I dig Gryphon, especially "Red Queen to the Gryphon Three." That's a pretty bad ass mix of medieval polyphony and rock. Good stuff.

Gentle giant is more eclectic and hard rocking. Gryphon is more folky, less eclectic, and considerably less hardrocking. If you took a "medieval" break out of a Gentle Giant song and extended it into a full lenght song you'd have something similar to Gryphon. Early Gryphon is almost exclusively in a medieval/renaissance/early baroque vein but with some rock bombast. "Red Queen to the Gryphon Three" is a more pronounced fusion and entirely instrumental. The stuff thereafter is more conventionally pop.

Yes Red Queen to Gryphon Three is really good. It's like a rock symphony with four movements, and is somewhat programmatic.

Midnight Mushrumps is my favorite; They should never have allowed singing. Red Queen To Gryphon Three is the only one that received a proper issue in the US (on an LP); all 4 proper Gryphon albums were licensed in Japan, and sound great. There is also at least one Richard Harbey solo LP! More Crumhorn! Not really comparable to GG, IMHO. For fans of Tom Newman's Faerie Symphony...and some Mike Oldfield albums.

I remember seeing Gryphon on Magpie. Come to think of it, I also remember seeing XTC on Magpie (Autumn 77, doing "Science Friction").

Never heard Gryphon and I'm not entirely sure I'd like them, but Graeme Taylor is on the first few Albion Band records which are right nice in places. Was he in Spriguns of Tolgus too perhaps?

Plenty of luv for GRYPHON here, obv. I like "Red Queen to Gryphon Three" best, it's always a pleasure to sit & listen to all the little parts weaving in and out of one another. It is one of my favourite albums ever. I don't much care for "Treason", but I like the other stuff, incl Richard Harvey's library music albums just fine.

I'm currently in love with Red Queen To Gryphon Three and Midnight Mushrumps, they've just been reissued here actually. AND it seems they've reformed! Gryphon and Comus reformations in the same year - Gentle Giant next? Doubtful.

Righto I've now seen both Gryphon and Gentle Giant (well, 3 of them playing under the name of Three Friends) playing amazing shows this year. Comus next weekend but it seems you have to buy a weekend ticket for £80 or something, so no.

I know no-one cares about Gryphon here apart from me, but anyway someone told me mainman Richard Harvey wrote the theme music for Gerry Anderson's 1980's attempt to recreate past glories, Terrahawks. And it's true!
