I've been here in OC since the band called themselves the Shrinky Dinks, I've had to put up with their smug bullshit too many years now, I hate their fucking music and image and any bastard who says crap like this to me gets all the shit they deserve.

I, however, mind neither beach parties nor summer fun. :-)

i suppose if you lived in the pop-punk capitol of the world you may possibly grow tired of pick scrapes, guitar kicks and songs that rhyme 'girl' with 'world'. however, in the land of thinly veiled stoner jam rock that is montreal, liking sugar ray, sum 41 (or any punk band with rap parts), LFO and the entire 94 lookout! roster is imperative.

ps. i also start lots of fights at parties by stating "bob dylan is the biggest bullshit artist of the 20th century"

i have no real way of backing that up but it usually makes people so blind with rage that no argument ensues anyways

If Sublime had more interesting sounds, I'd like them more (I do enjoy "What I Got" and "Santeria," so there ya go). I think living in OC has affected yer ears on all this.

You could say that about a lot of bands, though! And in some cases it's warranted, doubtless. I don't sense that Sugar Ray and never have. I sense a bunch of flailing bullshitters. McGrath enjoys being a prick, based on the stories I've heard, and he's welcome to it.

I'm not much of a fan of him either.

Prepackaged, presold, accept-no-alternate-interpretations 'fun' in all of life -- tour groups with perky tour guides hitting all the 'sights,' going to summer camp and doing 'activities,' whatever you like -- is one of the most obnoxious things ever. It may not be evil, but it sure is a corrosive timewaster. 'Fun,' however defined, happens as it does, where you find it and how you find it. Those are the memories that linger for me the longest, with groups of people, out of them, whatever. Don't tell me you're a 'fun' band, prove it! And if you fail with me, that's life and subjective opinion.

Heh. They never hurt. ;-) But it's interesting, I haven't really gotten thrilled by any UK scene in the past few years aside from garage, and that only to the extent I get to hear various singles. And keep in mind one of my favorite ever bands, with an aesthetic and grace of approach that never grows tired, are the Walkabouts, and neither UK accents nor radiator hums are part of their vision of things. ;-)

I have a feeling you won't like my upcoming review in the voice, that's for sure (I'm not telling whut its about...).

No need to fret, here's where I admit I don't really read the Voice or many other music publications at all these days! ;-) Most new music I've found via the joy of shared mp3s. It's odd, though, since I wouldn't mind writing for the Voice at all.

DDD's point is a good one, though, about why and how elements can attract. 'Mid tempo party rock' is, well, dull to my ears. Very dull, generally speaking, comfort food that's not very thrilling. I prefer pop apocalypse over a slow grind...

I saw a thing on some TV programme a few weeks ago where someone said 'Sugar Gay' somewhere on the street where Mark from Sugar Ray was within earshot. I think it was outside of some award show. What followed was hysterical. "Who said that? It was you wasn't it? It was you! You fucking dipshit! You little man! You insignificant piece of shit!" etc etc, all the while Mark pointing at some teenager, almost threatening to hit him.

'Pop apocalypse' = 'wow, WHAT THE FUCK?' as opposed to, 'Oh, okay.' I am a sucker for something that sounds world-stompingly huge or disjointed as opposed to easy-going good times when it comes to the charts. I'm keeping this intentionally vague because it should cover all sorts of musical bases, but admittedly something like "Party Hard" goes against this because it's certainly aiming to sound pretty damn big but I just think falls flat in general.

I'm certain that there is at least one small midwestern college town where people still gather at a local watering hole on a Friday night to see the local Sugar Ray cover band (who also occasionaly perform a sprinkling of Matchbox 20 and Cake tunes to mix things up), almost as if the last twenty years never happened at all.

But now those kids are listening to their parents music.

I stopped going to a bar because they always had a cover band that did the Sugar Ray/Cake/M20/etc. '90s set but all in the style of Sublime.

Wow, I can't believe I was so spot-on with the half-joking fictional scenario I painted. And yet I'm still disappointed at myself for leaving Sublime out of the mix.

90s cover bands in the Sugar Ray/Cake/M20 nexus are very easy to find on a Friday night in my small american city

(I think I was basing this upon my own experience wherein the last act I saw in my own midwestern college town before leaving in '07 was a RHCP cover band.)

one thing I remember growing up is that 60s & 70s nostalgia was very popular, during summer vacation I'd watch old Hanna-Barbara cartoons, Gilligan's Island, and game shows like The Price is Right that were rooted in a bygone era. obviously it was very clear that this stuff was supposed to appeal to your parents but it was pretty much all that was on outside of infomercials and soap operas.

nowadays when I go work out there's always a station playing Friends, which is as old today as Happy Days was when I was growing up, and I wonder if there's a whole generation of kids watching this and chuckling whenever they see like, a landline phone or something.

recently I hosted a poker game & made a playlist of tunes that I figured the other guys would appreciate, when playing it back it kinda struck me that a lot of the stuff I picked was either from the 90s or had a lot of the same hallmarks as that music. and yeah one of the songs I picked was "Someday" which I figured was a bit corny but that was the one that made people sit up and go, "holy shit, Sugar Ray! I used to love this song!" and yeah that's when I realized a huge chunk of your personality is forever gonna be attached to whatever was popular when you were 12
