Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 09:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Groovin' with Mr Bloe; it's funny - I seem to have included that song in loadds cof threads (almost as many threads as The Flamingoes' I Only Have Eyes ... which, coincidentally, has just redently been sampled).

Cyndi Lauper - "She Bop"
Mark Hollis - "The Gift"
The Beatles - "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey" (this one's kinda understandable since Beatles samples are expensive as hell.)

"Rain on the Scarecrow," John Cougar Mellencamp (drum beat)
"Hair of the Dog," Nazareth

Talking of Billy Joel, how about that keyboard riff on the chorus of "Pressure"? For an electroclash tune, maybe...

has anyone used "Unbelievable" by EMF? Specifically, the music that plays during the lyrics "the things you say / your purple prose just gives you away" ?

King Kobra (King Kobra), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 20:33 (nineteen years ago) link

The lead-in riff for Genesis' "Return Of The Giant Hogweed". Preferably on some jiggy Master P. style 808 shit with hi-hats going all buckwild and every last motherfucker in a three-mile radius shouting the hooks.

Alex in NYC, see Disco Inferno's "It's a Kid's World". There's another song that samples it, too, but I can't think of it offhand.

Lizzy Mercier Descloux - "Wawa"

Hey, this ALEX punk once made fun of me saying he preferred DI to Disco Inferno, and now suddenly he comes around! ;-)

I still do, but if the Igster is being used, I'd like to hear it. Disco Inferno can otherwise go jump in a massive pile of dung.

Has anyone used the intro bassline for Nilsson's "Jump into the Fire"?

Good one!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 23:29 (nineteen years ago) link

spencer davis group, "i'm a man"
pretty much ANY early zz top riff --"just got paid," maybe?
"expressway to your heart," soul survivors
"children of the grave," black sabbath
"two princes," spin doctors
"mississippi queen," mountain
"hot rod," black oak arkansas
"free for all," ted nugent

i mean, when you get down to it, there are TONS of unbelievably funky '70s rock that nobody has thought to touch, as far as I can see. I've never really understood why...

chuck, Tuesday, 23 November 2004 23:44 (nineteen years ago) link

"two princes," spin doctors

Seconded. And an enjoyable song in its own right, despite being placed in a jillion lame-ass "comedy" flicks.

"oh well," the rockets (and maybe the fleetwood mac version too)
and "tusk," for that matter (esp now that marching bands are so popular on ying yang twins and destinys child records)

& has anybody ever sampled "me amd julio down by the schoolyard"??

chuck, Wednesday, 24 November 2004 01:20 (nineteen years ago) link

& has anybody ever sampled "me amd julio down by the schoolyard"??

No, but Paul Simon made a video for the song in '89 or so with an incredible acapella rap intro by Big Daddy Kane.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 01:43 (nineteen years ago) link

the guitar into to Martha and the Muffins' Echo Beach - just because it's so superior to the rest of the song and deserves it's own moment in the sun.

Zep, "Good Times, Bad Times"

-- Dominique (d_leon...) (webmail), November 23rd, 2004 3:57 PM. (dleone) (later) (link)

A little shred of it was used as a sort of between-sample bumper in the Beastie Boys' "Shake Your Rump", and I'm fairly sure a more substantial bit was used for Cornelius' "Heavy Metal Thunder".

And c'mon, there's like 10 different Van Halen tracks that need to be sampled rite now; no need for that-fuckery. (Oh, hey, how about the first several seconds of their version of "Dancing in the Streets"?)

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 04:55 (nineteen years ago) link

"Mississippi Queen" was sampled in "Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun"

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:26 (nineteen years ago) link

lots of billy joel breaks
wait, has Steve Miller "Take the Money and Run" ever been sampled?

I've got a self-produced song containing both of these (the Billy Joel break is from "Don't Ask Me Why".) The reason I've never uploaded that one is because, well, it contains samples of Billy Joel and Steve Miller. Not the coolest dudes to sample in the world.

I would also add:
"Wounded Kite" by Pavement
"Trying to Live My Life Without You" by Bob Seger
"Murder" by Eleventh Dream Day
And this one, written by Stevie Wonder and performed by Ms. Carole Kaye

(God bless whoever showed me that Carole Kaye site on the bass thread!)

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Edgar Winter Group's "Free Ride"--there's an incredibly funky breakdown about 2/3 of the way into the song. Nobody's taken advantage of it, to my knowledge.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Has anyone used the break in "Magic Man"?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 05:54 (nineteen years ago) link

'Singapore' by Tom Waits (the bass outro)
'Blank Generation' Richard Hell/Voidoids (guitar intro)
something by John Martyn - 'Big Muff' or 'Smiling Stranger'

apols if any of these done already

bham, Wednesday, 24 November 2004 09:57 (nineteen years ago) link

I was going to say "Groovin With Mr Bloe", but Jez beat me to it upthread. So how about "Hide Out" by The Hideaways? It's very rare. (But I have a copy. And no, you can't.) Sounds a bit like The Mohawks "Champ" meets "Smokey Joe's La La".

Then there's The Upsetters "Bucky Skank" - especially that ascending glissando bassline.

I also long to hear the spoken intro to X-Ray Spex "I Am A Cliche" dropped into the middle of a hard house track.

i sampled "thirsty and miserable" for a song i recorded once. the results were mediocre, through no fault of Black Flag's of course.

The bassline from "Peaches" by the Stranglers

Ms. Dynamite has used this, I think...

Warda: EHDOUNOUL AYAM, composed by Baligh Hamdi (one of whose melodic fragments was appropriated for "Big Pimpin'"). Crazy Arab psychedelic electric organ intro.

LaRue (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 16:34 (nineteen years ago) link

I have thought this about so many songs at one time or another, but I can't think of them at the moment.

LaRue (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 16:40 (nineteen years ago) link

(The intro. to that Warda song is the only good part though.)

"children of the grave," black sabbath

ur, someone sampled that.. but I'm not at liberty to say who yet. *cough*

I mentioned this a long time ago in a different thread ... but the horn riff on Jay & the Techniques' "Keep the Ball Rollin'." Someone could use that to a similar effect as that of the Chi-Lites track on "Crazy in Love."

Willie the Pimp comes to mind (won't leave my mind)

if indeed it hasn't been, then it must be b/c mr. zappa was VERY much anti-sampling. as are the executors of his estate, apparently.

notwithstanding that little snag -- the intro to "inca roads" would also be great to use as a sample.
