and, yes, everyone knows the "spin spin sugar" remix, so more obscure recommendations are appreciated!

'oi' by more fire crew (?) is a bit of a classic if that's the kinda thing you're after.

_sf_, Sunday, 29 September 2002 15:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

ahhh, i see... you're after SPEED garage. not that there's much discernable difference between speed and uk apart from the emceeing. there was one really good one called sumthin like 'spingroove' by i can't remember who, it had a really skronky squelch bassline. think it charted quite high actually in around '98. 'i like to move it' was definitely speed garage, but perhaps not obscure enough for what you're after.

_sf_, Sunday, 29 September 2002 15:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

no, i'm after the hardcore populist stuff too, just i know the REALLY well known stuff alreadt: "cape fear", "sound bwoy burial", etc.

Jess, pick up the Basslines CD on Moonshine; it has EVERYTHING you want on it (not every single song, just everything you like about the genre). Pick to click: Gisele Jackson's "Love Commandments" remix (on Basslines)--NASTIEST FUCKING RAMPAGING B-LINE EVAH!

i assume you're familiar with Double 99's 'RIP Groove' and 187 Lockdown's 'Gunman' - these were the big speed garage anthems of the time...i've kinda forgotten everything else of the genre sadly...apart from all those brilliant Armand Van Helden remixes

here's some others

Todd Terry 'Somethin Goin On In Your Soul (Loop Da Loop mix - THINK thats the right mix)'

? - features the lyric 'Lonely people' - long shot!

RIP Crew 'We R E' (remix of the legendary proto-jungle anthem)

Scott Garcia's "It's A London Thing" and Tina Moore's "Never Gonna Let You Go" were unavoidable in the summer of 97, and quite right too - both excellent. "Gunman" is wikkid, as was the follow-up, "Kung Fu" - in fact, the whole 187 Lockdown album's pretty good. There are other classics I can't quite put my finger on right now - gimme a tick...

That "Flowers" tune rocked, but that's maybe a bit late for you?

tina moore was more the 2 step sound as opposed to 4/4 speed garage tho, same with 'flowers'

Wildcat's "Houseclash" (can't remember if vol 1 or vol 2 was the good'n) was a classic. Multiple ragga/jungle samples, a verrrry deep bassline and that good upbeat tempo.

Was also always partial to Underground Distortion's "Everything is large". Super-scratchy snares and timestretch overload on the break.

Finally don't know who produced it, but I've got a white from early '98 called 'Rub a dub' which has the 4beat scratchy snare style, but loads all the snares onto the back end of the bar in a timbo style. Has a horn loop and a dub bassline, and was devastating at the time.

All good suggestions, although 'Never Gonna Let You Go', and 'Flowers' are 2 Step. I have just recommended this tune in another thread, and in my opinion the greatest garage track of all time, not just Speed Garage...well it's my favourite at least...

Can I also add one of my favorites: Banana Republic's "Bad Boys move in Silence"

i love it when you buy some records on discogs and instead of using stiff cardboard to line the box they just throw some random dollar records in there. even better it's dance 12s, like this single sided promo stuffed in an order that showed up yesterday.

it might be the worst speed garage i've ever heard!

https://soundcloud.com/ken1975/the-full-monty-montius-maximus

i think i'm going to keep it

CLASSIC

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 21 May 2023 23:13 (ten months ago) link

the infernal honking between the first and second drop

the late great, Monday, 22 May 2023 01:29 (ten months ago) link

ppl are going to be like “that’s just bad hard house but with the spin spin sugar drums”

in my defense, based on the title alone i was going to chuck in the trash without even listening, until i took a closer look at the promo sticker

actually wait they stole the whole hook from spin spin sugar and disguised it as infernal honking, didn’t they?

boxedjoy, Monday, 22 May 2023 09:53 (ten months ago) link

I'm actually gutted this isn't a speed garage mix of "You Sexy Thing" but yes this is suitably awful

boxedjoy, Monday, 22 May 2023 09:56 (ten months ago) link

Nah that’s a Voodoo Ray rip right?

Terrible example but I have a soft spot for this kind of track tbh. Especially old Loop Da Loop remixes that have barely anything to do with the original records they are based on.

No idea why anyone decided this should be almost 9 minutes long, but this kind of thing:

you can get so many amazing garage (speed and 2-step) tracks just by buying cheap millenium chartpop CD-singles, the b-sides always have a remix which bears no relation to the original.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sppZ2NVhCA0

like, who is the market for a speed garage remix of Space?

boxedjoy, Monday, 22 May 2023 10:19 (ten months ago) link

anyway that neonjoe84 Youtube channel has some amazing examples of this terrible idea:

boxedjoy, Monday, 22 May 2023 10:21 (ten months ago) link

Also to get all hardcore ‘nuum on it, that Montius Maximus track is by Mark Williams who was in ‘A Homeboy, A Hippie and a Funky Dred’ (who put out the breakbeat hardcore classic ‘Total Confusion’) and was part of Rising High Collective with Caspar Pound (who among other things released some of the first Spiral Tribe affiliated 12”s and some pioneering UK proto trance etc)

No idea how he got from there to ‘Voodoo Ray’ with honking noises but that’s quite a legacy tbf.

Xp I’ll see your Space remix and raise you a completely unnecessary 187 Lockdown remix of Alabama 3
