It definitely seems like the "grandmama" of like 5,000 other card games. It's off-putting to know that you have to play it for a few months before you can even play "normally" with other bridge fiends, otherwise people will be sending you all kinds of coded signals that you'll just totally whiff on and the other person will want to kill you. I convinced Matos and Paul and felicity to play a stripped-down, domino-based version of this game called "Texas 42," or just "42" once, and it was a hoot. I suggest it for those who are edging their way into this pristine, Kubrickian world of calculations and double-dares.

one year passes...
by sheer force of will, I've decided I like playing bridge now. it turns out there is a small contingent of bridge players here on ILX.
I have been learning using the Tricky Bridge app, which has a tutorial series where you play through a cutesy storyline about bridge-playing robots. It teaches the basics, plus some introductions to bidding conventions. I paid ten bucks for a month of unlimited duplicates. Highly recommend.
It differs from other apps in that this app, during the bidding phase, tells you how all bids should be interpreted--just in the past few days, I've started to internalize SAYC, and have been having a wonderful time getting my ass handed to me in duplicates.
