought he was showing up the dugout by admiring his second HR. So they plunk him the next time he comes to bat. The Kernels respond by throwing behind the first batter in the top half of the next inning. It took several seconds for the batter to realize that he was the subject of retaliation, so there were some confused moments as he stood around the batter's box thinking about the next pitch while his teammates gathered outside the dugout waiting for him to charge the mound and make it OK to officially clear the benches. Kernels come out of their dugout, there's some milling around near home plate and the pitcher is ejected. Warnings, etc.

A new pitcher gets warmed up in the pen and comes out to finish this AB. In what I think was a totally unintentional act, he beans the same batter with his first pitch. Tempers really flare, the benches empty again (the crowd is going nuts, myself included, at this point), and it takes a long time to restore order. Surprisingly, no punches were thrown. Pitcher and managers ejected, game resumes and the Yankees are sent home losers.

Fun at the ol' ballpark, to be sure.

A dust-up between the Giants and the 'Stros while Randy Johnson was with them. Don't remember much of the actual "brawl," but I believe there was some vigorous pushing and shoving so that the Big Unit lost his hat, and later, when order had been reestablished and everyone was just standing around the mound, he had mistakenly picked up and put on a Giant's cap.

the one i remember the most was george bell karate chopping bruce kison when he charged the mound. if i remember correctly the back injury kison suffered hastened the end of his career.

i can't remember the specifics of my favorite brawl moment. it was the sox vs. ??? and the sox pitcher (???) hit someone on the other team (at this point i'm thinking it was either the blue jays or tigers). said batter charged the mound. i was watching the game on tv enjoying a smoke and remembered thinking "this guy (the pitcher) is gonna get f'ed up". the batter came straight towards the mound when out of nowhere (well, actually from his position at first base) a young and still fleet-footed mo vaughn comes shooting over and slams into the batter hitting him so hard that both were knocked out of the picture frame. the replays showed mo had perfect form on the tackle, head up, ass down, put his shoulder to the guy's gut then lift, drive and drop. good times.

I quite enjoyed A-Rod's careful enunciation of his "discussion" with Arroyo. Even I could understand it, and I don't even lip-read.

I think my 76-year-old Red Sox-lovin' mom could lip-read that.

Judging by the pic above, Varitek should be on the short list of Moes for the Farrelly Brothers' upcoming Three Stooges film.

As much fun as it was to see A-Rod get poked in his purty face after gettin' all bitchy, Varitek keeping the mask on was rather bush.

my favorite part of that brawl (and favorite part of any baseball brawl) is the guy who comes in to play hero and wind up getting separated from the rest of his team thereby leaving himself open to a thrashing. this time it was tanyon sturtze who came up behind gabe kapler and hog collared him only to be dragged away from the pile by david ortiz and trot nixon.

and morbs, i think the fact that varitek not only kept his mask on but also his glove shows that he wasn't prepared for the situation to escalate as quickly as it did.

Conan suited up (complete with a fake handlebar moustache) to take some cuts and was talking trash at the pitcher in that same type of vernacular. i remember when jim rice went into the stands at yankee stadium, that was classic. some guy stole rice's hat on a foul pop so jim ed jumped into the stands to get it. the look of surprise/shock/horror on the guy's face as he realized rice was coming after him was great.

i also remember claudell washington going into the stands at fenway but that was because he didn't realize how close to the wall in right he was. it resulted in the slowest inside the park home run i've ever seen. bill buckner looked like the tin man rounding the bases. i swear he had no knee cartilege left, you could almost hear the bone on bone grinding as he chugged around third.

VB, I was going to include a lame lengthy disclaimer re: big pecs != HR power, but, shit, if you have that sort of physique, don't swing DOWN on the ball like a Walt Hriniak reject. Rob Deer that shit, Kapler!

Also, I thought the pitch hit Senora A-Rod (oh snap!) on the elbow. Regardless, that was a strange time for "the best player in baseball" to Cowboy Up to the original Marlboro Men. Also, I've never heard of a team headhunting a player for hitting the game-winning SINGLE in the previous contest. Unless Bob Brenley was the manager.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:08 (nineteen years ago) link

gygax, seriously, WHY DO YOU CARE

i mean, in that other thread you were hinting that jeter might be a better shortstop, which would've gotten you strung up or worse in most parts a year ago. and he's had an off year, but it's not THAT off.

first of all, the best player in baseball tag is 75% agent hype from his free agency period after the 2000 season, a season in which he really WAS the best player in baseball. the tag stuck because in every year since he's been the best player in the american league, and the best all-around player in the game. even if he IS past his prime, you have to a allow a window for that perception to fade (especially now that he's a yankee(?)). and i'd still say he's probably the best all-around player in the game. IT IS JUST NOT A BIG DEAL OK. this is just some my-guy's-dick-is-bigger-than-yours-and-well-i-hate-the-yankees-too thing i'm sure, but gimme a break, like bonds is underrated by anybody?? get over it.

(and now i've really opened myself up so you're gonna continue to pull that shit just cuz, grr)

getting on topic now, i'm glad a-rod did what he did, and i don't think it was less about HIM being hit than it was about the yankees getting drilled left and right all year (and all last) by the sox and left unable to retaliate because of warnings issued. if a pitcher couldn't put a stop to it, a player had to, and a-rod did for this series. tell em when enough is enough, you know?

John (jdahlem), Monday, 26 July 2004 17:41 (nineteen years ago) link

as a red sox fan i for one want to thank a-rod for waking this team up. they've been sleepwalking since may day and that fight was the first sign of life they've exhibited all summer. i'm actually hopeful they can win the wild card now.

thanks a-rod!

Castellanos did talk about the first benches-clearing incident, which led to a brawl in the sixth inning. With Miguel Cabrera and Austin Romine tussling on the ground, Castellanos went diving in to try to break things up.

There, Castellanos got punched, by his count, five times, including once from Gary Sanchez, whose sucker-punch game seems to match his power game.

“You go look at that, how many punches did I throw? Zero,” Castellanos said. “And I had ... five people on top of me, and I’m getting drilled from all angles. For somebody that’s not throwing any punches? You guys be the judge of that.”
