even the best LAP songs aren't

Which is a pity if you think about good lap songs and their contexts.

And I've heard some good lap songs in my time.

*rim shot*

Suffice to say you are so perfectly *right* about "Like a Prayer" (the song, as I'm less familiar with the album) that it almost ends all debate. In retrospect, the whole 89 to 92 time period intrigues me in that it seems almost out of time rather than of it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 October 2005 22:52 (eighteen years ago) link

In retrospect, the whole 89 to 92 time period intrigues me in that it seems almost out of time rather than of it.

And it's the time when so many impossible, hopeless claims were made about Madonna (Paglia, et al) that "Like A Prayer" stands as a jump-the-shark moment. She would go on to make several great singles and some very good albums, but her Relevance As Cultural Force vanished, anan artist/multimedia phenom like Madonna (like Bowie) requires the projections of fans and crtics in order to keep her engines stoked.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Saturday, 22 October 2005 23:00 (eighteen years ago) link

The Bowie comparison is apt and almost a commonplace now, but you can argue, I think, that the key difference between them is that Bowie was always a liminal figure for most of his career (in the US at least, likely less so in the UK) where Madonna *was* pop, front and center and therefore inescapable to a large degree. My own feelings was that it was surprisingly easy for me to let go of Madonna-as-tracking-presence after the early nineties, and that whatever chart etc. marks made since then made me think 'well, yeah, of course' rather than to think 'gosh isn't it amazing how relevant and forward thinking and etc. she still is' -- which is part of what can also kill the mystique.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 October 2005 23:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Bowie and Madonna at this point in their careers are largely take-it-or-leave-it. I'll still run out to buy Reality and American Life but it's largely due to longstanding fandom. Madonna may have the edge in that if I hear and love a new single (which, as you admit, Ned, is much easier since Madonna is a pop star first and foremost) I'll run a little faster.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Saturday, 22 October 2005 23:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Who needs to run when you can download? ;-)

As for the larger questions here, Tim Finney, O'so/Nicole and Ally to thread!

"Like a Prayer" is her best album, "Erotica" is her worst.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 22 October 2005 23:34 (eighteen years ago) link

I listen to "Like A Prayer" and wonder why so many people think the name listed as co-producer and co-writer had no input

that's kind of the story of her career, isn't it? she had a decade-plus run in which she seemed to release albums and singles nearly nonstop (she was way more prolific than the average superstar), and the quality almost never flagged. she managed this with a revolving door of collaborators, and just about the only thing that connects the dots through her catalog is her own credit. i don't recall patrick leonard doing anything with any other artist. i don't recall shep pettibone continuing to write, or co-write, great songs after he and madge split. and yet the men get all the credit.

sexism blah blah blah. anti-popism blah blah blah. i've always assumed there was something more to it than easy answers like that, but i could never put my finger on it. though maybe it has something to do with my own reaction to the way she's always presented herself in public, to her almost pathologically cold, stiff persona. i can't stand her. love her records, though. and admire the hell out of her work ethic and consistency. and think she's a hell of a songwriter.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Saturday, 22 October 2005 23:37 (eighteen years ago) link

both damn good albums, though i've always had a soft spot for the great half of true blue and the great three-fifths of like a prayer where she perfected her old-school pop voice before she started going new-school on us.

fave song on like a prayer: "dear jessie."

fact checking cuz (fcc), Saturday, 22 October 2005 23:39 (eighteen years ago) link

But the "Like A Prayer" single/video (can you separate the two?) is just...is there any other song in rock which constructs an analogy between sex and religion so vulgarly, so campily, so purple?

Madonna = not rock.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 23 October 2005 11:54 (eighteen years ago) link

Like A Prayer is a v. good album (alfred OTM wrt "Till Death Do Us Part") but it can't really compete with Erotica.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 23 October 2005 12:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Erotica is the pinnacle of Madonna's career in terms of full lengths, I think.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 23 October 2005 15:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 6 April 2007 00:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Odd, I thought people didn't really like Erotica. I certaily didn't think it was the pinnacle of her career, in public opinion.

I don't love the album, but I certainly don't dislike it. I think it's really a mood question. Very different moods. But based on overall quality, I'm definitely for Like A Prayer. Act of Contrition, Love Song, Till Death Do Us Part, Oh Father, Express Yourself, Like A Prayer - all just kindof astounding.

Some of the production on Erotica is TOO noisy for me, kind of like how Tori's From The Choirgirl feels by the end. Too many synth stabs or something. And some of the songwriting doesn't settle right with me, like Bad Girl? I just don't know about that. I mean it's funny at least.

No I could never call Erotica the pinnacle of Mad's career, not beside ablums like True Blue, Like a Prayer, Like a Virgin, Bedtime Stories and Confessions. Those have all influenced me way more.

Surmounter, Friday, 6 April 2007 12:18 (seventeen years ago) link

The best Madonna album vs. the worst? No match.

"Like a Prayer" is a great collection of beautiful songs, including her 3 best ever ballads, whilst "Erotica" is almost unlistenable and the worst rubbish she has ever come up with.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 6 April 2007 15:10 (seventeen years ago) link

From what I know about Erotica I couldn't possibly care less about it. Like A Prayer, though is one of my fave and most memorable songs of hers.

I seem to be on a bit of a Madonna trip at the moment, starting with her first album...now I'm looking forward to hearing the Like A Virgin album in its entirety for the first time...I hate "Material Girl" and the title track, but have very good memories of "Angel" and "Dress You Up".

But no, Alfred, she isn't better than Kate Bush, and you won't catch me in a dark alley saying so, so watch your mouth on the Aerial thread.

Bimble, Saturday, 7 April 2007 04:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Also Lily Allen is miles better than Madonna.

Bimble, Saturday, 7 April 2007 08:23 (seventeen years ago) link

I think the odd thing about Geir's opposition is that Like A Prayer and Erotica probably resemble eachother as much as either of them resemble any other of Madonna's albums. There's often a sleazier vibe to both the house beats and Madonna's vocals on the latter album, but otherwise I'm not quite sure why someone would like "Love Song" but not "Waiting", or "Keep It Together" but not "Why's It So Hard", or "Spanish Eyes" but not "In This Life", or "Til Death Do Us Part" but not "Words".

Tim F, Saturday, 7 April 2007 08:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I see your point but I think the LAP songwriting is much better, and the production is smarter. It's like comparing Club Monaco to Hot Topic, in terms of production. I know that's random, I just woke up. Love Song is tooo classic to compare to anything on Erotica. Spanish Eyes is awesome songwriting - In This Life is stodgier, cornier.

I don't know, you and Alfred are clearly popists. No?

Like a Virgin is one of my fav Mad albums - the title track and Material Girl are so good, Bimble! Dress You Up rules too. As for Lily Allen, I've only heard 2 songs and all I can say is she's different (than Madonna). But I wouldn't say she's better, cuz she's just going for something so different, even though they're both "pop." I don't think we should lump it all into the same compare-these-to-each-other category.

Surmounter, Saturday, 7 April 2007 13:16 (seventeen years ago) link

lol "clearly popists" = outed!

Like A Virgin's second half is the weakest of her career.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 7 April 2007 13:29 (seventeen years ago) link

lol

i kinda like the 2nd half, it's kooky and fun. and Love Don't Live Here Anymore is so great!

Surmounter, Saturday, 7 April 2007 13:36 (seventeen years ago) link

"Spanish Eyes" is surely cheesier than "In This Life", her ragged vocals in the chorus sound rather drag queen.

Tim F, Saturday, 7 April 2007 14:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Tim, are you Tim Finney or someone else?

Bimble, Saturday, 7 April 2007 14:37 (seventeen years ago) link

i know but i feel it's endearing cheesy and not cliche cheesy

Surmounter, Saturday, 7 April 2007 14:47 (seventeen years ago) link

But "In This Life" has so much dissonance -- those synth block chords, the classical swirls, the minor chords played on the keyboard -- that it reenforces the declarative force of her lyrics.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 7 April 2007 15:01 (seventeen years ago) link

ugh i'd listen to it now but i left it at work.

Surmounter, Saturday, 7 April 2007 15:03 (seventeen years ago) link

I think the odd thing about Geir's opposition is that Like A Prayer and Erotica probably resemble eachother as much as either of them resemble any other of Madonna's albums.

"Like a Prayer" is the most melodic and least dance-oriented Madonna album. "Erotica" is the opposite, with particularly the title track being the worst thing she has ever made.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 7 April 2007 16:20 (seventeen years ago) link

""Like a Prayer" is the... least dance-oriented Madonna album."

Probably the worst thing about it. But anyway let's talk about Madonna's albums as they actually are rather than simply resort to vague received wisdom. Surely her first and last albums are both significantly more dance oriented than Erotica, which I count as having only 4 club-tempo numbers ("Fever", "Deeper & Deeper", "Thief of Hearts" and "Words"; "Why's It So Hard" could possibly work at more laidback nights).

Which means it's about on par with Ray of Light and Music (and one suspects that the latter would have more club numbers if it had more than 10 tracks).

Tim F, Saturday, 7 April 2007 17:04 (seventeen years ago) link

BTW Bimble yes I am Tim Finney

Tim F, Saturday, 7 April 2007 17:04 (seventeen years ago) link

i have no idea what to say about Erotica, the song. it baffles me.

though I think Like A Prayer ventures into quaint territory, I don't know that the WORST thing about it is that it's not very dance-oriented.

Surmounter, Saturday, 7 April 2007 17:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Surely her first and last albums are both significantly more dance oriented than Erotica

Dunno. "Erotica" last for almost 80 minutes and contains various styles and genres, but the most well-known tracks (and also the ones championed by ILM's most typical dance-fans) are very much dance-oriented.

Yes, the debut and some of her most recent ones are also rather danceable. But they do also contain tunes. Proper good-old-fashioned tunes with verse and chorus at all. Not rapping or talking instead, like on "Erotica" (and "Justify My Love" - those two tuneless and absolutely unlistenable "songs" are the worst Madonna tracks ever!)

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 7 April 2007 18:09 (seventeen years ago) link

see i really like justify my love, but i used to dislike it when i was younger. now i feel like it could be considered a weird sortof sister song to Love Song. they're both minimalist, justify my love is just minimalist in a more obvious way.

Surmounter, Saturday, 7 April 2007 18:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Minimalism is never a good idea. Maximalism forever!

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 7 April 2007 18:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Plus, btw. mind you, just because I like "Like a Prayer" doesn't necessarily mean I like "This Is Not a Lovesong", which may be the most atypical song on that album. I love "Like a Prayer" first and foremost for "Spanish Eyes", "Dear Jessie", "Oh Father" and "Promise To Try".

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 7 April 2007 18:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Love Song and Act of Contrition are highlights for me. Dear Jessie is hilarious.

Surmounter, Saturday, 7 April 2007 18:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Is there some correlation between the fact that I've been listening to Fleetwood Mac's Tusk album lately and this album shares two song titles with Madonna's Like A Virgin album? "Over and Over" and "Angel".

Bimble, Sunday, 8 April 2007 04:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, what if Madonna got together with Throbbing Gristle? That would be great. Just kidding. I think.

Bimble, Sunday, 8 April 2007 04:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Like A Virgin album turned out to be a big fat dud, aside from Into The Groove, Dress You Up, and Love Don't Live Here Anymore. Also I find I can't bear to listen to the song Like A Prayer. It's not 1989 anymore, folks. And I'm not in a club.

Bimble, Sunday, 8 April 2007 22:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Geir's willingness to jumble up the same four or five words and apply them to Erotica over the span of decades is admirable.

Geir's willingness to address one of the best crossover examples of what must be his least favorite style of music is not.

"Material Girl" is the best thing about that album. Pointing forward to the not single-minded Madonna of the "Like a Prayer" album, being able to do other genres than just dance.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 8 April 2007 23:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Too bad "Crazy For You" wasn't on the "Like a Virgin" album though. Would have been a perfect closing track.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 8 April 2007 23:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Eric H., Monday, 9 April 2007 00:06 (seventeen years ago) link

This negates any credit you get for defending Kate Bush.

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 9 April 2007 00:12 (seventeen years ago) link

I love Material Girl. And I don't think there's anything wrong with sounding 80s! Like a Prayer is really special cuz of its melody, and cuz of its vocal textures.

Like a Virgin is such a fun album! even the second half, though not exactly memorable, is really fun to listen to for me. I looove the thick 'n rich 80s sound the whole thing is infused with. Like a Virgin, the track, is especially wonderful, as is Love Don't Live Here Anymore.

I don't think any of Madonna's albums are particularly well-remembered by people generally, outside of the singles - Matt do "the people" whose opinion you want to put forward here remember any tracks from Like A Virgin outside its two big hits (and "Angel" at a stretch)? Like A Virgin is possibly Madonna's least talked-about album-qua-album.

Like A Prayer probably would rate best in terms of "songs people remember" but only because, like, over half the tracks were released as singles and all had reasonably strong promo push.

But in general what "the people" remember is The Immaculate Collection.

Tim F, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 22:40 (fourteen years ago) link

Anyway you should go and listen to Erotica, it's fantastic. A bit sad though: a friend pointed out to me recently that "Words" has really good lyrics, and I immediately thought to myself "yeah I like it too, but isn't that supposed to be the worst song on the album lyrically?", and then I realised she was comparing it to recent Madonna lyrics.

surely people remember true blue as an album, given how many of its songs were singles? and standards, at that.

always got the impression that like a prayer was the consensus ::canon:: favourite, with a smaller but significant minority of critics/fans (most of whom are pretty hardcore madonna fans) repping for erotica.

"Keep It Together" rules

CEO Greedwagon (Neanderthal), Monday, 8 April 2024 21:35 (two weeks ago) link

going to guess DJP went apoplectic when he read this in the Pitchfork review re: Express Yourself:

Though it’s worth noting that the version on Like a Prayer sounds anemic compared to the utterly superior Shep Pettibone single remix, which foregrounds the cowbell and makes the bouncing-ball bassline a go-on-girl counterpoint to Madonna’s message.

CEO Greedwagon (Neanderthal), Monday, 8 April 2024 21:37 (two weeks ago) link

Re: "Express Yourself," I got confused by which mix is which - fortunately I found this handy post from another forum:

There is always so much confusion over the different mixes of the "Express Yourself" single and video. I'll try to explain...

First I'll start with the US promo CD. It has four tracks on it:

1. (7" Remix) 4:30
2. (Remix/Edit) 4:50
3. (Non-Stop Express Mix) 7:54
4. (Local Mix) 6:20

7" Remix is the version that was released on 7" vinyl and cassette single in the US. It sounds similar to the Like A Prayer album version, but was remixed by Shep Pettibone and includes more overdubs of synths, horns and string sections.

Remix/Edit is Shep Pettibone's dance remix of the song which is a totally reworked house version (some of the same synth & string parts that were added to his 7" Remix are also included in this mix.

Non-Stop Express Mix is Shep Pettibone's extended dance version of his (Remix/Edit).

and Local Mix is Shep's extended remix version of his 7" Remix.

A dub version of his dance remix version was also released on the "Express Yourself" 12" single, Stop & Go Dubs 10:50, but it wasn't included on the promo CD.

As for the video, there were two mixes released. Version 1 uses (Remix/Edit) as the soundtrack, but the intro is replaced with the intro from the Local Mix but with additional echo added to the line "do you believe love." Version 2 uses 7" Remix as the soundtrack, and the intro is also replaced with the intro from the Local Mix, but this time they left the audio as it appears on the Local Mix, without additional echo on the line "do you believe in love," and since the 7" Remix is shorter and fades out, the second video ends earlier with the soundtrack cutting to the ending from the Local Mix of the song.

Version 1 was officially released on the Celebration DVD and Version 2 was officially released on The Immaculate Collection VHS and DVD.

In 1990, Shep Pettibone remixed the song again (based off of his dance remix version) for The Immaculate Collection album. The new 4:02 Q-Sound version appears on the album and also on the B-side of the "Justify My Love" single. He also made an extended 9:30 Q-Sound version called "Express Yourself (Shep's 'Spressin' Himself Re-Remix)" which appears on the "Justify My Love" maxi-single.

Then in 2009, another version was released on her Celebration compilation album. This 4:00 version is basically an attempt to recreate the 1990 Immaculate Collection length edit, but using the (Local Mix) intro and the Remix/Edit. It's missing the additional echo on "do you believe in love" so it does not include the same audio as the Version 1 video which means you can only get that intro on the Celebration DVD.

And I called it an "attempt" to recreate The Immaculate Collection edit, cuz after the 3rd chorus they end up cutting further than they should to the wrong part of the song (they cut to the second time she sings "and when you're gone he might regret it," instead of the first time she sings it) and then they give up editing the rest of the song cuz it ends up being 4:00 after their strange edit.

I never ever heard the album version when it became a radio hit. And the single version rules.

...of "Keep It Together," that is.
