it can't be as bad as his godawful movies.

Hm. And which movies would those be?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 3 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

All the sudden I remember where I've seen the name Wyndham Earl before.

David Lynch:

movies/TV = good

music = bad (but appropriate within the context of the movies and all, don't get me wrong. Like that severely anemic-looking chick that sang in that bar on Twin Peaks.)

movies bad, tv good, music in both movies and tv very good.

oh come on dude PAINTINGS?

ethan, Sunday, 3 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dude paintings? Paintings of dudes?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 3 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yes! Paintings! Check out "Chicken Kit" which is a raw cut-up chicken mounted on a board with assembly instructions (e.g. "Internal Organs - - Although not seen after completion of your chicken, these are extremely important to its life function. One should not hurry through this somewhat complicated section of the kit.")

I guess the Chicken Kit is not really a painting, though. I also forgot comics -- The Angriest Dog In The World was great (sometimes).

Lynch's paintings fucking rock. as does his music and all of his films except possibly Dune.

Wyndham Earl, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

.. and features him playing the guitar upside down

I'm not being facetious but is he playing the instrument upside down or is he hanging upside down playing the guitar? Sounds interesting whatever.

Freaky Trigger's spiritual godfather Davey Henderson did a fantastic version of In heaven (lady in the radiator song) when he was in Win (as did the Pixies).

And whatever happened to Julee Cruise?

Billy Dods, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Julee Cruise has just released a new album written in collaboration with Kid Congo Powers

no but you've sparked my interest - feel free to tell us how it is! if nothing else i've got some friends who have a "music of twin peaks" cover band who'd probably be v. interested, they like anything lynchian - even if it sucks.

messiahwannabe, Friday, 16 October 2009 09:26 (fourteen years ago) link

I bought a bunch of copies for the stores a couple of weeks ago (it is quite cheap).
Unfortunately, it doesnt sound very good to me: it is overlong and there are a couple of "rock" tracks that are kind of embarrassing, while the more industrial ones are not really exciting.
But it sells well!

Marco Damiani, Friday, 16 October 2009 09:33 (fourteen years ago) link

well, i'm all for david lynch making money - as far as i'm concerned he gets a free pass for life on the strength of twin peaks alone

messiahwannabe, Saturday, 17 October 2009 08:45 (fourteen years ago) link

Surely Bluebob can at least be seen as another entry in the catalogue of Lynch sonic obessions, the problem is its just inferior to the bits he contributed (as "composer" or sound designer) to the Inland Empire, Fire Walks With Me and Eraserhead soundtracks.

Marco Damiani, Saturday, 17 October 2009 09:50 (fourteen years ago) link

perhaps his collaborations and various levels of input on his soundtracks convinced him to try his hand at actually recording out an album, but he just overstepped his limitations a bit in trying? not gonna hold it against him if that's the case. though i may wait till my obsessed friends buy this thing rather than shelling out for it

i heard the lone eno track from dune the other day - it's really beautiful.

eight years pass...

really great track, cut from the same cloth as portishead's vinyl-saturated dusted samples or a darker spin on the kind of feel linkous was going for on "it's a wonderful life" (babies on the sun, title track)

the album dark night of the soul isn't hugely successful, but the deluxe edition includes a beautiful book full of photos from a Lynch exhibit (regular CD includes a condensed version which is still cool)

search: little girl w/julian casablancas, star eyes (with lynch), insane lullaby (james mercer) and the lips track

nina persson track is kinda cool in that it sounds exactly like a sparklehorse song sung by her (moreso than anything he did on the first A Camp record which is totally classic)

destroy: the iggy pop and black francis tracks
