Why are the last two albums overlooked?
― The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 22:25 (fifteen years ago) link
well I listed two songs from Breakthrough ("I Found My Everything" is a triumph, especially in the context of her discography), but Growing Pains really isn't up to the standard of her earlier stuff (besides "Hurt Again" which would make my top 20).

yeah "Roses" is amazing ("you suck it up!!"). I should probably revisit Growing Pains, haven't listened to it in a while.

"Roses," "Stay Down" (which almost made my top ten of the year)," and "Fade Away" are damn fine.

It's funny listening to "Roses" after those steroid allegations.
"Fade Away" and "Work in Progress" are great too.

"Fade Away" has one of my favorite Ne-Yo lyrics, and Mary bending her mouth around a couple of polysyllabic words.

"Til the Morning" is the only thing from Growing Pains that really stuck with me. That and the Swizz Beats remix of "Just Fine".

Where is the love for "All That I Can Say"? Man, that's aged beautifully, even if it sounds like a Lauryn Hill demo.

All Lauryn Hill writes sound exactly like Lauryn Hill songs.

What is the source of Puffy's loop for "Be Happy"? It's so perfect. And it fits right in with current crop of slomo house/edits business.

Love and Life is a guilty pleasure of mine. I mean "guilty pleasure" as in "I can't admit to liking this album without getting my butt kicked by Mary J. stans". They just have seething hatred for it and I don't know why.
― I've played polar pool for far too long (MintIce), Monday, 18 October 2010 16:37 (thirteen years ago) link
i don't get it eithercould someone explain it to me?
― The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Monday, 18 October 2010 16:38 (thirteen years ago) link
It's because they had high expectation due to Mary and Puffy working again and they were disappointed. I really don't see what was the big deal. She wasn't depressed like she was during My Life, but they still wanted her to sing about her man doing her wrong and the likes. So called Mary J. stans hate when she is happy and singing more upbeat songs (which was what Puff was doing at the time). They are such manic depressants.
― lilsoulbrother, Monday, 18 October 2010 17:54 (thirteen years ago) link
weird. her happy songs are my favorites. in fact, i wish someone would POX happy beat-heavy mary songs (family affair, etc)
― The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Monday, 18 October 2010 18:04 (thirteen years ago) link
family affair is, like, the apotheosis of happiness. i don't think enough people get that song.
― horseshoe, Monday, 18 October 2010 18:05 (thirteen years ago) link
i do think because the early mary albums were so characterized by pain some people can't deal with the shift.
― horseshoe, Monday, 18 October 2010 18:06 (thirteen years ago) link
they should've paid attention during "real love" then!
