Fabric/Fabriclive mix cd series S/D

the series itself seems middlebrow as hell and some of the other participants fill me with fear but the results justify on this evidence. (all i've heard.)

the Radioactive Man mix is excellent if you like tough, booming quasi-breaks electro. i agree with Matos on the John Peel mix.

my big surprise over the weekend was how much I enjoyed Fabric 6 - Tyler Stadius. like the promo says, it's a "hot, heavy trip, wrapped in percussion and drowned in echo". so it's very minimal, tribal deep house. most tracks are just an urgent two or three note bassline and congas, bongoes, shakers, kicks and snares under many layers of delay and reverb. what struck me most was how little seperates this style from DFA tracks like "dance to the underground" or their mix of "orange alert". really it's just a few elements: in the DFA tracks you get a chicken-scratchy guitar and in the Jay Tripwire tracks you have bleary deep house synth pads.

so yeah, the Tyler Stadius mix is surprising high-quality, even if the rhythm & sound outro feels tacked-on.

also James Lavelle's mix is excellent though I can't think of what to say about it other than Andy K's comments on allmusic are quite right.

That said I really like alot of them so they have sort of duped me I suppose.

i used to subscribe to them. got em super cheap. but i've given up. it was a luxury i can no longer aford.

the plumps mix is also mighty fine for your party breakbeat needs.

The Bent one is surprisingly high quality but I wonder how much my initial appreciation for it was based on not having heard Annie's "The Greatest Hit" before.

I agree with Ronan in that I instinctively want to dislike these albums; like, I'm sure I'm going to adore the Michael Mayer mix but there's something vaguely disquieting about tying him into the Fabric brand.

Sorry, what's the problem with the Fabric brand? Is it too parasitic or something?

I guess there's the issue of it being a 'more discerning' take on dance-culture than say, Ministry of Sound; despite essentially functioning in an identical 'corporate' manner.

But then, there's the upside of it representing a mutation of the superclub that actually comes off as sort of relevant. Plus, it's great to see Michael Mayer gaining some much needed exposure. I'd actually like to hear more Microhouse in the 'mainstream'...

Destroy: Doc Martin (horrible noodly deep house, badly mixed too), Slam (bog-standard tech-house, although it ends on a great note with UR's "Inspiration"), and especially The Amalgamation of Soundz, which is sleep-inducing even by the standards of chillout music.

to what degree is a purchase an endorsement? that is the tough question from all of this because you can easily have a MoS cd next to a fabric one in you collection and enjoy both. i really give cultural material a real exemption from that "purchase as endorsement" idea because cultural material takes longer to understand than, say, and SUV ;-)

do you think other series' of mix cds suffer from the same aristocratic nature (ie dj kicks)? also, what is the alternate approach? if fabric is a sort of aristocracy of cool than i agree about your problem, but, for Socrates' sake, i wonder why aving a series of mix cds that represent only one genre would not imply any sort of elitism or favoritism? is it because fabric is parasitic as Michael said?

It's pretty good - not exactly big, epic stompin choons, but it has its moments. Oddly, it was really hard to find - most shops has every other number in the series except 03. I couldn't work out if that was because it was really popular or they didn't bother stocking it...

(as an aside: has anybody heard the two anniversary mixes on classic? there's a one-disc mix by doc martin that looks ok and a two-disc mix by luke solomon and derrick carter that looks great but i wonder if it hasn't dated by now)

BUT - i have it on good authority from trusted friends that the mixing is good enough to (literally) make you weep.

so does anybody know?

only real duds i've heard are james lavelle and amalgamationz of sound...

Diplo's mixing is also occasionally a little weak. When he transitions from The Cure to Bombs Over Baghdad, the two songs are blatantly out of tune with each other and it's ugly.

I agree with Abbadavid that the Diplo one does sound like it would be good out, but not necessarily something you want to listen to a lot. That's why it's good they're cheap now! Mixes should be more disposable.

(So er ... why this thread, but never mind)

Love the Call Super mix (really like his album from a few years ago too but this is very different).

Had not heard the house version of Photek's "T'Raenon" before, it's very pretty. Kind of nerdishly amused by how the track sequencing implies that Photek leads with a breakbeat when in fact it's Bushwacka's (it's almost like a small joke about how much we have forgotten about 90s dance music).

would not surprise me if they don't release a tracklisting and just put it out.
and yeah, its a pretty bloody great way to end the physical series.

Burial/Kode9 and Craig Richards would be the most underwhelming closing salvo imaginable but it makes sense.

Suspect they'll continue putting mixes out after this but those CDs must be like dumping money into a landfill at this stage.

Given they only just got round to Sasha I wonder if they've got someone really big lined up for Fabric 100 though.

I wonder how many people subscribe? Brother-n-law subscribed for an age, to the extent that it felt like "a big thing" when he stopped. Like he'd *changed* or something.

I subscribed for a brief period but it was over a decade ago! The advent of downloadable mixes and especially the regular podcast ones really put a dent in the market

fabric vs fabriclive

is there that much of a difference really ?
I only have 19 of them, some fabric, some fabriclive, and never even really given the 'live' part much thought.

generally there's a genre split, although there are definite exceptions

fabric is more techno/house and fabriclive tends to have the drum and bass derived stuff combined with a grab bag of random people mixing

as an old man who has never been to the place, I guess that's why I have never understood the distinction.

Not doing it for me (didn't get on with Kode 9's DJ Kicks at all). Love that Claude Young remix of Jabobs Optical Stairway though. 37 tracks so no doubt it will only make a 90 second appearance tops.

I don't know if I'm mellowing in old age but I'm quite enjoying this. The Luke Slater drop is a fantastic moment.

I mean, it's not up there with DJ Q dropping a bassline remix of the Stingray theme tune but baby steps eh.

Listened to that the other day, very suited for an early spring - extremely pleasant and entirely unchallenging.

Yeah the Bonobo mix sounds pretty great when all you can see is blue sky.

I don't care about Bonobo as an artist at all (I always assumed he was kind of politely unchallenging, Four Tet with all the rough edges sanded off). But if Dixon had turned in this mix - which he quite easily could have - people would be falling over themselves to hosanna it.
