El Janko (JasonD), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:01 (nineteen years ago) link

When you start talking "all time" (and "quick"), I can't help giving some to the canon.

Superchunk - "Slack Motherfucker"
Sonic Youth - "The Diamond Sea"
Jimi Hendrix - "Purple Haze"
Led Zeppelin - "Stairway to Heaven"
Radiohead - "Idioteque"

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:05 (nineteen years ago) link

uh, yeah, the roches is "hammond song" and the marvin gaye is "third world girl"

El Janko (JasonD), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:05 (nineteen years ago) link

"Melissa" is awesome though.

xpost

Daydream Nation is an album BTW. I'm really curious which song you picked from it, not just being a pedant.

xxxpost sundar: Oh wow, you're right. I was thinking "Teenage Riot" when I wrote Daydream Nation and it's funny how the album title is synonymous in my head with THAT song. Truth is my first thought was "Candle" because I LOVE the guitar playing in that song, but I thought, do I REALLY love the song? So yeah, you could say "Candle" for me too is pretty high up.

PiersT, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:14 (nineteen years ago) link

There's no way I can do this without changing my mind the moment I hit "submit". But here goes:

Drugstore -- Accelerate
Depeche Mode -- Enjoy the Silence
Kim Carnes -- Bette Davis Eyes
James -- Laid
Joy Division -- Love Will Tear Us Apart

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah tell me about it. Everybody's picks are flooring me. I mean "In Dreams" and "Be My Baby" are untouchable.

PiersT, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:15 (nineteen years ago) link

New Order, "Ceremony"
Pavement, "Zurich is Stained"
Stone Roses, "I Wanna Be Adored"
Blondie, "Heart of Glass"
Joy Division, "Love Will Tear Us Apart"

that doesn't seem right, though.

(ten years from now, i would have said Yeah Yeah Yeahs, "Maps"... but, you know, it's too soon)

poortheatre (poortheatre), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:18 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, JaX0N/Janko's McCrae "I Get Lifted" actually makes me realize that "Rock Your Baby" should by all rights be on MY top 5. Because it IS one of my top 5. but Roger wouldn't let me consult my record collection, so here we are...

So far, only "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "In Dreams" have been named more than once.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 08:55 (nineteen years ago) link

That Jackson 5 song came up a couple times.

I was taking "song" literally, not counting instrumentals (though "The Diamond Sea" may be a half-cheat). My list would be very different otherwise.

"Zoo Music Girl" rules. I should pull out the Birthday Party more often.

I think "Warsaw" may be my favourite Joy Division song. Otherwise, "Shadowplay", possibly.

I am taking out Aphex and replacing it with My Cherie Amour by Stevie Wonder.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 09:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I am also going to pick SIX because I don't want to live in a world where Don't Dream It's Over by Crowded House is not in my top FIVE.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 09:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name
Neil Young - Cortez the Killer
Rolling Stones - Rocks Off
Oasis - Wonderwall
T-Rex - Get it On
Black Sabbath - Planet Caravan
Talking Heads - Life During Wartime

If Disco Nihilist gets to pick SIX, I think it'd be only fair that someone who ISN'T a Nihlist and holds that all values are NOT baseless and that ideas and facts can indeed be known or communicated, pics SEVEN!

King Crimson - Islands

This is a beautiful melody, which used to float through my head often.

Thanks! I thought this was the most unusual pick in my selection, given that somehow most KC fans don't think much of the entire Islands album. A couple of years ago, the song made their way onto their setlists (I think thanks to current singer Jakko Jakszyk). I still can't believe that I heard it live last year.

Valentijn, Wednesday, 14 August 2019 18:05 (four years ago) link

Islands is great and among my favourite KC albums.

They're not engraving the 5 on your tombstone, it's just an internet message board! I just picked 5 off the top of my head, from different eras of my listening life, that I thought had a great combination of melody and lyric. I could pick another 50, the list is not definitive.

Paul Simon - The Coast
King Crimson - Islands

Will probably be flagellating myself in a bit for not including anything by Roxy Music, David Bowie or Gene Clark.

― Valentijn

AARGH! Sometimes I shouldn't post here while I should be working instead. I just realised that I managed to make an error in one of my supposedly-five-favourite-songs-of-all-times picks. It's as if my brain did some sort of erroneous auto-correct after typing 'the Co':
The Paul Simon selection should be 'The Cool, Cool River'
While I do like The Coast, there's five or six songs from the Rhythm Of The Saints album that I would rank above it. Over the last few years, I got increasingly fascinated with The Cool, Cool River.
