The Time was actually THERE, having just performed in the live performance space at BAM, and strolled in, sans Morris Day, to introduce Purple Rain.

They guy who played Jerome seemed to be particularly het up about something on the prince.org messageboards, and kept circling back to some unspecified beef, all while protesting that he really didn't care that much. ???

When the lights went down, and the blurry Warner Bros logo fetched up there on the screen, all of us, from the knots of white kids at the edges, to the rows of fan club members that had claimed the middle seats early, shouted "turn it up!!! turn up the god damn music!!!" everyone shoutin and singin along to every song. All of it, to me, a revelation all over again. How lucky we are to have this document of arguably the height of a very great musician's powers, at the height of his approbation. In the movie theater, it feels a little like being there for a concert. I sat next to a fan club girl who literally knew every single line, and would say it just BEFORE it happened in the movie. i.e. "I gave Jerome the night off"

The PR remaster itself is way hotter than the HDTracks which is the best digital version IMHO. The og US vinyl is wonderful - still.

i keep both the HDTracks and the original CD on my MP3 player. Had a downloaded vinyl rip that sounded great but there were skips so fuck that obv.

Needless to say I will be buying the shit out of the new release even if not for the remaster of the album proper

Don't think I've heard PR all the way for nearly 30 years...massive Prince head but I dunno...obviously great but apart from 'When Doves Cry' it doesn't particularly feed my Prince Jones...iforgot how full on it is...it still feels like the outlier in his early catalogue...and the song PR is a fucking dirge...looking forward to listening to unreleased stuff...what I've heard of it so far is amazing

I love Purple Rain but agree that it sticks out like a sore thumb in Prince's discography - Prince never really went for mass appeal on that scale again - not even with high profile projects like Batman.

He tried again with "Diamonds & Pearls" which was a pretty slick and commercial production compared to what came before. "Batman" , "Graffiti Bridge" sounded positively claustrophobic and weird compared to stuff like "Cream".

I also never had the love for PR (really never cared for the title tune either) but "When Doves Cry" and "The Beautiful Ones" are sublime.

giving it a first listen, holy fuck "love and sex". i may not actually be alive by the end of the 10 minute "we can fuck", just giving y'all that warning up front. if i never post again this shit is so good it literally killed me.

Diamonds & Pearls was totally a calculated "comeback" album p much the only time he specially seemed to be trying to move units. Was super popular then pretty much forgotten it seems, though the holographic CD cover must've cut into the profit margin

i think this "we can fuck" is the full-length version of the fragment on disc 4 of "work it 2.0" only in much much superior sound quality. fuck, that bridge, it's goddamn zeuhl and there isn't even any bass on this version.

Diamonds & Pearls still felt smaller in scale than Purple Rain, though.

We need to look a bit at the wider picture here too -- granted it's the jewel in the crown of the Warner years in terms of money so of course it would get the primary reissue. Even so, we ended up with a three CD/one DVD package for $25 (which puts a LOT of those super deluxe editions to shame right there), the outtakes were remastered by the guy who did the original mastering for the album to start with, Bernie Grundman, and -- something I haven't seen many people talk about! -- stellar liner notes. You've got Susan Rogers doing the main essay, plus a song by song breakdown of the main album by all the members of the Revolution, not to mention a quick note from his tour photographer from the time along with some archival photos. I mean, not to put too fine a point on it, but if they could maintain this general model for the rest of the reissues, especially the 70s/80s years -- and there's no reason why said model wouldn't work (album/outtakes disc/single and extended edits/video or concert film) -- then goddamn.

So much to love in 4.0 and so much to mourn re: his massive drop in quality/inspiration in '90s once you get to the later 5.0 discs :(((

BUT the versions of Cross The Line plus the versions of Positivity, Vicky Waiting etc more than make up for all that mess imo.

You're welcome. There's a few repeats of old chestnuts like the Family demos (Mutiny, etc) in slightly better quality than usual but stuff like "Nothing", "Yo Mister" and the Lovesexy demos are incredible finds.
