im not sure how people reflect on him now on ilx, but he has done many things to combat racism, defend abortion rights for women and given models places to live (and many have stated he has never hit on him). save the ire for weinstein imo

For a smear article on him it’s surprising how most of those are mild indirect accusations. For a man surrounded by sex and scandals most of his life I mean. Those all sound tame in comparison to what has been uncovered in the entertainment industry in the past years.

I wouldn’t go as far as call him a feminist but it can be argued that Playboy did indeed help normalize and transiition into the sexual freedom revolution from the 60’s onwards, taking down taboos along the way and it was somewhat progressive at the time.

I don’t know how much Hefner contributed to it but in general it looks like he wasn’t a creep (or not nearly enough as someone in his position would be expected to be) and he never compromised his vision of this elegant, bachelor magazine even when sales were affected for the less classy porn magazines. I mean regardless of the nudes they actually had some interesting articles and its ambitions went beyond porn.

Playboy seems almost artistic compared to the rest, I guess that’s why way into the 21st century, being a playmate was not seen with bad eyes and some celebrities didn’t think too much about getting nude for the magazine.

the articles are like 70 percent of the magazine, and they are very liberal and anti trump and the one thing i like about playboy is it respects the inherent intelligence of women - women fucking rule, not just surface level beauty but god damn beautiful minds

I mean I share Ross’ taste in Viceland shows so I don’t want to rag on him but was he just, like, really feeling Playboy atm and decided to see what ILX had to say on the subject

Hugh Hefner helped mainstream pornography, albeit in a very light form, and I’m not sure that’s been good for the culture in the long run

He commodifed the sexual revolution more than he promoted it. The vision of sexuality his magazine promoted wasn’t really egalitarian

to me hef is really a rolling maleness/masculinity avatar. playboy was about a certain image of the cultured and sophisticated man - i don't even know if it was a false image, hef might well have been like that, but playboy certainly perpetuated the lie that most men are like that, and that very airbrushed, glamorous take on sexuality. i don't think all male sexuality is hustler sexuality, meat-grinder porn or whatever, but in 2018 the playboy approach strikes me as a bit of a blind alley; i find the present "customs"-based porn subculture far more interesting.
