I would be much more amenable to shortening the ban had gr8080 posted under his actual name when he put up that Youtube video; it's not like he isn't known for doing creepy weird things off-board with other ILXors names anyway (I'm sure most of you are friends with him on Facebook; ever notice the URL he chose for his profile?). The fact that he did this under a sockpuppet account shows either a stunning lack of judgment or recognition that what he was doing could most charitably be described as "shady".

People have done things like making Red Meat or Xtranormal movies out of posts on regular, googlable ILX for years; it's not particularly nice but it's never been information that was intentionally hidden from general public consumption and, as such, hasn't been acted on by any of the site's moderators. If there are more instances of 77 information being spread around the Internet without poster consent, please let us know.

Also, the original conversation among the mods was "permaban or 60 days?"

The two constant governing principles of 77 have always been "what happens on 77 stays on 77," and "no using 77 as a private place to talk about non-77ers behind their back." Since the earliest days of that board, there have been little transgressions of these rules and it's never clear whether they're simple mistakes or somebody saying "fuck it, I'm doing this thing and if I get called on it, I get called on it and what are they going to do, ban me?" Re: the rights and wrongs of this, I think the mods have a responsibility to send the message that reposting people's own posts, 77 or otherwise, elsewhere for lolz is straight-up unacceptable. He knew it was dodgy, otherwise he wouldn't have registered a sock account for it. I've hung out with Grady and like him a lot but he should man up and take the ban IMO.

He's left ILX for like a year on end before and been perfectly happy without the boards in his life, I'm sure he'll be able to cope with a few week's absence.

No, the identity wasn't known until after the temp was changed to a perma. It was a case of one mod (me) temping the sock as an immediate measure, and other mods saying "nah, you know, this is totally permabannable. BTW, who is this sock?"

this is the assumption that I've been working on, i.e. it's pretty clear that anybody with an e-mail address can find their way to 77 with a post on the request thread. the big comfort is knowing that my posting pics of avatar porn is not going to find its way into google (hello future employers)

you know I cant help but think of harbl's post a few days before I made my way onto 77 that the big secret is that 77 just isn't very good. I had visions of homer in chocolateland but really it's like wandering into your uncle's damp and dark basement.

As much comedy gold as this thread allows, it's getting locked shortly, so:

1) To answer the thread question: No, grady is serving out the 60. markers is not responsible for this; it's a mod decision. I like grady but even i think the youtube thing was crepey. That said, it wasn't actively malevolent and that's certainly the core reason he didn't pull a permaban.
2) 77 is, for the foreseeable future, remaining a "secret" board, i.e. invite only (though the bar for an invite, at least for the moment, isn't much higher than knowing enough to ask to get in and willingness to play by the rules) and ungooglable.
3) Whenever you post anything on the web, it is no longer secret.
4) It is a major dick move to reference or republish material posted in a board that you asked to enter with the understanding that no one wants you to reference or republish material from that board, regardless of whether it's about your eating habits or your finances.

The requirements should be a minimum of 100 posts, at least five albums YSI'ed, a +1 ranking of over 50 and a username registration over three months old.

And that's just to see the pic's.

ps. Mod community is going to take a brief hiatus on accepting new 77 posters while we discus general guidelines that'll hopefully please the greatest number of people and best serve the borad.
