like the single, b-side especially. Also like his remix for the Dondolo single

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 16:06 (seventeen years ago) link

The first two singles were OK, but the Dondolo remix is out of this world. I wish my friends weren't so house-o-phobic so that I could start putting it on mix CDs the way THE LORD ON HIGH INTENDED

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 16:43 (seventeen years ago) link

what is the other of "the first two singles" ... I only know Wrong Galaxy / Triumph 12" and the Dondolo thing (which is awesome, yeah)

his mix here is pretty good too

dmr (Renard), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 17:09 (seventeen years ago) link

the first single was pretty good but it wore out its welcome very quickly

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 17:33 (seventeen years ago) link

there is only one 12" single on DFA and also the Dondolo remix for a song called Dragon, on the label Tiny Sticks (this label is owned by the guy from Mock & Toof, who did a remix for the last Juan Maclean 12"). There WAS a second single but it wore out its welcome so quickly we never released it.

GALKIN (GALKIN), Thursday, 3 August 2006 00:02 (seventeen years ago) link

'dragon' remix so amazing. "rarrrrr!"

HPSTRKRFT (haitch), Thursday, 3 August 2006 00:06 (seventeen years ago) link

I meant first two songs. I tend to be bad at this here typing thingy.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Thursday, 3 August 2006 00:47 (seventeen years ago) link

some of it is ok but overall average and stylistically a mess.

that Dragon remix was really annoying after the 1st listen. except for the Rarrs

Yeah but those rarrrs are to rarrrs what House of Jealous Lovers' cowbell was to cowbells.

So Galkin, anything you can tell us about the stuff mentioned in this month's XLR8R profile? ie Death From Abroad, Shocking Pinks, Prinzhorn Dance School?

Telephonething (Telephonething), Thursday, 3 August 2006 04:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Since I bought the single, I've listened to it once. Reasonably good, if memory serves me correctly...

mikko (mikko), Thursday, 3 August 2006 08:02 (seventeen years ago) link

all shit robot tracks sound ok for home listening, but on the dancefloor, over a big soundsystem, the DESTROY. the dondolo remix is a monster

alex mckee (matagouri), Thursday, 3 August 2006 14:12 (seventeen years ago) link

shit robot is so good. what's the deal with the second single? i heard that Prinzhorn Dance School was signed to DFA, but what those other names?

theghostrobot (theghostrobot), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:26 (seventeen years ago) link

even i was skeptical about shit robot at first, honest, but it is one of those things where they dragged me to a club and played it out and people were applauding and screaming during a song they had never heard before. same with the Dragon remix. i was amazed and a believer. not all dance music can be played at home and we have always straddled a line where we make music that actually works in both places...maybe this one is just for the clubs. who knows. shit robot is marcus lambkin who ran Plant Bar in the east village (RIP), where Luke Jenner bartended and Murphy dj'd, from like 99-2002....great bar.
we are working on the 2nd single in a months time, still letting this one grow a bit. the remix helped it get a second wind.

the new bands are....new. one is from brighton england (prinzhorn) and the other is from christchurch new zealand (shocking pinks). it is not dance music. we should have at least singles out by both bands by the end of the year. shocking pinks album is done but we are waiting a bit, prinzhornh are starting recording this month.

death from abroad will have 2 singles out by years end and full lengths out next year. mostly dance, just for N America. it allows us to get overseas releases out quick here, now that so much dance music distro is shit and there are certain singles we would love to help move along. it aint really a get rich quick scheme, more a way to champion new stuff we love in a more casual, quicker way.

GALKIN (GALKIN), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:42 (seventeen years ago) link

shocking pinks album is done but we are waiting a bit
n1ck'll have written two more albums by then! good for him, tho.

on-topic: "triumph" is "i feel space" on BOOZE.

etc (esskay), Thursday, 3 August 2006 21:07 (seventeen years ago) link

obviously one of the top 10 singles of the year.

JABBA JABBA!! NIB NIB!! (vahid), Thursday, 3 August 2006 21:11 (seventeen years ago) link

the first shocking pinks album we are releasing is a compilation of his first 2 Flying Nun albums. we resequenced, new art, new mastering, 1 brilliant new track....new everything.
we are already working on the next one which will be all new material and get DFA more involved. DFA will also be mixing Prinzhorn Dance School too.

GALKIN (GALKIN), Thursday, 3 August 2006 21:12 (seventeen years ago) link

the first shocking pinks album we are releasing is a compilation of his first 2 Flying Nun albums. we resequenced, new art, new mastering, 1 brilliant new track....new everything.

Is it the entirety of both albums, or a best-of of sorts?

Telephonething (Telephonething), Thursday, 3 August 2006 21:22 (seventeen years ago) link

scott seward on shit robot:

shit robot is a horrible name. it's like giving up on the whole idea of having robot in your name. it's like, why even bother? so lazy. i'll bet that album is really lazy... if you can't have the proper respect for robots, then you shouldn't be making robot music. i am boycotting all future shit robot releases.

pinder (pinder), Thursday, 3 August 2006 21:25 (seventeen years ago) link

telephonething, it is a best-of both albums, resequenced. we will get a press release out soon, single out this year and the cd out early next year....

GALKIN (GALKIN), Friday, 4 August 2006 00:35 (seventeen years ago) link

who is scott seward?

GALKIN (GALKIN), Friday, 4 August 2006 00:39 (seventeen years ago) link

an evil, evil man

CDDB (Dan Deluca), Friday, 4 August 2006 07:03 (seventeen years ago) link

in 3 years of djing at Plant Bar...I only met Marcus once at the very end. Seemed to me it was Dominique who did all the dirty work.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 4 August 2006 11:11 (seventeen years ago) link

ok, maybe "ran" is a strong word, unless we are talking about running it into the ground.

GALKIN (GALKIN), Friday, 4 August 2006 13:58 (seventeen years ago) link

and "bartended" is a strong word for what Luke Jenner did!

OH SNAP!

I'm just keeding, but really, once he made me this drink, he called it the flying saucer. I literally got as drunk as I've ever been and spent the night throwing up, which caused me to get into a fight with my then girlfriend which led to the initial dissolution of that relationship. With the girl, that is, not Luke.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 4 August 2006 14:10 (seventeen years ago) link

if they ever offer you a johnny m*y single stay well away

the 12" was really good. by the third week of may, i was tired of it but kept playing it because it seemed to please people.

i think teh name is awesome.

when i first heard shitrobot on the radio it made think of tangerine dream (esp. strasofear). is this wrong?

Ben H (Ben H), Friday, 4 August 2006 20:21 (seventeen years ago) link

yes, you can only refer to tangerine dream when reviewing delia and gavin.

GALKIN (GALKIN), Friday, 4 August 2006 20:30 (seventeen years ago) link

btw I think it's cool an Irish guy is on DFA, tho interesting Tangerine Dream are brought up, I kinda consider all of DFA prog these days, prog disco but not in the old sense. I don't know if that's a little crazy, just my way of explaining why although I often like the tunes I don't play many DFA releases these days (last one that was big for me were the mixes of "Tito's Way")

that chug chug chug 10 minutes of steadily angrier chugging does not do it for me, I can see how people like it, I play to a crowd with a poor attention span!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 4 August 2006 20:35 (seventeen years ago) link

really dig the single, like his DJ sets, and waiting to hear more from him... and the remix is shit hott

shit robot = pure detroit techno

JABBA JABBA!! NIB NIB!! (vahid), Saturday, 5 August 2006 23:42 (seventeen years ago) link

re shit robot, my moms sez: "this sounds like stuff we used to listen to ... remember a disco song called POPCORN?"

JABBA JABBA!! NIB NIB!! (vahid), Sunday, 6 August 2006 02:09 (seventeen years ago) link

the dondolo remix is not detroit techno!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 6 August 2006 09:11 (seventeen years ago) link

detroit techno? c'mon.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 6 August 2006 20:51 (seventeen years ago) link

it is more Irish 3 step: his LP is called Lord of the Dance.

GALKIN (GALKIN), Sunday, 6 August 2006 21:48 (seventeen years ago) link

he stole that from me.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 6 August 2006 22:07 (seventeen years ago) link

will he ever release a single about "the troubles", like U2 or the Cranberries?

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 6 August 2006 22:07 (seventeen years ago) link

ronan you should do a conceptual "troubles" mix.

HPSTRKRFT (haitch), Monday, 7 August 2006 00:36 (seventeen years ago) link

The original name of the band was Shit O'Robot, but we made him change it because it sounded too "ethnic".

Actually maybe the record should be called "O'Shit" to play up the Irish angle.

GALKIN (GALKIN), Monday, 7 August 2006 00:59 (seventeen years ago) link

i am serious!!!

JABBA JABBA!! NIB NIB!! (vahid), Monday, 7 August 2006 02:27 (seventeen years ago) link

seriously cRaZy!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 7 August 2006 04:11 (seventeen years ago) link

HPSTRKRFT I can imagine a perfect segue from Clannad into a house record.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 7 August 2006 09:37 (seventeen years ago) link

shit robot rocks the same epic orchestral steez as a "strings of life" or "journey of the dragons"

JABBA JABBA!! NIB NIB!! (vahid), Monday, 7 August 2006 19:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Shit Robot reminds me of Heldon. And that is great fucking thing to be reminded of.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 04:54 (seventeen years ago) link

for once i'm with with vahid... pure detroit techno! (ok, with some impure disco or whatevah. but MOSTLY pure.)

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 08:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Mostly pure disco is right. I think that it would make sense to differentiate between Wrong Galaxy and Triumph here, though...Wrong Galaxy is much more along what you're saying, Philip. Triumph is much much too disco to be techno.

trees (treesessplode), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 18:50 (seventeen years ago) link

i can't hear any detroit in it at all.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 18:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Anticipate the LP he's currently working on with James Murphy.

Personally, i can't wait for this...! Due around the same time as the next LCD Soundsystem.

the late great, Friday, 12 September 2014 06:56 (nine years ago) link

haha.

never paid much attention to "shit robot" before, but "ft. lidell townsell" made me perk up.

jaymc, Friday, 12 September 2014 06:57 (nine years ago) link

imo even w lidell factored in it's pretty wack (to say nothing of the remixes) but the old stuff is great

the late great, Friday, 12 September 2014 07:02 (nine years ago) link

the lidell remix is maybe not that bad sound-wise but really really earnest-corny in spirit

six years pass...

found the debut Sh&t Robot/DFA album on cd today for bobbins in a charity shop.
this thread is interesting.
had no idea re the DFA vs ILM thing.
not so sure re the album.
at times it sounds like offcuts from hot chip vs DFA sessions.
but as always with DFA stuff, it will probably take a few more listens and in a couple of months i will be declaring this the best album ever released.
