there are always rumours flying about, and sometimes even full page
adverts in the likes of private eye, about auctions of siezed police
stuff, ex govt vehicles, surplus, the lot. i have always been tempted
by the idea, i imagine the competition can be pretty fierce. the
media advertisment is for a company which distributes the dates and
locations of these auctions, and for quite a price! they must be good
for something...
the one big consideration about any place that
distributes anything at below average prices is that of provenance. i
have heard of people aquiring a sound system from a police auction,
and that is something which i would really like, but somewhere in the
country some like minded individual has had their rig confiscated,
more than likely through defying laws that i do not support or even
am prepared to live by.
just one example, and of course govt
surplus is fine by me (just look in my wardrobe). i suppose if you
don't buy it, some other bugger will, but i'm sure the thought of
supporting what is broadly referred to as the system would haunt me
just a bit. hell, the thought of some irate london crew coming to
reclaim their system ain't too appealing either.
what's the deal
with auctions in america regarding ethically sound parameters? why is
the shit being sold anyway? for that matter, nude, where is
westchester county? i have some picture in my mind of rugged land,
covered with thick swathes of autumnal deciduous forrest, portraying
every shade from green to brown, low clear sun filtering through
shimmering leaves with dazzling kalaedoscopic shafts. wooden houses
with elegant balconies and verandas and flaking faded white
paintwork.
well, i've been thinking about massachusettes recently,
if that explains my gushing prose on random american locations.
explains the subject matter. doesn't excuse the prose. god! auctions,
wasn't that what this was supposed to be about? i don't know, can't
get the wood.

there's that big auction place in the Bronx that i always see
whenever I take the train to White Plains. i'm kinda leery of that
sorta place (figure there's some sort of rip-off scam going on, not
to mention that it's in the Bronx).
on the other hand, one of the paralegals at my firm got a BMW at one
of those police auctions (or he claimed that he did).
seemed to work OK, and it was nice-looking. bright red, though,
practically screamed "pimp car!" or "Tony Montana-
mobile!"

one month passes...
I wonder... if the cars are from criminals.. Don't you think they
would have put something in place 'cause they figured it could get
taken from them? And as for houses, would you really want to live
somewhere that a criminal used to? God knows how he bugged the place
and maybe the person is exploiting whoever buys the house and you're
contributing to the already non-existent legal system in this
country. Who'd want to buy O.J.'s house?

Westchester is North East of New York City, in New York state. quite scenic and reasonably well-off looking. there's a village round there where the Clintons etc have holiday homes.
