I see the eventual release of multiple, many-tracked concept albums, possibly with multiple singers, certainly with multiple musical styles. I also envisage a revival of show tunes and torch songs; viz PAPERCUTS!, the musical.

Tim looks into his crystal ball and sees:

- more producers jumping on the glitch-house bandwagon - a splintering of r&b/hip hop into a number of different hybrids, although they will remain interchangable for artists - funk and house yeah, but also dancehall, techno and (mad prediction) garage. - jungle finally catches on and gets songful, experiencing slight upsurge in popularity. - Cheiron producers go house.

Electro revival - see Two Lone Swordsmen's emerging Rotter's Golf Club label.

I see seriousness giving way to happy quirkiness and lack of seriousness. I think if the New Pornographers were to make a video for "My Slow Descent Into Alcoholism" they could get huge if it was orchestrated perfectly and I think that would breed a whole new slew of quirkiness and fun, almost like nonseriousness would be the new rebellion, rather than angry rebellion, kinda like the new wave movement. I am most definitely wrong, though. Bands and fans like to take themselves seriously.

There must be something new coming out of Sweden soon, I think maybe "the Ark" (haven't heard them!)...hmmm apparently Sweden is the third biggest music exporter and Max Martin is one of the most successful song writers around today.

I predict long dresses. After an overexposure to navels, I suspect a revival of the Singing Nun look. One can only hope!

lloyd cole and harriet wheeler duet on 'little baby nothing' and 'hurry on sundown' complete with 2 step hindustrial progfolk remixes - most of ILM readers perish in a masturbatory frenzy and thus there is no opposition to the evil emperor albarn ( boo! )except the tumescent jizzcore of arch-rapscallions Momus and MC Paul Barman who lead the ferric jihad against the twat-inna-cap.

me mam sez eye is fuckin prophetic !

krystal balls, Monday, 7 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

That would be so hilarious.

Ally, Monday, 7 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i want more glitch-rap.

and if paul bastard barman hates damon albarn so much, then why do they share space on the deltron album? he's almost as bad as him anyway.

ethan, Monday, 7 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

albarn must have turned him ,so i guess it's up to Momus - no wonder he's posting class/race questions, he's toolin' up on pranksta rap for that long dark night of the soul when he has to face DAEMON, armed only with a faultering sega saturn gripped tightly in geisha- scented fingers

where is julian clary when we need him ?

from the temple of the jade heart, Tuesday, 8 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i love my sega saturn.

It's all going to sound like Daft Punk. Also, look for some American R&B to be sung with a British accent. A white woman rapper will make waves with an album packed with sex rhymes & she'll tour with Cypress Hill. The prog leanings of indie rock are gong to seep into the mainstream & the next Matchbox 20 will have an album with a 12- minute "Suite" (though the leader will claim it was inspired by Springsteen's "Jungleland" or U2's "Bad.") Cajun music will be the next Cuban music, and Dr. John is the next Santana.

stop mailin' me - here's where the story ends.....?

In the guise of a white panther - the evil XTRMNTR fatally wounds Momus who is then taken to the cathedral of sound, 'guarded' by the hermit Shields, who is still sleeping off a dodgy pie from '92.

Tricksta-MC Paul Barman, having lulled Emperor Albarn ( HISS!)into a false sense of smugass complacency calls in a favour:' Daniel-san, you owe me, automate the limey !' - the honourbound dj rebuilds Momus with an 8track cartridge of Kool Moe Dee and betamax porno .

Momus is carried to the peak of Mt. Fuji where the Powers That Be send the ALL MOTHER (Kym Marsh) to breathe life into your fallen hero and suckle he at her breast. Nourished, he awakes to a choir of castrato cyborgs and vows vengence -

' the pierrot pranksta, gangsta with a clavicord, come Daemon, fall beneath my poison sword ...'

...sequels are usually shit

two weeks pass...
the next trends - 'name' journos do an ILM backlash to preserve own territory, more ILM photos, more people rippin' uz off, more digression - the missus watched TOTP last night and said thomyorke waz tryin to look like van gogh but looked like boris becker - what about that duffel coat in tha nermerair?

I think I predicted Peaches with this one. She was around at this point, I guess, but I didn't know about it. Does that count? How do these other predictions look?

geordie...If this didn't remind me so much of 'prog rock', I'd call it beautiful.

Predictions:
* Fusion of Hip Hop and Country and Western is waaaaay overdue
* A fusion of Emo and Nu-Metal is both strangely implausable AND inevitable.
* Lo-Fi stalwarts like GBV with processed vocals, while Britney goes vocally al dente. This will be the death knells for BOTH acts.
* Triumph the Insult Dogs "Songs in the Key of Poop" sells 3,000,000 copies, starts a new genre of obnoxious animal puppets. Damon Albarn is thus pushed back into the limelight.
* Country and Western flava Boy Bands.

R&B moving back away from processed vocals to increasingly smooth early 90s production

Sterling was right here, too: See Amerie, Nivea, etc.

Oh, speaking of Bollywood...we need a big Bhangra Indie band to pump some life back into the Gavin airplay charts in America.
Get some of that Ravi Shankar+RHCP Shank action goin' on.

Following the new Boo Radley's compilation, the steady emergence of Noise, the rising popularity of Hal and the Magic Numbers, there will be another Sixties revival, similar to Britpop but this time based in America and hinging on a more psychedelic movement.
