Jeez! Impulse in ML1 - many a lunch hour also spent in there when I was at High School. Pretty sure they had David Live for £22 around 1994 which was an extrordinary amount of money for 13 year old me to even consider paying then.

Cafe! Is this TCR, Bhumibol?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 26 June 2006 13:19 (seventeen years ago) link

The Hamilton representation on ILM is startling.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 26 June 2006 13:26 (seventeen years ago) link

It's academic.

Most recent Sub Pop releases now £6!

Ned Beauman (NedBeauman), Monday, 26 June 2006 14:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Old Grey Whistle Test Vol 1, 2DVD for a fiver! Nice. Especially when the single disc vols 2&3 are £20 each.
There is some terrible 70s rock nonsense on it, and a highly unwelcome dose of Simply Red, but it's largely very good indeed, with some extraordinary performances from New York Dolls ("mock rock" quips a condescending Bob Harris afterwards), Tim Buckley, SAHB, Emmylou Harris, Bill Withers, Robert Wyatt and PIL (You can't help but agree with Annie Nightingale that Careering is one of the great Whistle Test performances). The shambolic Damned clip is gold.

Stew (stew s), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 18:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Fiver? Righto, I'm there lunchtime.

Is this thing on?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 08:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, it wasn't a fiver in the Reading branch, anyway.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 12:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Nuggets ("new" one CD version of "old" 2LP version) going for £5 in Fopp.

Sold out in Fopp on Cambridge circus AND it's a tenner anyway. I've been 'ad.

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 12:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Saw it in reading, fiver, confirmed.

Old Grey Whistle Test Vol 1, 2DVD for a fiver!

Is this the one with Focus and Judee Sill on it?

¡Vamos a matar, Dadaismus! (Dada), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 13:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Edinburgh has the Nuggets CD for a £5 too. Bargain. Got the boxset though so didn't have the joy of buying it sadly.

ML1 is Motherwell *Boo Hiss etc*

I bought that box set from Tower in glasgow on import before it got a UK release. Paid about £45-50 i think. Was well worth it though.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 14:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Presume that was back in the day when Tower was really good. Used to have lots of import stuff. Worth reiterating that it's £5 for the single disc original Nuggets and not for the 4CD boxset which would indeed be the best bargain ever.

Oh and ML9 was the place to be (not)

mms (mms), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 14:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Went into the Glasgow Union St Fopp today to look for Nuggets but couldn't see it amongst the new releases. May be sold out...
However, I did chance across their £3 bargain racks and picked up Ivor Cutler's An Elpee and Two Epees and the Chess psych soul and funky grooves comp (Rotary Connection, Solomon Burke - nice). When I get paid on Friday I shall return for the Astrud Gilberto and Avro Part albums.
Think this was just a store clearout, but no harm looking elsewhere. Was separate to their standard £3 section with Outkast, Kylie etc. #

Dadaismus: The Whistle Test dvd has Focus, but not Judee Sill. Think she's on the second one. Happily, the clip is on youtube. Voila:

man that ivor cutler disc is TREMENDOUS value for money - all his early hits ('gruts', 'eggmeat') and the originals are well scarce

the loss of derek bailey and ivor cutler seems to DEEPEN over time - i think i finally understanding what 'irreplaceable' means

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 18:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes, I was very chuffed. Best ever bargain was in the Virgin 3.99 sale earlier in the year. In the Chester store I picked up the James Chance boxset for 3.99. That's worth like 35-40 quid normally!

Stew (stew s), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 18:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah it was ten years ago maybe?,i cant remember exactly when it came out Back when Tower had a fantastic funk and soul section. Picked up some great albums there on the recommendation of Andy who worked on the funk/soul floor. Bought all my funk vinyl from there and FOPP(who licensed it all) up in the west end. Tower more or less died when FOPP opened round the corner. Although it had went downhill before that when they cut back on specialist stuff, which for me was the lifeblood of the store as anything other shops had tended to be far cheaper than Tower.
Missing went downhill around then too.

Does anyone go up the barras now? I havent been up there since about 1998. Used to get some great bootlegs from the barras and there was always plenty of cheap cds/vinyl too.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 19:33 (seventeen years ago) link

i went to the barras on my first visit to glasgow abt a year or so ago - pretty dispiriting - lotsa shitty bootleg dvds of the latest big movies, overpriced junk, 1980s bob dylan bootlegs, not real bargains that i cld spot and im normally a gd spotter

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 19:40 (seventeen years ago) link

It used to be great. But I just don't feel the need to go there now just for bootlegs(live) as i can just download them now for free.
I've never bought pirate cds or dvds ever.

Did someone try to sell you ciggies or tobacco every 10 yards?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 19:44 (seventeen years ago) link

not that i recall but it was all a giddy blur

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 19:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Monsieur Le Fopp is hosting "Ron Sexsmith" this afternoon/evening, I think. The "Covent Garden" store. I shall be home by then though.

It was definitely a fiver, Nuggets. I haven't had nobody, me.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 30 June 2006 11:02 (seventeen years ago) link

i bought this shitty 'nuggets from nuggets' thing, like 20 out of the original 28. i was confused and stuff.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Friday, 30 June 2006 11:04 (seventeen years ago) link

"Nuggets from Nuggets" is 20 from the 4CD box, not the orig 28.

Also the Associates double pack for a fiver and Fairport's Angel Delight for £3. It's their first sans Thompo - not bad at all.

This revival prompted me to visit Fopp myself. The Shaftesbury Ave one, didn't bother checking if the TCR one is open yet.

Got these for a fiver each:

Boogie down productions - by all means necessary
Fischerspooner - #1
Gang of four - solid gold
Adam & the ants - dirk wears white sox

and the Sonic Youth debut EP reissue for £6! Woo.
