Subtle "A New White" - better than what's come before it?

artdamages (artdamages), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 05:56 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm surprised it didn't make any end of the year lists. this album is probably doseone's best project yet.

bad news: "So, some pretty awful news. This morning around 3am, the Subtle tour van hit a patch of black ice outside of Des Moines. The van and the trailer are totally demolished. Everyone in the band was relatively ok (cuts, scratches, maybe the odd broken bone), except for Dax. He was airlifted to a hospital in Omaha, where they found out that his 5th vertebrae is shattered. The doctors there say that some degree of paralysis is inevitable, but they can't tell yet if it will be neck down, waist down, temporary, permanent, etc. Dax will be in the hospital in Omaha for at least 3 weeks." (from the kork agency)

I am so saddened to hear of the accident and subsequent injury sustained by Dax. This is just so "not fair" for a band and a good person in his prime, and just getting a much deserved creative life.
I've known Dax professionally and personally for quite a number of years (we worked together) and he is just the last person any of this should happen to. Please keep positive thoughts for his complete recovery.

Oh shit this is awful news. I used to work with Dax (and most of the other Subtle guys) at Amoeba and Dax made a big influence on my listening habits. The guy is such a sweetheart, this really sucks.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 26 February 2005 16:42 (nineteen years ago) link

he really is one of the coolest guys anyone could meet and I'm still getting my head around the fact this has happened.

the album is a grower. they save their strongest tracks for the end.

best and thoughts to dax.

what did dax play in subtle?

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 27 February 2005 00:29 (nineteen years ago) link

I stopped by Amoeba yesterday, in Berkeley. They have a list to sign if you would like to be kept posted on Dax's progress. Just talk to the guys at the counter. There is also an address for the hospital he is staying at to send cards. I don't want to give too much info here, but if you want to keep up, stop by the store.

They might try to organize a benefit or two on his behalf. I offered ticketing services if they use a venue that I deal with.

It seems he is going to have a long road ahead. FYI, Dax played keys, samples, and melodica on the album. He was also part of Themselves (on Anticon) and has worked on other collaborative projects with Winidred E. Eye, and scored some live screenings of classic silent films in Berkeley (Phantom of the Opera) a few years ago.

So has anyone heard the new one? "Yell & Ice". It's allegedly good? I will listen to tonight.

Um is it OK to raise my eyebrows a tad at "$12.3 million for medical expenses and lost earnings" if I also say that I'm pleased for the dude and in general when Ford (or whoever) lose cases like this?

Down In The Babestation At Midnight (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 28 May 2009 21:21 (fourteen years ago) link

dude can't move, i'm not going to begrudge him some $$$ in addition to his actual expenses (esp. since it sounds like he needs 24 hour care indefinitely)

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Thursday, 28 May 2009 21:32 (fourteen years ago) link

I imagine that includes the cost of a lifetime with 24-hour attendant care.

this is the one I keep coming back to: http://www.dustedmagazine.com/reviews/3427

I enjoyed Dax's solo record from January. It was great to see him do good work after what he went through.
