Not popular is our Michael. I tried to post to this thread eight hours ago, got kicked off by Freeserve and really expected to see a flurry of smart responses by now...

I like Hybrid (EG, 1985-ish) and the track on Cobalt Blue (4AD, 1992) with the Eno string arrangement. That is all.

The live album done for the release of Cobalt Blue is very nice, I have to say. I still don't actually have Cobalt Blue itself!

Definitely "Sleeps with the Fishes" -- his collaboration with Xymox guru Pieter Nooten. Haunting, bubbling perfection. "Cobalt Blue" is quite "intrifuing" as well, but it's more tame than the sinister magic of "Sleeps with the Fishes."

Oh yes - forgot about Sleeps With The Fishes. In fact, counting collaborations, I realise I've rather too many Brook records. He gets special praise for producing Mary Margaret O'Hara's peerless Miss America.

Deserves to be flayed alive for his treatment of Djivan Gasparian on that Real World album

And I love that blue sleeve on the inside...it's hard to believe I once had it on vinyl.

I just picked up a used vinyl copy of Hybrid, from 1985. It's gorgeous, very reminiscent of Eno's Ambient 4: On Land, that same "we are in the tranquil burbling outdoors but mild dangers lurk" vibe. Fun fact: Brook invented the "Infinite Guitar" which Edge famously used on "With or Without You"...

Not only that, he is credited as the inventor in the "Joshua Tree" liner notes!

I'd totally lost track of this guy, a pretty important ambient linchpin. Looks like he focuses exclusively on TV/film scores these days?

Cobalt Blue and Live at the Aquarium still sound pretty great! The studio album has a mannered quality like it's a museum exhibition, used to put me off a little but now I love it because I haven't really heard anything else like it in my wanderings.

Oh yeah, don't miss his soundtrack album for the Captive made with the Edge (and one song with vocals by Sinead O'Connor), it's great!

iirc that was Sinead's recorded debut.

Oh yeah, his web site has something like two dozen albums' worth of home-recorded stuff available for free download

Big fan of Hybrid - maybe the most overlooked Eno-related project from his imperial phase? Feels due the deluxe reissue/lost masterpiece critical reappraisal treatment.

xpost Have you listened to any? Any suggestions of where to start?
