libero grande was a great idea, i remember t being god alright once you got your head around it. wish the PES2009 become a legend camera wasn't so shit, or it'd work

I pretty much love almost every football game I've owned since my Atari & Amiga days - Sensi, all the Kick Offs, Striker, every edition of ISS/Pro/Evo I've owned, many but not all of the FIFAs (though I can't remember the stinkers off the top of my head - 95 and 97 were shit, yes?), even a Net Yaroze Sensi clone I got for nothing with a magazine. Of the more recent games I'd probably go with PES 4 or PES 2008 or FIFA 10.

Worst ever was the Sensi (for PS2? The one that tried to bring an isometric view but retain Sensi mechanics) - took that back the day after I bought it & the guy in the shop just handed me my money back without question. Oh, and that top down Italia 90 game for the MEgadrive that made the horrible kicking a burst bladder noise.

Had completely forgotten about European Club Soccer which I also liked - must go find a video.

I think Be A Pro on FIFA has this just about right, though the manager's target thing gets ridic if you're a forward (e.g. score 5 goals, get a match rating of 10.0, solve world hunger).

Let's be serious, it's ISS 64.

you kno what

changing my vote to iss 64, the only football game of modern times where long ball was a valid option. i might dig that out tonight, i dont think scoring goals has ever been so satisfying

First goal from a through ball onto a diagonal run in ISS remains a moment of pure joy in my football gaming life.

95 and 97 were shit, yes?

Fifa 95 had the most insane best-way-of-scoring I've ever seen - level with the penalty spot, a yard or so from the sideline, face the corner flag, shoot.

i had fifa 95 and played it to death but it was the first game i can recall to take control of the players away from you, so i dont remember it fondly in light of the fact that all football games since have gone down that route.

played pro evo 2010 for a couple hours last night with brother, man it's shitty./ no control whatsoever over player runs, passing random as fuck.

I think posts to this thread should all include the broken best-way-to-score: European Club Soccer for instance had a sweetspot just past the halfway line, if you did "chip shot" from there with a midfielder, your striker could run forward and head it in for a certain goal.

It's kind of crazy that Fifa '95 was only 3 years before '98, that game changed everything.

I think European Club Soccer always gave you a guaranteed free header at the back post if you crossed from the by-line at the edge of the box.

Sensi often let you have straight punt from keeper - straight header on - forward gets straight shot into corner of goal, though it wasn't guaranteed.

original Fifa -if you shot straight at goalie from maybe 20 yards out half the time his 'i've only got one animation' collision detection would miss the ball- like almunia i guess.

also, you could stand in front of goalie from kickouts, and maybe half the time again it'd come off you and you'd get to scramble with him for a tap in

There was a PES game where you could anticipate (from the keeper's position) a short goal kick to the nearest defender and the keeper would still try to make the pass if you stood in the way, giving you a free one-on-one.

FIFA 10 occasionally does the same thing with free kicks.

Pele Soccer, which I mentioned earlier, besides being a totally (and deservedly so) unknown game basically just had 1 (!!!!) way to score. scoring in any other way was virtually impossible and definetely did NOT involve using the C-shoot button.
sort of hard to describe what the right way was to score, basically involved dribbling a certain route, coming towards at the goal at a certain angle.. :)

(in Pele soccer I never converted a single penalty kick!) did score directly from a corner though.....

have yet to score a penalty in PES2010 on PS3 when i've played it- it's a joke

I don't understand why so many games get penalties wrong - I can think of lots of minigame tasks in videogames that I manage 70-90% of the time - just do something like that!

A game I really enjoyed: New Star Soccer 3.

Sensible '98. I got it for the PC excited by the new look but yeah it sucked - pointless 3D. Jon Hare did a lot of it on his own tho - even the snippets of commentary. Mad.

Oh, and that top down Italia 90 game for the MEgadrive that made the horrible kicking a burst bladder noise

haha, I had a little shudder remembering this sound, which I probably haven't heard since I was about eight years old. I think this is my least favourite football game too, running with the ball in anything but a straight line being an arduous task is a bad start.

[in original FIFA] could stand in front of goalie from kickouts, and maybe half the time again it'd come off you and you'd get to scramble with him for a tap in

you were clearly not very good at it, that was a guaranteed overhead kick goal for me. I was so pleased when I somehow replicated this playing FIFA 06.

as far as I've been able to tell the easy FIFA 06 goal is wellying it at the keeper from outside the corner of the box. Two-thirds of the time he'll parry it across the goalmouth, straight into the path of another of your players. Not as fun as some of the others, I guess.

eleven years pass...

Ive been enjoying pes6 master league a lot on emulator

Key to learning to love again was remembering that players are hugely individual and need you to figure them out
