The Telescopes: Classic or Dud?

My only fan letter EVAH! went to The Telescopes. 'The Perfect Needle', '7th# Disaster' and the debut album were all great, then they turned into a shitty indie-dance band and I completely lost interest. They were great live, cool as fuck too. It pained me to see them looking like The Soupdragons a year or two later. But I can't actually recall hearing any of the later stuff so maybe my rejection was premature.

i SAWN them supporting prml scrm (who they blew off stage) and w/the sunflowers supporting them (who blew them off stage) They were great until, as mentioned above, they went "baggy" (baggy = sux0r) The singer could get a bit irritating (& his lyricks = /<-sux0r) but I especially liked the Pink Fairies lookalike bassist, & THEE grate g! mm!ck ov having thee 2 guitarists facing their huge marshall stax0rs (IE away from the audience) Thee lead guitarist turned around for his cacophonous solos IIRC....Anyway, Thee tescelopes = classic on this basis

Of course they're CLASSIC. I saw them in the Camden Falcon, it was one of the best gigs I've ever been at. total raw power.

Did they release anything on Creation other than the Flying e.p.?

The Dirty Vicar, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Several EPs and at least one album -- I actually have them all thanks to a friend, but I keep forgetting to actually listen to the damn things. Somewhere scattered on various mp3 collections I've got all the original and well out of print singles when they sounded like they were gargling feedback and spewing noise.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Of course they were classic, in fact I can't think of a dud track by them at all. The early snarly feedbacky stuff was cool, even though it sounded like it had been recorded down a toilet, then they seemed to discover 'good' drugs around the end of '89, the "To kill a slow girl walking" and "Precious little" EPs show them stretching out in odd directions, slowing down, using dynamics more, and I doubt if anyone else bar AR Kane could beat the wonderous whalesong of "Pure sweetest ocean" (possibly my fave 'Scopes track, along with "Please tell mother"). Then they went to Creation, "Everso" was a bit of a Soup Dragons wash out but was made worthwhile for the Beach Boys / Manson cover on the b-side, then "Celeste" was a swirling mix of Stone Roses basslines, Spacemen 3 psychedelia and all that, then the "Flying" EP was pure perfection, then the second eponymous LP was superb lay-back-in-the-sun music. Then nothing at all for a long long time. So classic all the way, from beginning to end.

Ned, dig 'em all out, they're great.

Rob M, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

CLASSIC!! [totally]. they never EVER settled down with a predictable formula like most bands. they took REAL risks & still came up with record after record of mind exploding music. a band like that is a rare treasure in these bland & cynically market orientated times. deep hole ends is possibly THE most beatifull record of all time!!! AND THEY"RE BACKK.. check this out - http://www.doubleagentrecords.com/teles

The TELESCOPES are incredble!!!! The self-titled lp on CREATION is the best lp they made.. It's so wonderful.. it's timeless... I never got sick of it..

They are coming back and making a NEW telescopes LP.. in the meantime, check out Lawrie's new band UNISEX on Double Agent Records.. They have an lp called STRATOSFEAR.. it's also brilliant.. lots of therimin.. it's tripped out spacerock. Not as good as the TELESCOPES lp but up there.. Todd

WHat can I say that hasn't been said , they are my favorite band .From the first time I heard them I have been after all their stuff and it is all classic. The last LP is my all one time favorite with the best music I have heard. As for unisex "statosphere" get it I was blown away and now the Scopes are coming back with a new lp my life is now complete. It's also nice to see people who haven't forgotten the Scopes, I can't understand why they weren't bigger (maybe it's good they weren't) I feel Creation made some big mistakes letting the likes of the scopes, adorable and MBV go. Just for your info The scopes appear on the new Creation double comp.

I saw them at the Bull and Gate playing support to the Rosehips 1988 There were about ten people in the audience. I have photos if anyones interested. They were good then trying to be the velvets and the mary chain. I saw them a few time s after that but think they lost it after they changed direction and the guitarist actualy faced the audience!

Classic. Their last album on Creation is just incredible. The early stuff was pretty derivative and subpar. They exploded after arriving at Creation...probably one of the more incredible leaps in ability I have ever heard. I hope their new album is better than the Unisex I have heard.

CLASSIC! been a fan for about 10 years, and have never lost interest.anything they have released has been perfect, basically ,unlike so many bands today.frustrating that they get overlooked in some of creations history though.seen them perform some of the new tracks recently,so "third wave" is gonna be a timeless classic,as the last album was,and still is.shamefully underrated band, but not for long...

My, my, my what a surprise. I certinly love the Telescopes. Spaceships on the s/t lp is my fave. I've never, ever met a single other person that knew of them so it is brilliant to see a whole mess of them at once.

Ooh, this thread has been resurrected, cool. In case any of the 'Scopes fans are still around, I have another question- I personally adore both the albums (and reckon on the new one being just as good), but they do have very different sounds. Do you people like both, or do you only listen to one of them? And if just the one, which one?

emil.y, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Well Emily, I listen to both, but the second more frequently. I have to be in the right mood for "Taste" and the dreadful production does it no favours in that it's a bit of a struggle to listen to, but if I want loud distorted suicidal frenzy then that's where I head, but more often than not I want happy freaky gentle weird which is where the second LP comes in. Let's face it, it's got "Please tell mother" on it - what can compete with it? And for heaven's sake, what about the late '91 Peel session? Will that ever get issued? Sigh...

Rob M, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

They're just a crap rip-off of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Same riffs and everything!

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

yes, it's well documented that the telescopes got into lots of trouble way back in the late 80's /early 90's.. for using their clockwork time machines to steal future riffs from the far inferior black webel water sports club. honestly marcello, shame on you for mentioning such insignificantly wafer thin mediocrity like that in the presence of such grace. you've let yourself down lad. we know you now for your crap taste. personally i'm a b sides fan. i love everything they did, but all those b sides!! surely there's an albums worth there? & as for the peel sessions, it's simply insane that they haven't been released. i'm writing to peel. if anyone else wants to join me, his address is john.peel@bbc.co.uk up the

B. Jam, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Classic? The telescopes are classic as one can get. I can't believe there are this many telescopes fans in the world, it is pretty awesome to see all of these people supporting such good music. I first heard them from a friend who said, "You've gotta check out this acid sounding band!" Acid sounding? Anyway, I wasn't that into them until I bought the self-titled second LP from Vinyl Fetish in Hollywood CA. I couldn't believe how good it was. I listened to it so much that the cardboard packaging is falling apart. They are and have been one of my favorite bands ever. Now they have a new album coming out, incredible. I just hope there are a few songs that sound as good as "spacehips" or "splashdown" Man, this is crazy...

Saw 'em in Nottingham last night & got a preview of the new album - expect something ASTONISHING and nothing like you ever heard - was scared to move for a couple of minutes after, very disorientating and very Telescopian. Anyone who listens to all their stuff and hears the common thread (Feel) 'll know what i mean. Intensity and Spaceness. Yeah, expect the unexpected alright.

Adore avin em back...

Jeez, does life get any better. Hi everyone, another life long Telescopes fan here who's 30 and acting like a little kid about the new album. Only just found out about this page too.

Classic, classic, classic. Heard them first on Two Pint Takehome, a compilation cassette where they covered Tomorrow Never Knows. Corresponded with Jo for a while and was lucky enough when I was about 16/17 when I first heard of them, to get the split flexi with Loop and all the rare singles (that weren't too rare then but still cost me £27 for a 7" single)

I'm a very happy man and glad to see that such a brilliant band hasn't been forgotten. Love both previous albums and listen to them regularly but Taste is definitely a darker album.

I tend not to be very nostalgic, so my Telescopes records have sat idly for years, (keeping company with my Loop and Swervedriver LPs) But by way of snazzy Double Agent Records I picked up the brand new "Third Wave" and it's terrific. I could happily listen to a loop of "Telsa Death Ray" for hours.

some lucky fakejazz bastard just got my copy of Taste off ebay. I don't think Taste is very good, hence my auctioning it. But the Creation record is sublime and the new album is wonderful as well. Their live show last November was EXCELLENT; Steven said they got booed at their first comeback show earlier last year since everyone was expecting shoegaze and instead got improvised electronic weird shit.

I just bought my ticket for Audioscope in Oxford this Saturday on the strength of seeing The Telescopes again. They used to be an amazing live band if they don't deliver a hefty dose of Taste I will be mucho disappointed.

They used to be an amazing live band if they don't deliver a hefty dose of Taste I will be mucho disappointed.

You may be disappointed then. The last show I heard of theirs (back in 2002) was Steve and Jo only doing a 40 minute slow grinding instrumental drone that sounded like tectonic plates moving - then it concluded with a dirgelike slowcore "The Perfect Needle"

I liked it, but your mileage may vary.

Gator Magoon (Chris Barrus), Monday, 27 September 2004 17:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, I haven't seen them since they supported Damo Suzuki a couple of years ago, but Taste it was not.

Personally, I seem to have developed in musical, um, taste in a similar direction to them, from frenetic teenage angst to dreamy spaced-outness (although perhaps not so much of that, although I did like Slowdive and Ride a bit, the 'Scopes were always my main focus there) to the more electronic side of things (tho' I think I'm further down that line than they are). That similarity in progression is gratifying, but I don't think that they're quite as exciting as when I first heard Taste - there's not the same urgency there. If that's what you're looking for then it's not what you'll get.

Still, fuckin-A is what I say, you should definitely check it out, just try to remove preconceptions.

well Damo Suzuki is headlining audioscope, so it looks like it's the droney noises again. I'm looking forward to seeing them, because I've heard loads of people rave on about them, but I still haven't managed to listen to any of their music yet. Saturday's going to be great.

Yup (2nd studio at least, there was a semi-legit live album called Trade Mark of Quality that came out after the first). Had a ton of singles and EPs as well around that time.

is their other stuff that good?

Depends on what you're after -- earlier is some pretty goddamned violent music, up through the Taste album, while the s/t is them finding a balance between that and the pretty side of things. You'd want to find all the Creation era singles for the B-sides, at least.

I just found out that they are playing at The Spitz tonight:

Sat 20 Nov
The Spitz and Penny Black Music present... Vibracathedral Orchestra + The Telescopes + Sunshine Valley Dance Band + Heist + Leo Avanti (Kosmische Club) and Olga Pennyblack > 1am
Another excellent night from Penny Black. This time will feature The Telescopes who'll perform their cross between early John Cale era Velvets and a noisy Jesus and Mary Chain. Also appearing are Vibracathedral Orchestra who combine compulsive rhythms and debased ragged raga. Heist's music of sixties spy film scores and Ex- Ultrasound and Spacemen 3. Sunshine Valley Dance Band also perform.

I'm quite tempted to go, but I'm skint and actually still feeling quite rough.

Still love the Telescopes but only the stuff they put out on Creation Records, with those four or five EP’s being their best stuff. Some news:

Textile Rds is proud to announce the release of the new Telescopes album called Infinite Suns. This release is a vinyl only release and is strictly limited. The release date is June 24th. You can pre order this LP in our shop for a cool price untill june 10th. All orders will be dispatched early june...

Infinite Suns begins a new era of change in the Telescopes music field.

This LP is very much number one, the introduction to a serie of release (2 new albums and one live recording)

This new LP is a selection of analogue tape recordings taken between 2006 and 2007, using a multi directional mic to capture environmental response. Recording levels were set close to saturation, allowing for interaction with the tape machine itself.

Side one closes with a piece centered around a lock-groove from the run-out of The Telescopes first album and is lock-grooved again to play endlessly.

The recording took place in a room used by a deep trance medium to hold investigative seances. The album ends with The Telescopes channelling out on each others instruments.

The sound of earthquakes dreaming, where black holes reveal infinite suns.

Side 1--Static Charge/Thought Loops/Northumberland
side 2--Tidal Bandwidth/Chrome Gulls

mentions a couple of compilations released a couple of months apart, but neither go back to the beginning (not that the really old stuff is as good as the later stuff, is a bit shouty). and there's one on space age from 4 years before that.

(it also talks about the creation album as if it's 'lost'. it was on bloody creation. EVERYBODY i knew at the time had a copy (one friend ended up with three as he was a big fan and it was out the same week as his birthday). but hey...)

saw them quite a few times at the time (20 years ago...). supporting the mary chain and at reading festival in particular. leaving the stage and letting the whalesong continue for 10 more minutes.

Thanks Ned!

Nice, Rob. I still cringe every time I read the first post of this thread, though.

two months pass...

The bits on Taste that sound like Halo of Flies or some AmRep band are really jarring.

they have a new album out soon!

OutdoorFish, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 20:23 (ten years ago) link

i was ill and didn't get to the gig in islington. still kinda curious but wasn't that keen on the new stuff i've heard on bandcamp.

rob m's long blog post doens't mention their version of "Candy Says" which is worth a listen. (although the version on amazon sounds like a chipmunk singing)

koogs, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 21:05 (ten years ago) link

I didn't even know about their version of "Candy says" until I found it on Spotify the other day, and that sounds like the Chipmunks. I'm not sure if I mentioned they did a stunning version of "Morning Dew" on an indie conp in 1990 which is worth seeking out too.

Sorry couldn't listen to that version of "Candy Says," nor the Beth Gibbons version. This one is much better:

two years pass...

caught stephen last night in SF; when he plays the US he mostly tours with lsd and the search of god backing him up. I'm impressed that they spend one day practicing and have the set down although to be fair a lot of it is feedback at maximum volume and stephen lays on the floor screaming into a mic. still worth checking out though. great version of the perfect needle.

one year passes...

free gig at the shacklewell arms last night.

played in front of the stage, 3 guitars and a wasp synth, all turned up loud, and all seemingly doing their own droney thing (the combined volume meaning that no-one could influence the overall sound that much). played for about 60 minutes and then left the instruments 'playing' as they went to the bar. that continued for at least another 20 minutes... (the sound guy seemed into it and happy to just leave it going)

koogs, Friday, 25 August 2017 09:53 (six years ago) link

(no songs as such, just one long noise)

koogs, Friday, 25 August 2017 09:53 (six years ago) link

Heroes still.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 25 August 2017 13:28 (six years ago) link

hmm, sounds like a very interesting one-off night. i know i would like to see them do some of their old songs.

i will vote their self titled Creation album very high on my Shoegazer albums poll that i will be opening in about two months or October 2017. exciting about running it.

oh wow

[w]More classic than dude as I loved their debut on Creation Records along with those singles. I bought Taste around the same time but never got into like the debut on Creation. Years later I bought Unisex but never got into like Bravecaptain (because of Boo Radleys), or Mojave 3( because of Slowdive). Was really excited when I heard Third Wave was going to come out in 2002. I bought it, played a few times and have never revisited.
I was on Bravecaptain web site and came across this by Joe Foster via www.poptones.co.uk:

What is the next reissue of Creation for Revola?

The next reissue is up for it are The Telescopes. They have one album that they said was never released. I don't know how a released album can never be released but it is a very long and complicated story with a lot of facts and I had to take a nap afterwards. The facts are that it is an excellent album, and should be out there....

FIRST POST EVER!

listening to taste tonight. it would be such a classic if it wasn't produced so horribly. still love it though.

Quoting AKM two years back:

Had never seen them or LSD before and...that's pretty much what happened last night! In a good way but it was almost an endurance test. Lineup this time around was most of LSD, Stephen and two other veteran guitarist looking types, hell of a racket on stage, and yes some screaming. Didn't immediately recognize any songs in the murk but it was all about the experience.
