Is Lift Every Voice and Sing the same song as on Wattstax, sung by Sister Kim Weston, I think? Was it a Wattstax special composition, or an old favourite?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 12:49 (eighteen years ago) link

An old favourite! Also covered by Shooby Taylor!

I just flippantly commented recently that it might be time they returned to do something reflecting whatever political concerns they might have in 2005. Weird. The tracklisting still looks potentially interesting as fodder for subversion, no?

Oh yeah, I was wondering how this is. I saw it in the record store the other day, but I got distracted by looking at that new Herbie Hancock cd.

I had to review it for Jazziz. It's okay - it feels much more like a Haden album than a Liberation Music Orchestra album (less blare, more stately and dignified beauty with a dash of restrained melancholy). The version of "This Is Not America" is really good, though there's a weird moment where the band throws in a snippet of "Shall We Gather At The River." That kinda threw me off, because this is an album that's all about standing up to cruel power, and "Shall We Gather" is indelibly associated in my mind with the slaughter of the Temperance League in The Wild Bunch. I doubt that's what Bley and Haden had in mind.

Hmm. It gets a UK release on 19 September so I'll probably just wait for that.

Amazon users rate this highly. ILXor thoughts? Been listening again to "Ballad of the Fallen" and being enamored.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce that Charlie Haden, born August 6, 1937 in Shenandoah, Iowa, passed away today at 10:11 Pacific time in Los Angeles after a prolonged illness. Ruth Cameron, his wife of 30 years, and his children Josh Haden, Tanya Haden, Rachel Haden and Petra Haden were all by his side.

Aw, damn, I was listening to him just a few nights ago. RIP

RIP - that hank jones record he did a couple years ago was great, as was his Keith Jarrett duet album.

tylerw, Friday, 11 July 2014 21:58 (nine years ago) link

RIP - I haven't heard enough of his more recent work, but the early Ornette albums and the first Liberation Music Orchestra album are still radical and indelible.

sentimental favorite ... weird track, not the best showcase of his skills. i like it because i used to have my alarm clock set to jazz radio and i woke up to this track one morning, it was magical.

i wasn't really conscious until the "sextant"-sounding part about 6 minutes in and i thought i was still dreaming because it was so weird

So glad that he lived to hear the album recently released by his daughters.

I dunno. (amateurist), Saturday, 12 July 2014 00:35 (nine years ago) link

To me he could do no wrong, never played a note he didn't mean, always had great collaborators and interesting things to say about other musicians, great family man, no false humility, no bluster, no jive, just a great tone and great music. Beautiful deep cat and I am very sad that I will never get to go to another one of his gigs, and didn't go to enough of them when he was here.

I feel so glad I got to interview him in person once (in '97; he was promoting Beyond the Missouri Sky, an album of duets with Pat Metheny). Seriously one of the calmest, most centered, kindest people I've ever met. Reminded me of my favorite Jesuit priest from the two years I spent in Catholic school. I only saw him play live twice—once with the Quartet West, that same year, and then again in 2003 at a NYC jazz festival; his group was on the same bill as Ornette Coleman's group, but they never took the stage together, unfortunately.

that metheny album is actually pretty nice.
there's an interview clip w/ haden (which i think appears in the ken burns jazz thing, maybe elsewhere) where he describes his first day with ornette and it's like it was a religious experience (he might even use those words i can't remember). it's just a good reminder that behind the genius of a guy like ornette, you need to have someone there at the very beginning who is just a complete true believer. a disciple if you want to get religious about it. like, there are lots of easier paths to go down if you want to be a musician than to align yourself with someone like ornette coleman. but haden seems to have done it with complete trust.
