Wow, Phil. Howzabout "That Falling Feeling", the best Pink Floyd song that they never wrote?

"Numbers" from K-scope...Wetton's restrained vocal, Simon Phillips' slick drumming, the whole thing sounds so "off-the-cuff" cool.

It's gotta be Manzanera's playing on Eno's "Third Wheel." Out-Fripps Fripp and pure noisiness.

The solos in "Baby's On Fire" is also supposed to be Manzanera rather than Fripp, as I always assumed, so maybe I should pick that instead.

Whoops, I meant to say "Third Uncle."

This: http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0002IE4G6.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg has just turned up in my Recommendations section at Amazon - and (for once) this really does sound as if it could be right up my street.

Amazon give the following description:
"The world 6PM inhabits is that of Phil Manzanera's unconscious memories of psychedelic London. It's a world of dreams, surreal cacti, Captain Beefheart, the early Soft Machine, Pink Floyd, the 'Christmas on Earth' event at Earls Court, Fairport Convention, Terry Riley, John Fowles' 'French Lieutenant's Woman', Julie Christie in 'Far From the Madding Crowd', Miles Davis, The Beatles with Sgt Pepper and the Magical Mystery Tour. Lyrically the songs look backwards and forwards to the present, they speak of loss, 'Broken Dreams', love found 'Love Devotion', friendship 'Wish You Well', dedicated to the late Ian McDonald, and much more. The music is beautifully layered and textured, at times almost classical, featuring oboe, viola, and double bass interwoven with Manzanera's incomparably expressive guitar lines. Given the cast of world famous players on 6PM, it is no surprise that the sonic landscape of 6PM is rich, startling and unique."

You see what I mean? Look at that review; look at that line-up; why it even says "Captain Beefheart"; there are three customer reviews and they're all 5 stars; and I love 801 Live - so why am I even hesitating?

For some reason I'm still looking for another opinion 'though and unfortunately there's AMG review for this one, so I just wondered if anyone here had heard this and if so - what did you think of it?

For the benefit of anyone who may Google their way to this spot in future: 6PM is sadly lacklustre.

"Captain Beefheart" my arse.

Moral: don't make records when you're gutted.

Well, it's certainly the last time I'm ever going to order a CD just because I've read a review where someone's raving about something.

D'OH!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 09:39 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, the quantitative differences there are (a) I raved about it and my raves are trustworthy; (b) it was made 30+ years ago when all the people on it were young and cool and not yet withered into cynical oldsters blah blah Cream reunion blah blah...

How do you all rate him as a guitarist, I am geniunely perplexed as to if he's any good; if so, he's must be a very restrained, subtle great guitarist

great! just check out 801 Live. This year he toured w/David Gilmour, a friend of mine saw him in NYC and said he played straight rhythm guitar way in the background, no solos or exchanges. :-(

his solo on 'Sea Breezes' is still the most bonkers piece of gee-tar i've probably ever heard.

I have a live boot of Roxy in Stockholm in '76. And at the end of "For Your Pleasure," they go into "Diamond Head," during which Manzanera plays this stately, gorgeous melody in this phased, distorted delayed guitar tone that is utterly perfect. It has to be my favorite moment of his...
