Falls Apart and Answer the Phone were nice, catchy power pop. Top 40 has certainly done worse.

Classic. Unabashed and fun-loving and makes my ears swim and smile.

classic classic classic
i sometimes say at parties "saying you don't like sugar ray is like saying you don't like beach parties and summer fun. if you think you don't like sugar ray, it's because you have never actually listened to the tunes. you're lying to me and to yourself."
then loads of of ex-goth college hipsters say stuff like "i actually don't like beach parties and i hate summer"
and then i throw their roomates jamiroquai cd in the fish tank

i have every morning on 45 although i much prefer 'all these things' or whatever it's called.

God I fucking HATE fun!

"Every Morning" = superdooperclassic. Should I mention OPM* now?

*No, not O_______ P_____ M_______, the band, silly.

saying you don't like sugar ray is like saying you don't like beach parties and summer fun.

I've been here in OC since the band called themselves the Shrinky Dinks, I've had to put up with their smug bullshit too many years now, I hate their fucking music and image and any bastard who says crap like this to me gets all the shit they deserve.

I, however, mind neither beach parties nor summer fun. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 09:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

That singer's face is enough for me to never want to hear their music. Their new material will be produced by the Neptunes, however, so I might have to re-evaluate.

i suppose if you lived in the pop-punk capitol of the world you may possibly grow tired of pick scrapes, guitar kicks and songs that rhyme 'girl' with 'world'. however, in the land of thinly veiled stoner jam rock that is montreal, liking sugar ray, sum 41 (or any punk band with rap parts), LFO and the entire 94 lookout! roster is imperative.

ps. i also start lots of fights at parties by stating "bob dylan is the biggest bullshit artist of the 20th century"

i have no real way of backing that up but it usually makes people so blind with rage that no argument ensues anyways

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

What exactly in the music (not the image or whatever) is smug about Sugar Ray? Now keep in mind I think pre-1459 Sugar Ray is D, except for Fly. But since then I think the joy I hear is pretty genuine.

Anthony Miccio, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think it's the joy of them going, "Ah! If we do THIS instead of THAT we'll be rich and famous!" Also, seeing as how I think Sublime were a curse upon the nation, an even dumber and more smoothed out version of same is my own little circle of hell.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

Um. So Stones rips and country-disco were their big moneymaker ideas? I'm of the viewpoint that whatever there motivation was to ditch all their pre-"Fly" horseshit was, I'm thankful. They sound way too giddy in their sonic adventures for me to assume its purely crass capitalism. Proof for me his how happy McGrath looked vamping as a Duranee in the "When It's Over" video. He clearly enjoys this shit. Also, Sugar Ray's glee in Australia on that Music In High Places show is proof they're pro-fun, even if GASP! they're pro-money.

If Sublime had more interesting sounds, I'd like them more (I do enjoy "What I Got" and "Santeria," so there ya go). I think living in OC has affected yer ears on all this.

Anthony Miccio, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

I forgot to finish a thought in my last post. If Sugar Ray is the sound of selling out I wish more bands would. If only Incubus would focus on the girl-baiting ballads and stop all those horrific attempts at "rocking." If only the Backstreet Boys would bring back their dance beats and stop trying for soulful "authenticity." I'm all for bands finding, as Mark McGrath puts it, their "sound." And is Beck any less smug?

Anthony Miccio, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

They sound way too giddy in their sonic adventures for me to assume its purely crass capitalism.

You could say that about a lot of bands, though! And in some cases it's warranted, doubtless. I don't sense that Sugar Ray and never have. I sense a bunch of flailing bullshitters. McGrath enjoys being a prick, based on the stories I've heard, and he's welcome to it.

I think living in OC has affected yer ears on all this.

I would hate them were I in deepest Kazakhstan.

I'm all for bands finding, as Mark McGrath puts it, their "sound."

Oh good god. Their 'sound' was becoming the new Jimmy goddamn Buffet and one was plenty enough! Fucking fuck.

And is Beck any less smug?

I'm not much of a fan of him either.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

And my own little standalone thought -- the whole 'fun' thing, if you like, which has been a lingering issue on this board for a while now. It's become a thoroughly obnoxious shorthand and attempt at locking in a somehow unassailable critical mindset. I'm not blaming you on this, Anthony, I'm just considering a larger situation. Obviously a lot of the references have been joking and I'm glad of that. But more than once I'm sensing a predetermined idea of "If you don't like this thing which I consider fun and enjoyable, then you're a stupid stick in the mud who doesn't like any sort of fun at all." Like I indicated upthread with my comment on 'summer fun' et al, I don't buy this in the slightest, and I don't think anybody else does either, really, which is why it gets my goat to see it.

Prepackaged, presold, accept-no-alternate-interpretations 'fun' in all of life -- tour groups with perky tour guides hitting all the 'sights,' going to summer camp and doing 'activities,' whatever you like -- is one of the most obnoxious things ever. It may not be evil, but it sure is a corrosive timewaster. 'Fun,' however defined, happens as it does, where you find it and how you find it. Those are the memories that linger for me the longest, with groups of people, out of them, whatever. Don't tell me you're a 'fun' band, prove it! And if you fail with me, that's life and subjective opinion.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

I definitely understand your antipathy about the fun aesthetic. But I really don't hear these offensive things about Sugar Ray you complain about ON the songs. There's a million anecdotes about them being crass and obnoxious and assholes in real life, but you haven't mentioned one element of one song that represents this. How can I not assume your judging their musical work based on prejudices formed by their non-musical exploits?

Anthony Miccio, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, refer to the Sublime and Jimmy Buffet references above -- that's what I get from their earlier singles, their later ones have been so trudgingly anonymous that I haven't wanted to investigate further. Hell, they're one of the most unfun bands ever on that front! "Great, music that makes me think of an MTV spring break special, can I go home now?" One of the easiest ways to offend me musically is to promise a lot and deliver zilch. And if their latest album does in fact feature a 'Weezer ballad,' then shoot me now, because I hate them even more! ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

thank yas. Now I can just assume we look for different things in music (I can safely assume british accents and distorted radiator hums do it for ya?) rather than that you're upset that goths get crap in high school or something. I have a feeling you won't like my upcoming review in the voice, that's for sure (I'm not telling whut its about...).

Anthony Miccio, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

I can safely assume british accents and distorted radiator hums do it for ya?

Heh. They never hurt. ;-) But it's interesting, I haven't really gotten thrilled by any UK scene in the past few years aside from garage, and that only to the extent I get to hear various singles. And keep in mind one of my favorite ever bands, with an aesthetic and grace of approach that never grows tired, are the Walkabouts, and neither UK accents nor radiator hums are part of their vision of things. ;-)

I have a feeling you won't like my upcoming review in the voice, that's for sure (I'm not telling whut its about...).

No need to fret, here's where I admit I don't really read the Voice or many other music publications at all these days! ;-) Most new music I've found via the joy of shared mp3s. It's odd, though, since I wouldn't mind writing for the Voice at all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, and for what it's worth, garage is endlessly incredibly fun for me! Sticky's "More Weed!" might still be my single of the year. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

what bugs me is that most people around me automatically dismiss sugar ray. i make this argument mostly to show people that they don't (and in alot of cases, never) listen objectively, which is an easy thing to do. When I realised I liked sugar ray, it was like the biggest epiphany i had ever had and the most objective listening i had ever done. i love classical guitar, mid tempo party rock with an element of pop/rap, decent melodies and general fun loving attitude of the band so why not love the band? their look is ridiculous and they gain me 0 scene points but their songs are like no other party rock i've ever heard. smash mouth gets close.

ddd, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 18:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

righto, ddd. Also I don't like the Jimmy Buffet reference cuz I've never heard so many need overdubbed production whatevers on a Buffet track. The vocals that fade in-and-out are part of what makes "Someday" so beautiful.

sugar ray = gay

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 18:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

It would truly be hysterical is the next album was titled Sugar Gay.

Anthony Miccio, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 18:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

My respect for the band might increase. ;-) My Jimmy Buffet comparison is based on the conviction that they could cover "Margaritaville" without much worry -- which in of itself worries me.

DDD's point is a good one, though, about why and how elements can attract. 'Mid tempo party rock' is, well, dull to my ears. Very dull, generally speaking, comfort food that's not very thrilling. I prefer pop apocalypse over a slow grind...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 19:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

what's pop apocalypse? I've got my guesses but I want to hear it from you before I start dismissing at windmills. ;)

Anthony Miccio, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 19:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

It would truly be hysterical is the next album was titled Sugar Gay.

I saw a thing on some TV programme a few weeks ago where someone said 'Sugar Gay' somewhere on the street where Mark from Sugar Ray was within earshot. I think it was outside of some award show. What followed was hysterical. "Who said that? It was you wasn't it? It was you! You fucking dipshit! You little man! You insignificant piece of shit!" etc etc, all the while Mark pointing at some teenager, almost threatening to hit him.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 19:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, if you read groupiecentral supposedly Mr. McGrath has some issues in that department. That said, I would love to be able to yell "you little man! you insignificant piece of shit!" from a red carpet someday.

Anthony Miccio, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 19:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Man, Ryan Adams has a challenger now in the 'give it a rest' department! Even I hadn't heard that one yet!

'Pop apocalypse' = 'wow, WHAT THE FUCK?' as opposed to, 'Oh, okay.' I am a sucker for something that sounds world-stompingly huge or disjointed as opposed to easy-going good times when it comes to the charts. I'm keeping this intentionally vague because it should cover all sorts of musical bases, but admittedly something like "Party Hard" goes against this because it's certainly aiming to sound pretty damn big but I just think falls flat in general.

I'm certain that there is at least one small midwestern college town where people still gather at a local watering hole on a Friday night to see the local Sugar Ray cover band (who also occasionaly perform a sprinkling of Matchbox 20 and Cake tunes to mix things up), almost as if the last twenty years never happened at all.

I stopped going to a bar because they always had a cover band that did the Sugar Ray/Cake/M20/etc. '90s set but all in the style of Sublime.

not enough new jamminess on the radio, what can you expect really

maffew12, Tuesday, 26 November 2019 14:32 (four years ago) link

one thing I remember growing up is that 60s & 70s nostalgia was very popular, during summer vacation I'd watch old Hanna-Barbara cartoons, Gilligan's Island, and game shows like The Price is Right that were rooted in a bygone era. obviously it was very clear that this stuff was supposed to appeal to your parents but it was pretty much all that was on outside of infomercials and soap operas.

nowadays when I go work out there's always a station playing Friends, which is as old today as Happy Days was when I was growing up, and I wonder if there's a whole generation of kids watching this and chuckling whenever they see like, a landline phone or something.

recently I hosted a poker game & made a playlist of tunes that I figured the other guys would appreciate, when playing it back it kinda struck me that a lot of the stuff I picked was either from the 90s or had a lot of the same hallmarks as that music. and yeah one of the songs I picked was "Someday" which I figured was a bit corny but that was the one that made people sit up and go, "holy shit, Sugar Ray! I used to love this song!" and yeah that's when I realized a huge chunk of your personality is forever gonna be attached to whatever was popular when you were 12

frogbs, Tuesday, 26 November 2019 15:19 (four years ago) link

One of my strongest teenage memories is the beach trip my friends and I took post-high school graduation, where I must have heard "Someday" like 6+ times over those few days. It perfectly captured the mix of joy and melancholy I was feeling as I spent the last couple months with my closest friends before we all went different ways. I couldn't come up with a bigger cliche. so frogbs otm
