i need to replace my yes vinyl with those remastered cds.

amateur!!st, Friday, 12 November 2004 04:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Those remaster CDs suck with their bullshit single versions and alternate takes. If any band should not havet their records spoiled with bonus tracks tacked on it's these guys. There should be silence to contemplate cosmic redemption after "Perpetual Change," "Heart of the Sunrise," Siberian Khatru," etc.

The best overall I would say is "Revealing Science of God", followed closely on its heels by "Ritual" though these are kind of the predictable choices.

However, I do sincerely believe the from the middle onwards of "The Remembering" is probably the most powerful moments on the entire album. "The Ancient", though probably the weakest in terms of structure/cohesion, is the best in terms of crazed-hippie-Yesness and the rhythmic thing. "Ritual" also gets major props for the drum-electronics solo (even better when they played it live in the mid-70s with the sampled (?) growling and barking).

FWIW, the band still cranks out pretty cool versions of "Revealing Science" and "Ritual" nowadays. I saw them on the last tour at Tsongas Arena (apparently, they are releasing this show on DVD in December--I think PBS was showing it a few months ago). On that night, all of the air conditioning was shut off--it was like 90 degrees in there, literally--and then they dragged out the timpani for Chris Squire to bang on alongside Alan White for the "Ritual" solo. I thought my brain was melting, but no, this was not a heat-induced hallucination.

when i was a very skinny kid in jr. high, i would lift weights in our rec room all summer listening to this album. i thought it would give me super-strength or some shit. all it made me do was stop lifting weights and get some sugar cookies and read the lyric sheet and try to figure out WHAT THE FUCK JON ANDERSON'S BLATHERING ON ABOUT. i think it did get me reading about eastern religions.

this album is really funky though.

I have to admit my favorite Yes recordings are not by Yes at all, but by Steve Howe's earlier band, Tomorrow.

Begs2, what happened to the song that you once knew so well?

citrus scent lysol disinfectant antibacterial kitchen cleaner, Friday, 12 November 2004 06:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Sol, Dhoop
Sun
Ilios
Naytheet
Ah Kin
Saule
Tonatiuh
Qurax
Gunes, Grian
Surje
Ir
Samse

So the flowering creativity of life wove its web face to face with the shallow
And their gods sought out and conquered
Ah Kin

Do the leaves of green stay greener through the autumn
Does the colour of the sun turn crimson white
Does a shadow come between us in the winter
Is the movement really light

And I heard a million voices singing
Acting to the story that they had heard about
Does one child know the secret and can say it
Or does it all come out along without you
Along without you
Along without you

Where does reaon stop and killing just take over
Does a lamb cry out before we shoot it dead
Are there many more in comfort understanding
Is the movement in the head

And I heard a million voices singing
Acting to the story that they had heard about
Does one child know the secret and can say it
Or does it all come out along without you
Along without you
Along without you

I agree.

I still maintain that the Black Crowes stole the riff for 'Remedy' from 'Revealing Science of God'.

I read in a ca. 1980 interview w/Anderson that Radio Luxembourg had planned to air the album in its entirety a few days before its release. The appointed time arrives, the tape rolls -- silence. The studio had been delivered a blank tape. Anderson said that that was the moment that he felt the commercial/critical tide begin to turn.

Also, Sheryl Crow's melody (beginning of the chorus) for "All I Want to Do" and one of the main riffs of "Ritual"

hahaha

(That's the same riff that De La have just looped on "The Grind Date" btw. Yes = fountain of all modern pop?)

...altho I do like the percussion break in "Ritual" and the sustain-y guitar soloing in "The Ancient", and of course the cover's nice. Can't remember anything else about it, except that the lyrics were near-impossible to read. (Yay!)

That amrush thing is pretty awesome. I like this question:

"What, on the other hand, is the point of the boring, repetitive, aimless, extraneous music on Tales, other than to fill up each side of an album?"

The answer is Relayer.

I listened to this at work today and my neighbor said it sounded like a video game.

reggie (qualmsley), Friday, 13 April 2018 00:24 (six years ago) link

I need to make a stronger dive into TFTO ("Constant doors will open eyes"), but the opening 20 seconds of "Nous Sommes Du Soleil" would be the most awesome "walking up to the plate" music for a baseball player ever. Hell, the only songs that I feel come close are "Timebomb" by The Old 97s, "1 Billion Dogs" by Jay Som, or "Queen" by Perfume Genius.

Prefecture, Friday, 13 April 2018 04:17 (six years ago) link

Tales has great moments throughout, though I mostly return to it for the "Nous sommes du soleil" moments on Ritual. I don't think it really detracts in their 70s career, nor that it is all that ridiculous, despite its symbolic image of the ivory tower of prog rock.
Another sun-explosive Yes moment is of course Awaken.
