Argos is wonderful. I love the store checker device, I've never managed yet to get an item come up when tapping in random numbers. One day I will succead.

you refer, of course, to the Canadian Football League's Toronto Argonauts (commonly: "ARRRRRRRRRRRRRR - GOS!").

They do not = love.

I have to buy a friend's wedding present for Saturday from a list at Argos. Probably the only things left will be hideously expensive. Aargh!

I quite like Argos, really. When they got the computerised queuing system with the TV screens in I new we were entering a brave new world. Of course the last thing I bought from them (headphones) fell apart after a week, but that's my fault for not buying the cheapest (= sturdiest) headphones they have as usual.

I once spent a night in Argos (the town in Greece, that is). Ally, I think everything on her wedding list will be gone by now - we'll probably have to go somewhere else.

Madchen, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Argos is the best place to buy cheap electrical stuff. OK, so you don't actually get to hear/see desired items until you get out of the shop but you are at least spared clueless Dixon's/Comet/Curry's salespeople trying to foist something you don't want or need on you.

Argos rocks because when you're little and you're planning what you want for Christmas (this happens in about August/September) Argos is like a handy reference guide.

They also do those ACE adverts with loads of bright colours and OK, so it's the Quo but the adverts ACE.

Argos sells clothes now. If they start selling food as well then I'M NEVER SHOPPING ANYWHERE ELSE.

Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick. (rifle past Action Man pages) Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick. Pass catalogue to mother. No need to write to Santa. Hey presto!

I need a kettle, but I'm too busy at work to go and get one. Would any of you kind people like to go and buy me a dark green Morphy Richards kettle with all the trimmings, and I'll collect it from you at a gig (and give you the money, obviously)?

Argo's Pinbball Clemens == Love, my favorite 3apple high celebrity. For a football player he barely made it to his lineman's kneecaps.

My ex-housemate once demanded my help to choose a suitable engagement ring for his fiancee from some Argos catalogue. They had an special offer going on: something like two for one, involving engagement and wedding rings. The image of his flicking through the catalogue and pondering the question 'to buy or not to buy' one of the assorted horreurs in platinum deeply affected my ideas about romanticism. Definitely,my type of man is the one who would not choose a wedding ring from Argos, sorry.

I like Argos. I got my stereo there. I wonder if I can take it back, cause it's still under warantee. Or does that not cover having white russians poured into it by irate gay boys who wanted to hear Peaches?

Kate, my sister tried that (not white russians though, Vodka and Irn Bru) they can tell....

Who the fuck do you think you are, selling desks that dont fit together propeerly? Argos, you're a cowboy...you're a fucking wanker. I didn't rate you as an option, I don't rate you as an shop, and I don't rate you as a desk option. You're a fucking wanker and you can stick your desk up your arse. The only reason I have any dealings with you is that somehow you are the only shop that sells desks near my house. You can stick it up your bollocks

I'd waited long enough. I fucking hit it hard. The shelf was there (I think). Take that you cunt. And don't ever stand over me sneering about laptop on the floor

Even in the kitchen afterwards, I had no remorse. My attitude was, fuck it. What goes around comes around. It got his just rewards. It fucked me over and my attitude is an eye for an eye

Casio keyboards: back then - starting at £70, now - £5 at a car boot sale / £70 on eBay (circuit bending hipster dollar at work)

i remember looking at my nes games and seeing that some of them were £49.99, and we were fairly poor.

Surprised that you could still buy those sun ray wall clocks new in 1985. There's not a lot in this catalogue is there? Not surprisingly, the electronics section is very empty compared to today.

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Sunday, 12 December 2010 20:07 (thirteen years ago) link

The 1976 catalogue looks really utilitarian. It's amazing how much stuff we're surrounded by now. Also I remember the black cover of the 1986 catalogue - remember thinking back then that it was very swanky!

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Sunday, 12 December 2010 20:11 (thirteen years ago) link

1985/1986 is really when they went from 'crummy little catalogue store' to 'crummy big catalogue store', right?

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Sunday, 12 December 2010 20:18 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah just thinking that - there are loads more toys and toy brands in the 1986 one.

Not the real Village People, Sunday, 12 December 2010 20:24 (thirteen years ago) link

It's the year they started selling Yamaha keyboards alongside Casio, including the mighty SK-1 - only £99.00! wait WTF?!

Argos catalogue: Life lessons from the 'book of dreams'

That's how millennials and boomers have been lamenting the loss of the Argos catalogue. One Twitter user even wrote that it was his entire childhood.

^^^ I guess us Gen-Xers don't give a fu... oh that's right we don't.

Weird. I knew that Habitat had kind of merged into Argos but hadn't quite expected the Habitat website to suddenly basically be selling Argos stuff.
