Indie Bastard, Saturday, 3 April 2004 15:22 (twenty years ago) link

That looks like a great comp. Shame they had to ruin it with a Fall track.

No cave in the world is deep enough. And I'm just talking about the wrath of Donna Brown alone here!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 3 April 2004 17:49 (twenty years ago) link

frankly, once they run and hide they've done our job for us.

"Blister In The Sun" was released a bit before 1986.

Fall fans are such sensitive little flowers

"how DARE he not-ah worship-ah our grotty Lord and Savio(u)r? Huff pant stomp flail fists rarh!"

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:11 (twenty years ago) link

hey Nate, you even heard "Mr. Pharmacist"?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:13 (twenty years ago) link

Why is it that "indie" so often includes "major label"? Am I missing something? (e.g. Elastica, Jesus & Mary Chain...) What exactly does "indie" mean in this scheme?

(As for The Fall, how about a pre-Brix-era track! Say, "Hip Priest...")

no opinion, Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:20 (twenty years ago) link

are all these bands indie in the UK, maybe?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:24 (twenty years ago) link

The Fall track's only on there so the makers can feel dangerous. Cos otherwise, this compilation is really very average. The Bees, for goodness' sakes. THE BEES. No need.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:33 (twenty years ago) link

would you guys mind letting the Kings Of Leon defect to the UK so I can say that they're another shitty UK band that the US has no need for?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:38 (twenty years ago) link

Fuck no.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:44 (twenty years ago) link

awww...

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:50 (twenty years ago) link

stevem's compilation is pretty good. Esp Black Grape. They tend to be forgotten about which is a damn shame. 1st album is a classic.

Indie Bastard, Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:50 (twenty years ago) link

well that's one of the top ten singles of the 90s, canonically speaking

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 3 April 2004 19:08 (twenty years ago) link

this looks like someone vomited into a bowler hat and there were little specks of solid gold mixed in

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 3 April 2004 19:12 (twenty years ago) link

Elvis is Dead, Saturday, 3 April 2004 19:54 (twenty years ago) link

I like Elvis is Dead's. The Lonely Moans!! Must be only the second or third time they've been mentioned on ILM. They were great. Anyway, that list's a bit more like it. I don't what that crap up at the top of the thread is supposed to represent.

Here was mine from an earlier thread:

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 3 April 2004 21:50 (twenty years ago) link

Snrub's is the best so far - a more representative mix of UK and US. I think, though, that once you do this, it becomes less cohesive. husker du next to, say, ned's atomic dustbin is weird, but then so is the smiths and archers of loaf.

paulhw (paulhw), Saturday, 3 April 2004 23:21 (twenty years ago) link

Broheems, I remember I have tried to dl a lot of the songs in your list, but I could not find almost any of them.

I am from Brazil and it is difficult to find here even an album from the white stripes. So, I get this lonely moans song (the only lonely moans song I found) because of your list. And It is really great. Thanks.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 4 April 2004 11:25 (twenty years ago) link

Is it just me or is the top one 1980-2004 as in "2004 compilation, with some 80s tune, and one or two inbetween"?

The point of these compilations really baffles me.
