I'm mainly thinking Search and Destroy here, although I'm curious about how the sweet harmonic Philly stuff gave way to the pre-disco Philadelphia International tracks.

The O'Jays are the heart and soul of Philly soul, for me, before and through the period of greatest success. The Delfonics are glorious too. Billy Paul's Me And Mrs Jones is a great record.

back to Philly. I don't think there's a definitive Philly Soul collection. The 3-disc Legacy box from the late 90s is a decent place to start, esp. the first disc which collects various pre-CBS Gamble & Huff singles. The classic hits from 1972-75 are there, also available on 1000 or so budget compilations. But the set stops in 1976 when Philadelphia International Records left the CBS fold. True there was a drop in quality at this point as the high-disco era began but there are a lot of lost Philly classics from the late 70s, from "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" and solo Teddy P onto to more arcane pleasures like Dexter Wansel.
I've got an 8-CD Philadelphia comp than covers the waterfront, a German import from 1989 that was one of the first CDs I bought. On Knight Records if you can find it...
But even that set doesn't include Thom Bell's life-changing work w/The Spinners who recorded for Atlantic. Fuck record companies.
Apparently Gamble & Huff are semi-reclusive and not esp. interested in setting the record straight so to speak. Someday, someway, plz.
