If you're on the first disc, it's just warming up. Give it a chance.

I feel the same way about Spector's stuff, with the exception of "Be My Baby" and a few others. I much prefer Brian Wilson's wall of sound.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 21:29 (twenty years ago) link

probably because aside from the hits and the xmas album Spector's really overrated?

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 21:51 (twenty years ago) link

but everything on the first disc is fantastic. the xmas album is the overrated bit really but then i am more of a traditionalist for holiday tunes.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 04:31 (twenty years ago) link

If you have a pulse, by the time you hit the Ike and Tina stuff on the last disc, you should be fine...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 05:12 (twenty years ago) link

zip-a-dee-doo-dah.

Spector had a sense of power, an intensity that Wilson strove for but could never match, although I think Wilson's arrangements were much more thoughtfully inventive. But put it in context, pre-Beatles, he had a crapload of hits, and many of the non-hits are pretty amazing as well, see above, or Under the Moon of Love. But credit where credit is due, he owes a lot to Lieber and Stoller, for their songs and their arrangements.

Have a look:

http://www.bmi.com/awards/1999/images/philspector.gif

Look carefully. Look at the pose, the pretension implied in the stance. Look how he takes for granted that he's a rock god. I said on another thread that he's rock's Julius Caesar, and I'll stick by that assessment. In Caesar's time, his powerless Senators became bitter and turned on him. Spector instead had to deal with an angry harem. In a perfect world, all the women Spector had oppressed would rise up at once and stab him to death. Kind of the nightmare version of that scene in 8 1/2.

I read that all too fast, before the photo I was thinking a scene in 9 1/2 Weeks. Kim Bassinger could play the woman who got shot...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 08:00 (twenty years ago) link

Different thing altogether. May pang is brilliant.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 08:07 (twenty years ago) link

are you wearing the badge? i am!

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 08:46 (twenty years ago) link

I got the Phil Spector box for Christmas. Why is not changing my life the way I thought it would?

don't worry, this happens to me (and most everyone else, i bet) pretty much every time i buy something that i have unreasonably high expectations for. i wouldn't dismiss it after one listen: the tracks you mentioned may be the stuff that leaps out, but there's lots of overlooked stuff on "back to mono": it's one of my desert island picks (assuming box sets are allowed), easily. the lead vocal on "to know him is to love him" may be the single most spine-tingling vocal in all of rock.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 09:37 (twenty years ago) link

probably because aside from the hits and the xmas album Spector's really overrated?

um, what exactly do people rate of his BESIDES the hits and the Xmas album? it's a bit like saying "the beatles are really overrated aside from revolver, rubber soul, the white album and abbey road."

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 09:39 (twenty years ago) link

All killer, no filler.

may pang (maypang), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 09:45 (twenty years ago) link

hahaha

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 10:04 (twenty years ago) link

maypang, who the hell are you? You crack me up.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 10:05 (twenty years ago) link

And why is maypang named after a former girlfriend of John Lennon?

May - have you started the transformation of your bathroom yet?

I've said it before and I'll say it again: 'Death of a Ladies Man'

Ben Dot (1977), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 14:53 (twenty years ago) link

Don't feel bad. I boought a complete recital of the Qur'an and it didn't change my life. (I still haven't gotten past disc 28, I think.)

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 31 December 2003 15:01 (twenty years ago) link

so you got the Back to Monotheism box set?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 15:04 (twenty years ago) link

Disc 2 is where all the Ronettes songs are. That'll change your mind. That said, I listen to my Ronettes and Crystals best-of's a lot more than the box. I should get the Darlene Love too sometime.

what's FAP please?

lexurian (lexurian), Friday, 22 September 2006 11:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Fancy A Pint. When some of us get off our arses and meet up In Real Life.

(Mono is a pub in Glasgow with a record shop attached to it, making it the pub of choice for several ILXors)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 22 September 2006 11:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh right, was wondering if it was a reference to the Slam/Soma night 'Back to Mono' - which has to rate as the most unoriginal idea they've come up with since Positive Education.

lexurian (lexurian), Friday, 22 September 2006 11:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I ripped this and the Girl Group Sounds box and put them together as one playlist, which I've played into the ground at this point.

and PappaWheelie, author of Have You Ever Been Poxy Fuled? (PappaWheelie 2), Friday, 22 September 2006 15:14 (seventeen years ago) link

wow, when did the list price on this drop to $19.99?

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 22 September 2006 18:30 (seventeen years ago) link

I just picked it up. Taped most of it off my sister 10 years ago when she first got it. Now from amazon w/ shipping it's like 18 bucks. AMAZING.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 23 September 2006 03:43 (seventeen years ago) link

i saw that price a few months ago and bought it. shipping to canada was only $6 too.

two years pass...

Been listening to this all night. Such an amazing collection. Every time I listen, I swear, I find something new that I love. Was just intoxicated by The Ronettes' Born to Be Together.

Mordy, Thursday, 29 January 2009 04:41 (fifteen years ago) link

This collection is amazing. I don't understand why all these ILM fuckers aren't all over it.

the bass on this is MENTAL quiet innit? i mean i know it's the 60s and it's mono and shiz but still. try turning the bass up you get almost nothing on say Da Do Ron Ron.

piscesx, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 02:10 (eleven years ago) link

this box sounds fine to my ears, but was wondering if the more recent philles box set was an improvement? at this point, the back to mono thing is 20 years old? older?

tylerw, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 02:21 (eleven years ago) link

i copied this set from a friend in college and it just sat around my house for years before I actually gave it my time. wow, did it blow my mind! every song is like a universe unto itself.

Poliopolice, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 02:41 (eleven years ago) link

There's no space for bass in the mix. Too full of universe.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 02:45 (eleven years ago) link

back to mono released in 1991 i think. funny: the price of this thing dropped to like $5 new when spector was up on murder charges. when he went to jail, it was out of print and worth a bundle. now i guess it's been superseded by other collections. would probably buy a _complete_ philles set but i guess i have most of that stuff on boots. honestly a lot of the b-sides are forgettable instruments. the more i think about this guy he's kind of a one-trick pony but what a great trick.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 03:18 (eleven years ago) link

they are expensive on amazon, but if you read the descriptions, they are almost all mint condition, shrink-wrapped in original case
