I think the earliest recordings are Joseph Taylor singing in 1907? Don't know if it's available on CD tho.

There's a good collection of early Copper Family recordings on Topic that has 'The Lark in the Morning' and stuff like that on it. Think it's 50s & early 60s stuff.

I'm sure that a lot of the field recordings that Alan Lomax did would be worth investigating too (sorry, don't know as much about this as I'd like to!).

Also lots of those "themed" albums that were originally done by Ewan MacColl for the BBC in the 50s, I believe they're available. Topic is probably the best bet for this sorta thing.

PS: I am selling that Copper Family thing on Amazon, only without the bizarre case (which broke). It's good, but I listen to it only rarely.
