I'm trying to work out whether or not this is worse than him off the Lock-Up, who, despite being aural mogadon, does at least seem like a fairly pleasant young man...

Why is Zane Lowe held in such high regard within media circles? I've never heard a a more insincere and patronising presenter in my life. He is the worst kind of "Fluff" Freeman come Johnnie Walker, music is only for boys, misogynist tosspot I've come across in my 14 years of actively loving music.

Give Lamacq his due, I couldn't even attempt to put a figure on the amount of toilet gigs I've seen him at in London. Whilst his music taste might suck, and boy does it, at least he's fundamentally one of us, a sad fuckin' freak spending too much money on music, gigs and beer and not getting enough sex.

I've never seen Zane Lowe or Colin McMurray at a gig because I don't get to swan around in the VIP section of Shepherd's Bush Empire or The Brixton Academy. These guys are chasing fame rather than new music and that's why they're so whack.

I can't account for the last 8 or 9 years of The Evening Session, I never agreed with Lamacqs tastes as a writer so rarely gave his show a chance. It also had Jo muthafucking Whiley rabbiting on about some Hoxton bullshit. However, Lamacq always stuck to his roots and I think most people will regret him going because there are very few music lovers still left in the mainstream UK broadcast media.

That's probably the main reason why Mike Davis might possibly have had a shout, in that his knowledge of 'underground' and 'independent' music does extend a bit beyond "Wow, Flaming Lips, Yeah!"

sixteen years pass...

Cause we obviously need to hear Symposium again...

some music i love in there but also a lot of stuff that should be left to molder in the compost mound of history. i have actually revisited symposium's discography quite extensively lately by the medium of youtube and hoo boy. it's bad

i mean you’re not wrong

As much as I can't stand Lamacq, he did play some things I liked in the 90s, also a lot of things I didn't like, there are some good things on here but also a lot of mediocre pap, so much like the Evening Session I won't bother listening to it. There could be a very good compilation made in this vein by somebody else.

i owned a symposium cd circa 1998 and enjoyed the music therein. i hadn't heard them or thought about them for years but was reminded of them for some reason i can't account for. after hearing one song and discovering how bad it was i went on a bit of an irony soaked binge

In '97 a girl I liked who generally had very good taste in music recommended Symposium, I got one single, was not hugely impressed but thought it was ok, revisiting it now, yeah, it's bad. iirc they lost all their cool points when it turned out the singer was a practicing christian, also turned out the girl I liked was one too, so maybe this is all making sense now.

the website that link is on has one of the most poorly worded slogans I've ever seen

"the box set and reissue music site for fans who love holding the music in their hands"

Terry Major-Ball Will Tell You (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 22:54 (five years ago) link

"the box set and reissue music site for overfocussed fans who become instantly psychotic when the Australia only edit of their favourite Kim Wilde 12 inch remix perplexingly isn't included on the 18 disc box set and therefore all record companies are the devil incarnate"

I used to love the Salad tune on that compilation tbf

I went to the '97 NME tour gig in Cardiff which was rife with Lamaq fodder - Symposium, 3 Colours Red, Tiger and Geneva. Geneva were actually really good from what I recall, although somehow Tiger were headlining.

I'm pretty sure this gig may have been a turning point in my falling out of love with indie and getting heavily into raving for a decade looking back.

raise my chicken finger (Willl), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 23:56 (five years ago) link

From that lineup I would rate Tiger as still brilliant, other three somewhere between forgettable and awful (Geneva I liked at the time, revisiting their releases has changed my mind I'm afraid)

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 17 January 2019 11:13 (five years ago) link

Oh, and those NME tours had rotating headliners.

Effectively Big Jim with a beard. (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 17 January 2019 13:46 (five years ago) link

2008 was the one I went to, I wanted to see The Ting Tings but my friends took forever to do predrinks and we missed them. I spent the night in a huff by the bar, hiding in the toilet and befriending people in the smoking section even though I don't smoke, because am I fuck ever surrending my time and energy to "Joe Lean And The Jing Jang Jong"

my biggest regret in life is that I stuck with the people I met in uni and spent years hanging around crap indie discos instead of making new pals and going to places playing UK funky and r&b

Version 2:

"the box set and reissue music site for overfocussed fans who become instantly psychotic when the Australia only edit of their favourite Kim Wilde 12 inch remix which was included on the 18 disc box set but six years later is reissued cheaply as a one-disc Australia 12" singles collection, and demands their money back"
