I vaguely remember a "and finally" news item about this during all those poll tax shenanigans. Wasn't it that some cheeky fellow had set up his own religious order because members of religious orders were not required to pay taxes?

i think that's the case in the US at least.

what about the monks who make beer? (do they all make beer?)

geeta, Thursday, 23 January 2003 14:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nope some of them make Tonic Wine and ship it to Glasgow to fuel the Neds.

Belgian ones do! They are TRAPPISTS, but have they evaded the TRAP (ho ho DYS) of thee taxation laws? I do wonder!

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 14:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

In Ireland they're liable for tax but 'earn' such a pittance that in reality they contribute nothing (beyond their charitable good work in the community).

Contributions to the church/religious order aren't taxable but once they are paid as 'salary' to a priest/nun/monk income tax can be applied.

Fascinating, huh?

Who/what is the Quoon?

Belgian ones do!

yes, but they make Chimay Rouge et Bleu. So they are (Trap)pist.

Sarah, you need not do a self assessment form unless you are self employed or have significant "other" earnings (ie freelance mularky). Don't worry.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hor Majosty tho Quoon? (is that the 2 Ronnies?)

And thank you Ptee for the self-assessment advice. I was vaguely worried about that too.

the monky and the trap!

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

FUndamentally you only need to do a self assessment form if they've sent you one. I assume Sarah's tax is all PAYE.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

(self assessment suxx you are all PAYE)

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm PAYE, and the upshot of my self-assessment bollocks this year is that I owe the taxman £523. Fuck knows how that works.

SittingPretty (sittingpretty), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Eh? I thought you didn't do Self assessment if you PAYE'd?

smee (smee), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nope some of them make Tonic Wine and ship it to Glasgow to fuel the Neds.

Can't I ask for something of higher quality?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

I saw a monk today. He had a big beard and a lovely coat. Everyone around here has lovely coats. Yay Oxford.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ned - I'm afraid if you come to Glasgow you will have to drink Buckfast with the rest of the neds, sorry.

smee (smee), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

Maybe I can be their Pied Piper and lead them onto the joys of something else.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

Be my guest, lead them far far away while you're at it will ya?

smee (smee), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

Into the firth we go.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:51 (twenty-one years ago) link
