Tell Me About These Musical Acts from Brazil

on first listen some of this stuff is total sub-Tropicalia and/or definitely Tropicalia-derived. The Ronnie Von is from '67 and is fairly odd - doesn't have the songwriting chops of Gil or Veloso, but plenty of interesting things going on, weird combinations of marching band music and sound effects (there's a barking dog used as percussion on one track...?), lots of organ, etc. Bango also very psychedelic rock circa '67 (altho I think the album is later...?)

I have a Ronnie Von album, I think. It's sunny Tropicaliazed soft rock IIRC.

Never even heard of the rest of these folks.

The book "The Brazilian Sound" by Chris McGowan and Ricardo Pessanha is mostly about samba and bossa nova but it says that Ronnie Von used to appear on a Brazilian tv show called Jovem Guarda recorded live in Sao Paulo from 65 to 68. The show was supposedly watched by millions (with girls crying hysterically and boys dancing) and Von they say worked with then rocker Roberto Carlos (later a ballad singer) and Erasmo Carlos to create upbeat, simple Jovem Guarda rock.

Africa Brasil for Jorge Ben, I guess, although I've not heard the two Dusty Groove reissues.

The Gil/Ben album is fantastic if you don't have that although I believe they have both disowned it haha.

Satwa was reissued about the same time as Paebiru by Lula Cortes (of Satwa) and Ze Ramalho. I found Paebiru to be the stronger of the two, so I'd recommend checking that out first.

And while Clube Da Esquina seems the obvious recommendation for Milton Nascimento, I think it's the Lo Borges stuff that stands out on that album. I tend to play Borges's A Via Lactea more often, which has some of the same songs - different versions though - and is dreamy as fuck.

Marconi Notaro is also affiliated with the Satwa/Ze Ramahlo+Lula Cortes camp. The album that was reissued by Time Lag Records is really outstanding. It's got some tropicalia, some of the acoutstic instrumental drift like you find on the Satwa record, and some crazy out rock moments with a lot of electric guitar and weird effects.

I haven't listened to the Marconi Notaro yet. I have No Sub Reino Dos Metazoarios.

I really liked what I listened to of the Satwa, lots of 12-string drone-y folk improvisation goodness

Which album by Notaro did you pick up? I've only heard No Sub Reino, I think it's great.

this is easily my favorite of the batch so far

fantastic rhythms all through this thing, no electric anything as near as I can tell (apart from the bass...?) Lots of really propulsive acoustic guitar grooves, great organic vibe to the whole thing.

re: Chico Buarque's "Construcao" - some really weird, lovely things going on harmonically and melodically on this one, will have to give it a few more listens for it all to sink in.

also listened to the Clube De Esquina, which sounded markedly better and more enveloping on my stereo than it did on my iPod, for some reason. Really great, a very wistful, meandering quality to it that I enjoy. Plus all that reverb = goodness.

Liverpool album is really good - lots of fuzz wah-wah guitar, super-tight rhythm section, schizo song arrangements that shift gears on a dime. easily on a par with other bonafide Tropicalia releases, altho not as wild as Mutantes nor as songwriterly as Gil or Veloso. No Duprat orchestral arrangements either - all two guitars, bass, drums, vocals. great psych-pop.

Manduka album is pretty folky - opening track is a 10-minute long droning acoustic guitar thing, rest of the album maintains a similar rural vibe and pace, fairly mellow altho the hand percussion stuff kicks into high gear towards the end. will probably dump this one from the iPod tho, a bit too aimless in terms of songwriting for my tastes.

Did Dusted used to be better, or is that just my imagination?

I admit I have a personal axe to grind against them now, but yeah the last few things I looked up on there recently were pretty uhhhhhh

that recent reissue is totally worth getting. A more americanized sound than a lot of the other acts mentioned on this thread, but there's still some new sounding shit in there. You can probably get it from a blog.

To ask a kind of OT question, is it characteristic for Brazilian LPs from the sixties to have a sleeve that's basically just a 24" by 12" piece of cardboard folded in half around the record, with the front and back cover images being glued on (no spine, no attachment along the top and bottom)? I bought a copy of Nara Leão's Rogerio Duprat album on eBay and was a little surprised to be getting more of a cloak than a jacket around the record.

Helio is a really good piano player and Maucha is good too, she sang with Jobim when she was quite young and I believe is now married to the drummer Duduka da Fonseca. Why? Are they playing near you?

There is good Brazilian guitar player with an English name, Richard Miller, who used to live in DC, I think he was getting a PhD in music education, but now he lives here.

Boogarins, from Brazil, where in the 1960’s psychedelia was also tropicalia, with its rebellious underpinnings. They had the sweet melodic convolutions of tropicalia, some playfully unconventional meters and, at times, some of the modal hypnosis of San Francisco bands like the Jefferson Airplane

I can't find any evidence of a direct influence, but intriguingly, the Azymuth guys turn out to be session players on two albums by "Projecto 3" (which is of course a Portuguese version of the name of Enoch Light's label). Surely a coincidence? The title track seems to me to have been ripped of by Tortoise on 'the Bridge at Iguazu Falls', maybe that title is a hint:
