Wok Tish EP!!!! I need a copy asap...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:05 (twenty years ago) link

there's a "saturday nite live 2" that's fantastic, too. it's a little heavier on authentic period disco that SNL 1. look out for the ann margaret track they use, "everybody needs somebody sometimes".

let me know if you want a copy of "the u-star daze", gaz.

idjut boys are like the progenitors of the revival style that chicken lips is currently getting props for. (i know, it's weird to say that someone's a progenitor of a revival style)

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 April 2004 18:45 (twenty years ago) link

that'd be great jess...thanks!!!

i think i'm going through some weird phase. i just listened to akwaaba and really liked it.

this or that new universal sounds kozmic jazz thing...decisions decisions!

hahaha ... like food and shelter or music??

"beatin' on dave" isn't just funny, it's one of the fucking heaviest deep house tracks ever.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 03:54 (eighteen years ago) link

i got so much idjut boys love to give.

everyone who is feeling the idjuts go to slsk and get dj harvey's "sarcastic disco" mix. he did it as a promo for an LA fashion label. it's great. while you're there pick up the "maddog chronicles" mix he did for freshjive to promote their tony alva documentary. it's more rock than disco but it hits that 70s stoner boogie vibe perfectly.

i wish maurice fulton was still rocking this style instead of noo-vaw no-wave nonsense. mutsumi = yoko.

(ok just kidding i love late lennon and i'm sympathetic but MU sort of blows compared to boof! or ladyvipb or even stress...)

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 03:58 (eighteen years ago) link

sadly food and shelter for my family or music...or i'd have both!

hey! you owe me an idjut boys disc vahid.

two weeks pass...
Fuck this is so great I am itching to give a copy to an ex-girlfriend of mine even though I am seriously pissed off with her at the moment and shouldn't be giving her presents. She'd love it. Actually, I'd probably give it to her and then find out that she's already got it. Worse still, that her current bf introduced her to it. Still. What a great record.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 20 May 2005 16:48 (eighteen years ago) link

giving your ex a cd only to discover new boyfriend has aleady given it to her - classic or dud?

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 20 May 2005 16:52 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, there is form here. A couple of months ago I was all excited at hearing Amerie's '1 Thing' and texted her to ask if she'd heard it as she'd love it and... yes she had. From him, yes. About three weeks beforehand. Pretty much dud, I'd say.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 20 May 2005 16:55 (eighteen years ago) link

yup, i'd agree.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 20 May 2005 16:56 (eighteen years ago) link

If it happens to you of all people then there is no hope for me.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 20 May 2005 16:57 (eighteen years ago) link

why don't you just give a copy to a newer, hotter friend?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 20 May 2005 16:59 (eighteen years ago) link

Funnily enough, these days I find making tapes/CDs for girls I fancy corny and too embarrassing to do anymore. I can only do it for current and ex-girlfriends.

Also, this mix is just so up her street.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 20 May 2005 17:00 (eighteen years ago) link

I should explain that I'm listening to this for the first time right now and I'm only up to 'Underwater' now. Although Colin has sent me an mp3 of it since, it's only now that I'm really reminded of the feeling of hearing it at Optimo and asking you what it was, Twitch.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 20 May 2005 17:12 (eighteen years ago) link

this Press Play mix is so not what i was expecting. it's really great, but i was expecting a synthy disco house mix. it's got all these covers of old tracks. the Word Up cover is especially great.

mullygrubber, did i give you Plantlife cd? their cd has really been growing on me. my wife was listening to and loving it, but she thought it was from the 70s until the monie love sample came in mid album.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 10 June 2005 03:15 (eighteen years ago) link

i am too woozy from allergy meds right now to be fully articulate but it probably had something to do with the usual "expected something other than what it was and tuned out" nonsense i am constantly guilty of. (what i expected i don't remember. something faze actionish, no doubt.)

strng hlkngtn, Friday, 10 June 2005 03:19 (eighteen years ago) link

thats ok strongo, i wouldn't want you sharing your sources. and it was misleading anyway.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 10 June 2005 03:21 (eighteen years ago) link

ok

what's up with PHANTOM SLASHER and MAJOR SWELLINGS?

i just picked up phantom slasher's "PUDDLE & SPOUT" lp for $5 and i really like it! is this an idjut boys side project? is it dj harvey? somebody else entirely?

how about major swellings? is that any good? is major swellings related to lindstrom / prins thomas?

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 05:17 (eighteen years ago) link

ok forget the last question, discogs.com just answered this for me - but still, is it any good?

side note: i had a hell of a weekend! i picked up

phantom slasher - puddle & spout
faze action - plans & designs
akwaaba - too shiny
jhelisa - galactica rush
chateau flight - puzzle
i:cube - 3
all of the kelley polar EPs
dj food - jazz brakes 5

it is all bongos and jazz beards over here.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 05:20 (eighteen years ago) link

What kind of instrument is a "jazz beard"?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 06:22 (eighteen years ago) link

blunt (blunt), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 16:18 (eighteen years ago) link

The Major Swellings disc is excellent, it's mostly disco/electro-italo re-edits, but if you didn't know the source material, it would fit right in the with the full-on dancefloor tracks that Lindstrom/Prins-Thomas are doing now.

the last mix is just embarrassing ... i got distracted and suddenly realized the record had run out ... so i threw on the next one but forgot that i still had the reverb turned all the way up and the pitch turned down from "oochie coochie"

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 8 June 2009 03:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i should go back with audacity or something and throw in a sound effect or something to cover up the silence

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 8 June 2009 03:36 (fourteen years ago) link

also got completely carried away with the delay on "sweet gerry dynamite", hope nobody gets a headache

GRUBBLE

Lasagne For 10 - Chilly "For Your Love"
Size Doesn't Matter - "Whole Lotta Love" (sounds like tina turner)
Eat Them Jeans
Staying Noid - Richard Ace "Stayin' Alive" (??)
Backwards Is The Best Way Forward. Baby
Satchell On My Door Step - Roxy Music "The Main Thing"
Your Wistful Sigh
Love Ranger

KEY TO THE TRIPOD

Oxymoron - some weird mashup of "genius of love" and "fly like an eagle"
Poxymoron - Boys Town Gang "You're The One"
Tripod - Warp 9 "Nunk"
Le Cock Noir
Blow Me Slow - Hot RS "Slow Blow"
Noid Life - Spandau Ballet "Lifeline"
Nicoteen Five Sinners "Magic"
Una Bella Donna - Junior Byron "Woman"
Tent Pole
Bethlehem
I Got My Love (i NEED to know what this one is. it's killing me)
Sax & Violence - Leroy Hutson "Love The Feeling"
Going Greek - Demis Roussos "I Dig You"

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Thursday, 11 June 2009 15:53 (fourteen years ago) link

Tent Pole - Class Action "Weekend"

psychgawsple, Thursday, 11 June 2009 16:04 (fourteen years ago) link

Tripod AKA Skull Volley

psychgawsple, Thursday, 11 June 2009 16:08 (fourteen years ago) link

Size Doesn't Matter - definitely Tina Turner

Eat Them Jeans - Peter Tosh "Buk-In-Hamm Palace"

I Got My Love - Front Page "You Got My Love" (also edited as "You Got Love Song" on c.o.m.b.i.)

d/ling mix now.

CosMc (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 11 June 2009 19:33 (fourteen years ago) link

Staying Noid - Richard Ace "Stayin' Alive" (??)

is this the same track sampled for jess & crabbe's "in your eer"? bassline sounds identical..

anybody know the original for "sheen" off the phantom slasher "puddle & spout" CD? sounds like something off CTI maybe??

guammls (QE II), Saturday, 13 June 2009 06:19 (fourteen years ago) link

dan & conrad never apologize for reverb & delay

seriously, criticizing idjut boys for their use of echo is in a way like criticizing hendrix's use of fuzz or zapp's use of talkbox

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 15 March 2012 15:25 (twelve years ago) link

WTF?

they must mean "first LP of original exclusive productions"

because by my count they've released

noid long player
life: the shoeing you deserve
puddle & spout
gruble
key to the tripod
desire lines

and

more or less / the u-star daze

which admittedly is an early "greatest hits" comp and mix

the late great, Thursday, 15 March 2012 22:48 (twelve years ago) link

so which would be the best place to start?

boxedjoy, Friday, 16 March 2012 00:25 (twelve years ago) link

U-Star Daze.

“What we’ve tried to do is make an LP, four tracks a side on vinyl. You stick it on your stereo, have a cup of coffee and read the paper. When it’s finished you stick the other side on. So we’ve made an LP in the traditional way.”

mizzell, Friday, 16 March 2012 14:14 (twelve years ago) link

wasn't too impressed with "One For Kenny" til that piano break came in, then it was pretty great. very much looking forward to drinking coffee and reading the paper to this.

mizzell, Friday, 16 March 2012 14:26 (twelve years ago) link

meanderthals was my soundtrack for that on a lot of sunny weekend mornings last year

the late great, Friday, 16 March 2012 16:00 (twelve years ago) link

my favorites is actually "life: the shoeing you deserve"

"more or less" is a 2cd comp w/ a mixed 2nd disc, that mixed 2nd disc was re-released in the US as "the u-star daze"

i would go with any of those, and then move on to puddle & spout, gruble, etc etc which tbf are basically i guess just elaborate re-edit comps

the late great, Friday, 16 March 2012 16:01 (twelve years ago) link

second Meanderthals, sublime balearic dub bliss.

Since those early albums seem impossible to find at a reasonable price, I've got stuck into Press Play and Night Dubbin. Really enjoying the track selection on Press Play, but I feel like as a mix it kinda crashes with the cover of Word Up and doesn't really get itself back on track, like the section from there to the end should have been at the start to warm up instead. Night Dubbin is great though, I love the sense of dark queasiness hanging over it, and both mixes are so impressive with the way they eschew traditional beat-matching yet putting together transitions that seem to flow naturally.
