I'd didn't realize "Cheapskate" was a US only single! Easily the song I heard the most from Money.

da croupier, Sunday, 9 December 2007 23:53 (sixteen years ago) link

I keep hearing "Going Out" when I'm, erm, out. It's very good.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 9 December 2007 23:53 (sixteen years ago) link

"Cheapskate" was evidently they're only charting Modern Rock single here too! I figured "Caught By The Fuzz," "Alright" or "Pumping In Your Stereo" might have made the bottom reaches of that top 40 too, but according to Billboard they didn't.

da croupier, Sunday, 9 December 2007 23:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Gotta go with "Richard III." It drives like a motherfucker, and that's where it's at. But "Fuzz" has a special place in my heart for the brilliant Keith Moon-ness of the drumming.

Voted "Moving", but tend to like their album cuts better. The singles tend to be a bit too fast'n'furious, while Supergrass are better when they show their slower and more reflective side, plus add those wonderful vocal harmonies they are capable of when they want to.

i voted lenny but i love so many of these

mizzell, Monday, 10 December 2007 01:30 (sixteen years ago) link

I thought "Brecon Beacons" was a single. Would have voted for that one.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 10 December 2007 01:54 (sixteen years ago) link

This is probably my favorite band who I own none of their albums.

wanko ergo sum, Monday, 10 December 2007 01:58 (sixteen years ago) link

This is possibly my least favorite band who I own all of their albums. But i still like em ok

electricsound, Monday, 10 December 2007 02:25 (sixteen years ago) link

"Strange Ones" get's my vote.

loved them at the time but now think they are just a good band.

Bee OK, Monday, 10 December 2007 06:28 (sixteen years ago) link

I still love the albums that were really good (they hold up), but the S/T and Road to Rouen have just kind of faded from memory. Looking forward to hearing the new one next spring, though.

Hard to narrow down a favorite single, but "Sun Hits the Sky" wins by a hair.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 10 December 2007 06:52 (sixteen years ago) link

definitely 'caught by the fuzz' for me. first one i ever heard of theirs too. fun, fast and catchy as all hell

i always thought 'mary' was a fantastic single, but the album it appeared on a little underwhelming

Charlie Howard, Monday, 10 December 2007 09:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Caught By The Fuzz is the only I really love. I don't own any of their albums but I've got maybe 5 of the singles - CBTF, Mansize Rooster, Lenny, Going Out, Richard III, Sun Hits The Sky, Moving. OK 7 singles.

Colonel Poo, Monday, 10 December 2007 09:55 (sixteen years ago) link

are you kidding me its pumpin on the stereo
if the q. in the poll is what is the best song ever ever the answer is ibid.

kl0pper, Monday, 10 December 2007 10:17 (sixteen years ago) link

The first two entire albums are full of hits. I would have voted for the title track on In It For the Money, but it's not on this I guess.

Nate Carson, Monday, 10 December 2007 10:59 (sixteen years ago) link

Caught by the fuzz, but could've been any of the singles from the 1st 2 albums.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 10 December 2007 11:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Their debut is overrated, while everything from "Supergrass" onwards is terribly underrated.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 10 December 2007 11:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Caught By The Fuzz was such a mixtape staple for me in high school that I can't really go with anything else (even though I like In It For The Money more than Coco).

I'm in the US so I don't think of Supergrass as a singles band, but I went with "Late In The Day".

Way too much early stuff up there. Supergrass began in 1999. That's when they became a great sophisticated pop band.

Moving came on shuffle today. I actually do find it to be particularly "moving".

It was a Thursday night. I was working late... (dog latin), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 10:10 (twelve years ago) link

I've always found 'Moving' to be a lovely track. I tend to disagree with many people about Supergrass - I know a lot of people tend to cite "I Should Coco" as their best album, but for me they really didn't get going until "In It For The Money". As fun as "I Should Coco" is, I loved it when they started to branch out and move away from that sound. I'd say that "In It For The Money" and "Road To Rouen" are my two favourite albums by that band. There's a musiciality and a sophistication to their work between 1997-2005 that "I Should Coco" just doesn't have.

One thing that is definitely not mentioned whenever Supergrass are talked about is their musicianship - Mick Quinn's bass playing being definitely an underrated factor.

I wasn't really too keen on "Diamond Hoo Ha" though, it seemed more like a retreat rather than a step forward. I would have personally loved for them to build on the sound of "Road To Rouen"!

Turrican, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 14:36 (twelve years ago) link

They never topped "Moving" imo.

Gus Van Sant's Gerry Blank (Eric H.), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 14:37 (twelve years ago) link

I love the bass playing on "Moving", especially when the second verse comes in.

Turrican, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 14:40 (twelve years ago) link

My gf and I saw them at the Elysee Montmartre many years ago. I had and liked 'In it for the Money' but didn't otherwise know much about the band. My gf saw Gaz and said he had to be in the band for there to be so many girls around him. They were excellent live.

"Moving" is a fantastic song, although there are a lot of songs on that album and the next one that I love just as much. They peaked around the turn of the millennium.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 15:04 (twelve years ago) link

I managed to catch them live on two occasions, once in 1999 (prior to the release of the self-titled album), and again in 2003 (after the release of "Life On Other Planets") and both were great gigs.

Especially the former, where they played stuff like 'Far Away', 'Eon', 'Moving'... basically a lot of the strange tracks from the self-titled record that they didn't really play very much afterwards, including a song that they never recorded in the studio called 'Out Of The Blue' - and thankfully no 'Alright' (which has to be their most irritating and unrepresentative song, in my opinion), although they did reluctantly play it at the second gig I went to.

Turrican, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 15:06 (twelve years ago) link

Moving is like Sun hits the Sky, in that it seems clear (to me) that they both are "two songs, cut and shut together".

Moving works just fine, but I always thought "sun hits the sky" to be a bit clunky a fit.

Mark G, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 15:06 (twelve years ago) link

For me:

In It For The Money > Road To Rouen > Life On Other Planets > Supergrass > I Should Coco > Diamond Hoo Ha.

Turrican, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 15:07 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, 'Moving' was two different bits of music put together - I think Gaz was responsible for the verses, and Danny was responsible for the choruses... but I've never really got that impression about 'Sun Hits The Sky'.

The "I am a doctor" bit?

Mark G, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 15:22 (twelve years ago) link

In a way, I can see what you mean, but I've never found it jarring or obvious? I can see what you mean, though.

didn't know this bit of Supergrass trivia, found out about it in a Gaz Coombes interview

re: "Alright"

The success of the record was helped by a lively promotional video directed by Dom and Nic, featuring the band joyfully messing around on bicycles and a bed on wheels at Portmeirion in North Wales.

Having seen the video, Steven Spielberg approached the band and proposed that they work together on a television series in the style of The Monkees.[8] The group turned him down,[8] preferring to work on their second album In It for the Money. Troy Carpenter, co-director of Nude as the News, claims "the gesture says a lot about the band's personality — one which has stuck with the group throughout its career — which is basically that of a fun-loving rock group whose undeniable musical talent is sometimes overshadowed by the sheer ebullience of its music."[9]

Coombes on the brush with Hollywood fame:

It was fun, a huge compliment and very flattering. He's a brilliant guy, and an amazing figure in the history of film but we were just doing our second record and that's what we focussed on. We didn't want to take the fast track to TV. You probably would have found us all face down in a pool at some point!

Agreed, that one's probably my favorite. Maybe licensing issues because it was released as part of some soundtrack?
