My top 15, based solely on artists in the Billboard albums and singles charts this week. None of these bands would make my 15 American band/artists of all time, but I'm glad they're all out there.

4)All-American Rejects
5)Red Hot Chili Peppers

Millar (Millar), Monday, 14 July 2003 22:55 (twenty years ago) link

I'm ignoring all pre-Beatles bands in order to allow a bit more freshness in my TOP 15 AMERICAN ARTISTS OF ALL TIME (WOO WOO WOO!). I'm counting Neil Young cuz he's done all of his rockin' in the US, NOT Canada. And I am NOT replacing Prince with the B-52's (despite Cosmic Thing being one of the best albums of all time). Unlike my last list, these are not in any particular order.

Velvet Underground
REM
Neil Young
Replacements
Stooges

di, your cyndi lauper love absolves you of your "Flame" love. I've had "True Colors" and the chorus of "Money Changes Everything" stuck in my head all day and I'm GLAD.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 14 July 2003 23:53 (twenty years ago) link

i forgot elvis - sorry!

"The Flame" is my third-favourite Cheap Trick song. (Mind you, I've only heard Budokan.) "Ghost Town" is good too.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 00:26 (twenty years ago) link

(Also, mind you, I haven't heard "The Flame" in a decade or so. I can still sing most of it though.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 00:27 (twenty years ago) link

She's Tight, He's A Whore, Dream Police, Gonna Raise Hell, Surrender, Southern Girls, Hot Love, Taxman Mr. Thief, Ooh La La, Clock Strikes Ten, I Want You To Want Me...must I go on, Sundar? MUST I GO ON???

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 00:31 (twenty years ago) link

Well, "Surrender" and "I Want You to Want Me" are #1 and 2. I haven't heard the rest of your list, except CST, which is apparently on Budokan but I don't remember it so I probably do prefer "The Flame".

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 01:08 (twenty years ago) link

Placebo are a British band. Brian Molko is ever so slightly american, but they made their bones in britain, and they are british citizens.

What Geir, why no Elvis in you list?

A Nairn (moretap), Sunday, 9 November 2003 01:23 (twenty years ago) link

Elvis is extremely overrated. And there wasn't a lot of great music before The Beatles at all. Most of the best American music hails either from the Californian golden age (Beach Boys, Turtles, Mamas & The Papas), from powerpop or from the current wave of underground psychedelic pop

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 9 November 2003 01:26 (twenty years ago) link
