"Numbers" from K-scope...Wetton's restrained vocal, Simon Phillips' slick drumming, the whole thing sounds so "off-the-cuff" cool.

It's gotta be Manzanera's playing on Eno's "Third Wheel." Out-Fripps Fripp and pure noisiness.

The solos in "Baby's On Fire" is also supposed to be Manzanera rather than Fripp, as I always assumed, so maybe I should pick that instead.

Amazon give the following description:

You see what I mean? Look at that review; look at that line-up; why it even says "Captain Beefheart"; there are three customer reviews and they're all 5 stars; and I love 801 Live - so why am I even hesitating?

For some reason I'm still looking for another opinion 'though and unfortunately there's AMG review for this one, so I just wondered if anyone here had heard this and if so - what did you think of it?

Yeah, the quantitative differences there are (a) I raved about it and my raves are trustworthy; (b) it was made 30+ years ago when all the people on it were young and cool and not yet withered into cynical oldsters blah blah Cream reunion blah blah...

How do you all rate him as a guitarist, I am geniunely perplexed as to if he's any good; if so, he's must be a very restrained, subtle great guitarist

great! just check out 801 Live. This year he toured w/David Gilmour, a friend of mine saw him in NYC and said he played straight rhythm guitar way in the background, no solos or exchanges. :-(

I have a live boot of Roxy in Stockholm in '76. And at the end of "For Your Pleasure," they go into "Diamond Head," during which Manzanera plays this stately, gorgeous melody in this phased, distorted delayed guitar tone that is utterly perfect. It has to be my favorite moment of his...
