yah larry davis is fucking great. this show rules. better than seinfeld even.

there were a couple of golden episodes last season. the ones i saw last night had a few flashes of brilliance, but he ruins his best jokes by explaining them, instead of letting you share in his miserable moments of realization

We're still waiting to get the third season here in Toronto. I heard the writing started to slide a bit though. T/F?

may pang (maypang), Saturday, 10 January 2004 19:21 (twenty years ago) link

Well i've only seen the 5 episodes they screened on BBC2 i'm hoping they'll relent and show it all

pete s, Saturday, 10 January 2004 19:23 (twenty years ago) link

it actually is not scripted, all improvised from a story outline.

saza bob, Saturday, 10 January 2004 19:26 (twenty years ago) link

Ok, so I heard that the basic outlines started to slide a bit.

may pang (maypang), Saturday, 10 January 2004 19:27 (twenty years ago) link

this season's premise (that his wife is allowing him to sleep with another woman as a 10th anniversary present) is completely absurd, and the opener wasn't as funny as it should have been. But the next episode looked better.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Saturday, 10 January 2004 19:35 (twenty years ago) link

yeah that 10th anniversary episode was nonsense...the whole doctors examining room phone thing hurt my head. hope it gets better...

so yes so far the basic outlines have slipped may pang.

saza bob, Saturday, 10 January 2004 19:39 (twenty years ago) link

It's in its fourth season now, right?

may pang (maypang), Saturday, 10 January 2004 19:41 (twenty years ago) link

I didn't know there was even a second season.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 10 January 2004 20:18 (twenty years ago) link

this is is the fourth season, yes.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Sunday, 11 January 2004 08:11 (twenty years ago) link

The "wife letting him sleep with someone else" premise is a little silly, but not as silly as it sounds on paper. The deal is, when they decided to get married, she said, "What, are you nervous about never sleeping with anyone else? Tell you what. You marry me, and you can sleep with someone else as a 10th anniversary present." So he mentions it as a joke, but it's pushed into reality by the fact that she says she doesn't think he can do it, anyway. So now it's a challenge.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 11 January 2004 08:16 (twenty years ago) link

And besides, you have to put the completely absurd aside. All of the plots are incredibly contrived, just as they were on Seinfeld. It's kind of Larry David's calling card.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 11 January 2004 08:18 (twenty years ago) link

The best bits are the little moments between him and his wife. His wife is sitting up in bed and Larry comes out of the bathroom:

"I think I found the perfect pair of socks. They're not quite white, because you don't want white..."

She shoots him a look of pointed boredom.

"Is this boring to you? Because if someone said to me they'd found the perfect socks, I'd say, 'Really? Where'd you get them? WHat are they like?'"

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 11 January 2004 08:23 (twenty years ago) link

Watched this for the first time today, hilarious. Why why why are all the best shows only on cable?

dleone (dleone), Sunday, 18 January 2004 00:24 (twenty years ago) link

don weiner, Monday, 19 January 2004 04:05 (twenty years ago) link

A brilliant stroke is having Ben Stiller play himself as a sort of flip side to Larry David - both characters are jerks, but Ben knows what the rules are (the "no gifts" thing, being polite about the bedazzled sports sweatshirts, etc.). The second episode of this season had me cringing the entire time...how does Larry have *any* friends?

Favorite moments:
Larry commenting inappropriately on Mary in the Nativity scene.
Cheri Oteri singing the Looney Tunes song and mentioning that her suitcase doesn't have wheels.
The restaurant swear-fest. (this was a lot funnier than it probably should have been)
Larry's confused look, watching club soda and salt being applied to his wife's blouse.

The first season just came out on DVD - we watched them all yesterday and the day before. I was falling over laughing - now of course I wish the rest of it was on DVD, but no, I guess we have to wait a year for the 2nd season... We don't have the premium cable channels, so we do this with Sopranos and Six Feet Under as well - a feast for a few days, and then a whole year to wait for more (and avoid spoilers if we can).

I thought this was the best episode for a while and I hope we see Richard Lewis again before the finale.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 5 March 2024 14:21 (one month ago) link

feel like the last few seasons have all been like that - first few episodes drag, then it gets good after that

definitely seems like he's gonna re-do the last episode of Seinfeld - I think every episode so far has had a pretty overt reference to the show (Ted Danson and the pen this week) - also Larry saying "I could go to jail for a year!" kinda gives it away

frogbs, Tuesday, 5 March 2024 14:30 (one month ago) link

very sad about Richard Lewis.

sometime during the 2000s, Spirit airlines had celebrities record the airline safety information that would be played before takeoff. Richard Lewis was one of them and it was so hilarious they even allowed his to be played. I remember the part during the "in case of a water landing" section and he makes a crack that was essentially "you're dead if that scenario even happened."

its got to end with some link between him getting free of Irma but then going to jail or having to chose between supporting Irma or jail, and him choosing going to jail.

final pay off will be him in jail with the guy he gave the jacket to in episode 2, who hates him now....

except RFK wasn't running when this was written/filmed, also I don't think it's really well known that Cheryl is married to him? but yeah it's pretty strange.

last episode was kind of strange in that you had Conan playing himself, but Steve Buscemi also pops up *not* playing himself, although he's not a character in the show

frogbs, Wednesday, 27 March 2024 21:32 (three weeks ago) link

RFK WAS being a weird anti vaxxer covid conspiracy guy during filming tho

kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 27 March 2024 21:39 (three weeks ago) link

true but most people didn't even know there *was* a Robert Kennedy then, much less that he was married to Cheryl from Curb

I'm definitely very curious how it's all gonna end. obviously Seinfeld's finale was considered a dud which I know is a bit of a sore spot for Larry, so its kind of interesting how hard he's telegraphing that the exact same thing is gonna happen in Curb. in fact he's been telegraphing it so hard that I'm convinced there's gonna be some major bait and switch here. at first I thought he's gonna die somehow in the finale but they already did that way back in like Season 5 right?

tbh I'm not sure how Seinfeld should've ended either, dealing with finality in a show where the characters never change and a bunch of plots just go unresolved (didnt Kramer get a girl pregnant in one episode and it was just never mentioned again?) must be pretty difficult. though I kind of wonder, did people think it was that disappointing at the time? I mean just binging through the show it's pretty lame but at the time bringing back all those characters and catchphrases must've been pretty cool.

frogbs, Wednesday, 27 March 2024 22:20 (three weeks ago) link

I liked the premise of the Seinfeld finale indicting the cast as villains all along but the execution came off as a pandering catchphrase-laden victory lap, but the fatwa season inverted that premise (Larry being tried and judged to be the hero the entire time... in the eyes of Iran's secret police!) and I think that worked much better!

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 27 March 2024 22:52 (three weeks ago) link

Right and that one brought back a bunch of minor characters so I can’t imagine he'll do that again

I thought the idea of Young Larry becoming a huge hit was a good premise for the final season but it hasn’t been mentioned since episode 1

frogbs, Wednesday, 27 March 2024 23:30 (three weeks ago) link

Best to treat it as a sitcom that happens to have season-long arcs, rather than expecting in to culminate in some multi-season culmination.

paisley got boring (Eazy), Thursday, 28 March 2024 00:26 (three weeks ago) link

ok so one thing that kinda bothered me about this one was Larry needing "clearance" to talk to Conan, when in reality if anything it would be the reverse

but it got me wondering how big a celebrity Larry is in the Curb universe - obviously the show Curb doesn't exist within Curb so isn't it likely no one but Seinfeld nerds would actually know who Larry David was? so how does a show like Young Larry get made? would anyone watch a sitcom about Chuck Lorre's childhood?

frogbs, Thursday, 28 March 2024 03:31 (three weeks ago) link

all caught up for the finale tonight, these plotlines are getting increasingly contrived and I can't help but notice how much they resemble the King's Quest games. so you have to take the masseuse to meet Bruce Springsteen in order to get her to drop a sexual harrassment claim? alright, whatever

frogbs, Monday, 8 April 2024 14:12 (one week ago) link

yeah that would’ve been great. also missed opportunity for an extra seinfeld finale tie-in to have their plane nearly crash (would’ve been accidentally topical too with the boeing stuff in the news)

leon watching seinfeld was the funniest

wonder what larry will do next, if anything. maybe another movie?

flopson, Monday, 8 April 2024 17:02 (one week ago) link

I thought when it was revealed that Leon was watching Seinfeld that he would get all the way up to the finale, come up with some really dumb idea of how they could've gotten out of it, only to have it work in the Curb universe. or it would backfire tremdendously.

frogbs, Monday, 8 April 2024 17:56 (one week ago) link

Yeah, that makes a ton of sense, as a way to have that Leon-watching-Seinfeld work pay off in a plot way. The plots this season were so sloppy in that way (someone mentioned the zipper, too), but hey, still fun.

After 12 seasons, many viewers lament the passing of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” Larry David’s sour, pseudo bio-series. I’m not a fan, because Larry truly is the self-righteous, snobby, self-loathing, narcissistic ass he portrays. That opinion is informed by an outdoor afternoon…
